Trike | 11197 comments Solid ending. I assume they will do a second season.

I don’t think it’s a GoT killer, but to me it was more interesting than Carnival Row. Still not impressed by Cavill, though.

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 1803 comments I quite enjoyed it since I have zero expectation having neither read the books nor played the game.

The writing could be improved. Maybe I should do a drinking game whenever anyone say 'destiny'.

The casting was good. The FX was okay. The episodes were uneven, some felt reaaaaly long. I enjoyed episode 3 the most.

The finale (view spoiler)

Not Netflix's best fantasy show, but I am still invested in the show and looking forward to the next one.

He needs to do more than just growling gorgeously magnificently.

Phillip Murrell | 367 comments I enjoyed it. I haven't read the books, but I did play the last two games. I found myself looking up book information because Geralt of the show was slightly different than the game (e.g. he carries both swords in the games, but Roach carries the silver sword in books/show). I hope they have another season, but I definitely felt GoT pulled me in faster with one season than The Witcher.

message 55: by Melani (new)

Melani | 189 comments I liked it. Cavill was fine in the role (for ALL definitions of fine, please note). I was impressed with how the writers manged to tone down some of the more erm... 80s/90s fantasy elements from the one book I read. I'm looking forward to a second season and I might throw the show on again at some point.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 860 comments We've watched 5 episodes so far. Bambi & I are loving it!
I listened to the audiobook for The Last Wish a little over a year ago. I loved it & decided to wait for the show to read more (as is my habit when I can exercise patience).
I think the casting/performance of the characters that I remember is excellent & the adaptation to screen is pretty faithful.
The separate timelines caught me by surprise & I love being surprised.
I assume that later books are larger tales & the show may change a bit.

Molly (mollyrichmer) | 148 comments It took me a few episodes to get into it, but I'm enjoying it now. Haven't played the games or read the books, so just going in blind.

The one thing that's really bothering me is the obvious age difference between Yennefer and Geralt. The grey hair ages Cavill, while Anya Chalotra looks like she could be a sexy teen on a CW drama. I know they're both supposed to be magically youthful or whatever, but seeing them together still kind of squicks me out.

For those wondering, Cavill is 36 and Chalotra is 23.

I never felt that. I don't see Geralt as old. He is a very manly man.

By the time Yennefer meets Geralt she is portrayed as a very strong woman who does what she wants. The characters are both much older than normal humans. In the books Yennefer is about a decade older than Geralt. They are both around 100 years old.

If he'd got it on with Piglet it might have "squicked" me out ;-)

message 60: by Sean (new)

Sean | 367 comments I wasn't bothered by the relationship either. I think a lot of that has to do with the maturity and confidence Chalotra gives off in the role. She doesn't come off as being as young as she is - I certainly wouldn't have guessed she was that young based on her performance.

Thanks for the list. I'm enjoying the Netflix series but I'm imagining the books are probably better.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I watched the first episode last night, and rather enjoyed it. I'm not saying it was perfect - there were parts that I think were meant to seem brutal that looked rather silly and cartoonish to me - but it kept my attention and left me wanting more, which isn't a bad start. I must confess though, I did keep squinting my eyes (and my ears, if that's possible) to try and make Geralt look and sound more like the Geralt of the game. That's the trouble with watching a tv adaptation of something you love, especially when that something already has a visual element.

Tamahome | 7218 comments Episode 3 really got me into it. I'm on episode 7. I was confused by the different timelines. Check out this over-analysis of the big fight scene in the first episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfUPf...

message 66: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 1778 comments I’ve watched the first two episodes and I love the aesthetic of this show - the music in particular is really well done and the look of Aretusa was great. The wig is much less distracting than I thought it would be.
I don’t have a very strong idea of what’s going on, but I’m willing to keep watching and hope it all becomes clear in time. One thing I would really like is a map of the world incorporated into the show - I understand that they don’t want to be too like GoT but that opening credit sequence map was a really helpful aid to understanding what was happening in the world of GoT. The Witcher gives you no sense of how any of the locations shown relate to each other.

Thanks for sharing this link... although I feel like the show should make sense of its own geography without the viewers having to look at the wiki.
(Also the existence of radically different maps is adding to my confusion)

Yeah, having so many maps does add to the confusion. The Witcher has had more incarnations than other properties, and they all bring their own view of the story.

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 860 comments Update:
We finished watching the season last night. I love the series & The Last Wish so much that I have the Sword of Destiny audiobook on hold from Libby. I just bought the 1st 2 games (enhanced editions) on Steam for under $5 total & the 3rd for free with Game Pass for Xbox One. I'm going to keep an eye out for the soundtrack too.

Tamahome | 7218 comments Weird. Henry Cavil starts reading The Last Wish at chapter 3, then jumps to chapter 1. Then he skips a little on a page. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUST_...

message 77: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 1778 comments I have now picked up the audiobook of The Last Wish and I am enjoying it - it does help with some of the details of the stories in the show, although they're presented in a different order. Never mind! Maybe it will all make sense at the end ... and if it doesn't I'm sure they'll be an explainer online somewhere.

message 78: by Tamahome (last edited Jan 08, 2020 12:21PM) (new)

Tamahome | 7218 comments I wish I understood Polish. The Polish audiobooks are like Graphicaudio with full cast, music, and effects. There's some subbed clips on youtube. The first wish is much different in the book, lol.

Wikipedia tells you which episodes are based on which short stories from the first two books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wit...

message 79: by Jessica (last edited Jan 08, 2020 03:48PM) (new)

Jessica (j-boo) | 323 comments I enjoyed the first season. I have no complaints about Cavill's performance, since he pretty much emulates the flat affect and monotonous tone of the video game version of Geralt - although I guess I don't remember if I got that same vibe from the original book version of Geralt or not.

The show did a decent job of eliminating much of the rampant misogyny present in the books.

Interesting that they apparently couldn't stand to name the bard Dandelion?

The CGI was pretty sad (lookin' at you, gold dragon).

I fell in love with Yennefer of Vengerberg. I've only read The Last Wish (for S&L), so I was not familiar with her back story prior to watching the show. I admit, though, that I don't really get how she went from being a failure of a student to one of the most powerful mages. Something about embracing versus controlling your chaos, I guess?

Anyway, I liked the show, although I did think it was a crap way to end the season, but felt better once I learned that the second season was somehow already green lit and announced before the first season even aired. I plan on taking the other Witcher books out of the library now, and have finally gotten around to buying and playing the third game, which is loads of fun!

I had great interactive one for Game of Thrones until I upgraded my iPad and it now won't work.

Tamahome | 7218 comments Just read "Something More" from Sword of Destiny, and it was very good. It has a lot of time jumps, but the text makes it obvious. Although you can be lost in the audiobook. I'm actually doing both at the same time. The last 2 episodes of the tv show take things from it. That wasn't a dream, that really was his:

So good. I got emotional at the end of Sword of Destiny. However, I think that Ciri is much more likable on the Netflix show.

Joseph | 2433 comments Henry Cavill breaks down the fight scene from the end of the first episode. It's interesting stuff -- for one thing, apparently they do a lot of their fighting with half-length or otherwise incomplete swords & other weapons, with the missing sections added in post.
