Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments I've read in some weird places, some which have gotten a chuckle of disbelief out of my friends.

What's the weirdest place you've ever cracked open a book?

Care to illustrate with an example... :)

In my case I don't think I have a "weird place" story but more of "at an inappropriate time", and that would have to be in the middle of a party, on the Kindle app on my phone. I do this very often, including Christmas eve dinner.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments Actually last night gave me this idea but I wasn't sure if I wanted to share, but I will. I always have a book in my purse, its just there. So last night when I went out with friends (and gf). They abandoned me at one point to invade the restroom in a herd (like girls tend to do) while I waited at our table keeping our place. At that point I was a bit tipsy and getting bored so I whipped out a book in a strip club. Then I was made fun of when my friends came back and caught me. In my defense, the naked girl on stage at that point looked as bored as I felt.

Okay... I'm pretty sure no one in this thread is going to be able to top that one. I think we can safely say that you win.

I'm curious, what were you reading?

I wouldn't be so sure. And either way, I still want stories.

I was reading The Blade Itself.

Karina (karinargh) I can't even compete with that one - but I did read a good chunk of A Clash of Kings while trapped in an elevator that broke down with me in it. I was fortunately excellently prepared for three hours stuck in a small dark space with a kindle AND a flashlight in my bag.

Wow, strip club! The best I can do at this point is in the bathtub. So many paperbacks have been ruined that way. And in the age of ereaders, its a surefire way to risk electrocution!

Wow. The nerves would have been killing me and I wouldn't have been able to concentrate knowing I was trapped in an elevator!

Or get a waterproof case. I wonder if those actually work if you drop the reader in water or if they are just to protect in case one or two drops make it to the reader.

I remember reading comic books in the bathtub once, it didn't end well.

Always prepared! That's a Scout's motto. My friends always look at me weird when I stuff a book and my Kindle in my purse everywhere but goes to show you just never know when reading time will crop up.

message 11: by Marina (new)

Marina Finlayson | 62 comments It's not a weird place, but I've read a lot on boats as a kid. My mother always wanted me to admire the scenery, but scenery couldn't compete with reading!

I've been stuck in a lift too, but sadly without a book. Had to spend the time talking to my fiance, and since it was his fault the lift stopped (he jumped up and down), I wasn't very happy with him!

Boats seem like a great place to read, just don't drop the book into the ocean!

Ouch! I hope he learned his lesson. I hope his primary motivation was to test out the hypothesis about what happens when you jump in an elevator rather than pissing you off.

message 13: by Marina (new)

Marina Finlayson | 62 comments I think his primary motivation was to prove to me (since I had a bit of a lift phobia) that there was nothing to worry about. #reassurancefail

There also may have been alcohol involved. He's lucky I still married him!

Haha!! If you look at it that way, that was kinda sweet.

message 15: by Gary (new)

Gary | 1472 comments I knew I was going to be bored to tears otherwise, so I took a book to my college graduation ceremony and read through the speeches and whatnot. Afterwards, I ran into one of my professors and she saw the book in my hand, and asked why I had it. I explained.

"Man, I wish I could do that," she said.

Lara Amber (laraamber) | 25 comments Okay this will be TMI:

On the table while I was having my Mirena inserted.

Hey if I'm going to be in a paper gown, with my feet in stirrups waiting for the doctor, might as well have a book.

Ok, I know this isn't a contest, but to me you are the winner :)
And I thought no one was going to be able to top Alicja's story...

message 18: by Gary (new)

Gary | 1472 comments I had to look up "Mirena" so there's my "something new" I learned for today.

(I also learned that if you google "Mirena insert" there are youtube videos....)

message 19: by William (new)

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 73 comments Riding in a Blackhawk during a training run in Ft. Leonardwood. It wasn't even a good book. 'Be Cool.'

But it pales when compared to some of these great ones!

message 20: by Alicja, ἀπὸ μηχανῆς Θεός (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 772 comments Lara Amber, that's awesome! I agree, you win.

But Wialliam, yours is awesome too! Although I did read for fun a few times when hanging out in a tank simulator back when I used to work on military contracts.

William Galaini (williamgalaini) | 73 comments Alicja, what would be the best novel to read in a tank simulator? Hunt for Red October? I only know sub books, not tank books!

I read military space opera in there. And gay and lesbian romance as a bit of a fuck you to the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the day. But nothing tank related. I was in theory supposed to be working and not reading for fun.

Audiobooks or actual walking with a book on your hands?

I would think walking with an actual book could get painful! *ouch* I can just imagine walking into walls and other objects.

Ooh, will you teach us the trick?

I'm looking forward to cars of the future that will drive us. Listening to audiobooks in cars is okay but I would love to be able to just sit back and read while the car drives me. :P

I do that all the time. It helps that I'm using a Kindle and have good peripheral vision.

message 29: by Yoly (new)

Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments I can multitask almost anything but walking while reading is not part of that. I've tried going from by bedroom to the kitchen while reading my Kindle but my dog usually decides to "help".

We already have that, it's called "Honey, why don't you drive today?" :)
But I can't read in cars, I get nauseous :(

That works great unless your honey retorts, "Great, its a perfect day to take Loretta (aka the highly uncomfortable Kawasaki Ninja, at least uncomfortable for the passenger) out for a spin." *sigh* I haven't mastered reading on motorcycles either.

Simona That's difficult. I read everywhere! :)

Carolyn F. I was bored at a party my husband dragged me to. I "went to bathroom" and read while sitting on the side of the tub until someone tried the door knob. :)

message 35: by Louise (new)

Louise Tebbutt I used to read while walking from the bus stop to home, after school. It was a country lane and obviously very familiar. Walking slowly helped make it easier, and gave me extra reading time.

Reading a book was the last thing on my mind when having a Mirena fitted! You must have a high pain threshold.

Wow, that sounds dangerous!
I try reading walking inside the house and my dog usually tries to play a trick on me. He knows I'm not paying attention...
