Week 9 - Read a book set in the UK.

Book Cover/Link - Mary Hades (Mary Hades #1) by Sarah Dalton Mary Hades by Sarah Dalton

Rating - 4 Stars

This was a great ghost story. It had a bit of mystery and romance included. It was just a bit less spooky then I expected. I think this was due to it being a YA novel. I am used to reading adult ones that lean more towards horror. I thought the story was well written and enjoyed it though.

Overall, I had fun reading this and enjoyed the characters and storyline. The only thing I thought could have been changed was the ending. Maybe lengthening it would help. It was just a bit quick to happen. I am hoping this is due to this being part of a series. I'll know as soon as I start the next book.

Week 8: Option 2

Book: The Mystery of the Moving Image by C.S. Poe
Read: 11/7/18
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
Another enjoyable addition to this series. This one focused more on Sebastian and this time he starts out trying not to get sucked into this mystery but of course that doesn't work. He also had a big breakthrough about his relationship with Cal and I was glad for that. The mystery itself was really interesting. I learned all about the first motion picture machine called a Kinetoscope and thought I figured out whodunnit but kept second guessing myself until the end. Sorry to hear there's only going to be one more book in this series. I think the books keep getting better and they're really entertaining.

Set in the UK
Romancing the Ugly Duckling by Clare London
Rating 4.5 stars
Review: A cute story with an important message about the need for self-esteem and not letting the bullies determine your worth. Greg Ventura was bullied by his "perfect" brothers as a child and teen. He just hadn't grown into his kind of beauty/handsomeness. but even though he look great now he still sees his image as an awkward teen. Perry is a fashionista who get sent to transform Greg to be like his celebrity brothers. He soon realizes that doing that would be wrong because he looks great just the way he is.

I am not sure about this book. I liked it, didn't love it.
I guessed about David early on and if I am honest felt that there was a lot of padding in the book and it could have been shorter. The ending when it came seemed rushed to me and I don't think I really engaged with the characters.

-this was just okay. Julie's mom pissed me off with insisting Julie's father was actually a good father. A man who refuses to be involved in his children's lives except for an occasional visit every few years is not what I consider a good father. I sided with Julie on that one.

Bookcover/link: Leaning Into Touch by Lane Hayes
Read: 11/12/18
Rating: 5 stars
Review:
I’m really glad I finally read this. I’ve been putting it off because I didn’t really like Finn when he was a secondary character in the previous book so I thought I’d dislike him as a main character even more. I should have known though! Lane Hayes does a great job of showing the real Finn and why he can be such a jerk and why he and Josh should be together. Josh was delightful if a bit of a Peter Pan type character who never wants to grow up. He fully realizes this about himself though and part of his growth in and out of the romance is finally growing up. I was rooting for Josh and Finn’s HEA and even teared up a bit. There was a really interesting side story with Josh’s father which I’ve never come across in all the 100s of m/m romances I’ve read which was a nice change of pace.

Week #10 - read a book with a building on the cover

The Haunting of Angus Macgregor by L.J. Harris
Rating (1-5): ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review: Men in kilts, yummy!!!!!!!! I also loved the mix of the dialogues it just gave it more of an authentic feel. Poor Angus, he lost his Mom at an early age, then he losses his Dad & just before his Dad dies, he finds out he has an uncle. They grow to know each other through e-mail, etc. but never met in person. Unfortunately, before he is able to meet him, he also dies. He then finds out that is Uncle left him everything he own, including a haunted castle in Scotland. While getting settled in, he meets Daniel & sparks fly. I felt so bad for the ghost who turns out to be an ancestor of Daniel's. He was in love with the ancestor of Angus. Not only was a rooting for Angus & Daniel's HEA but for James & Alexander. This was a very good read.

Book Cover/Link - Screw Santa (Who Needs Christmas? #1) by Joyee Flynn Screw Santa by Joyee Flynn

Review:
This was a fun story to read. It had comedy and a bit of thriller to it. You have elves that don't like Santa and the North Pole. You just have to think of all kinds of things when reading that.

I thought Horse was a great character. I also loved Bren. I liked that Horse was dominant even though he was much smaller. I also liked having a big guy be more submissive. This book felt like it took the norms you usually read and threw them out the window. It was refreshing.

I have to say that my favorite part of the book was reading about how some of the elves got their names. I loved their stories. I can't wait to read more of the series.

A reread of a book I have enjoyed Marcus and Frankie are so different in appearance. but when it come to taking care of others they are remarkably similar. Frankie get Stranded in A snowstorm when his new GPS steers him wrong and instead of going south to the twin cities he goes west and North to backwoods Logan Minnesota where he first meets the people he will be snowbound with at the local diner. Love all the characters in this series and will see what I can do to read the rest during this season of preparing for Christmas.

We are all caught up and ready for Friday's last call of this round.
For this last call, its the first team to finish reading who wins.
I am usually in bed when the call comes through as I am +5 hours ahead of eastern but will try to have a book picked for the remaining categories close to 100 pages so it could give us a chance.
Remember that Option 2 will come from a different team this round, but Jane is kind and will usually give us another team which has a MM reader or 2 on, so you could look around if you think option 2 might be an option for you.

Hi Diane - if you are to win, I'd need a page number quote ~ either GR or Amazon or at least 35,000 words. But at this stage there are a few other teams that appear to be battling out first place :D (I haven't yet looked at their posts though to see what's going on in there! They could be just chatting!)

I had a great time reading this book. Sure, it had quite a bit of violence and definite dubious consent. It was fast and full of action though.

The thing I liked most about the book was Daniel. He was such a strong character. I loved that he didn't have a problem standing up to the wolves - even when he knew he was going to get hurt doing so.

I also loved how interesting the whole plot was. The fact that you have a virus that makes people become feral wolves or kills them makes for a good story. (view spoiler)

Overall, I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I get excited thinking about what is yet to come.
