When you're not reading a cozy....
Heidi *Listen. I'll just keep talking anyway. * wrote: "I am over half done with These Broken Stars
on audio and really like it so far. I am also listening to [book:The Golem and the Jinni|15819028..."I have THESE BROKEN STARS in The Pile. Hope to get to it one of these days!
Yesterday I finished reading Ice Shear which was a really good mystery but definitely not a cozy.
Today I'm starting California: A Novel which is a post-apocalyptic novel.
Yesterday I finished listening to young adult, gothic thriller Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd. Will be reading Without Consent, a legal crime novel by Frances Fyfield
I read Cover of Snow by Jenny Milchman. The mother-in-law character scared the bejeezus out of me. Great winter thriller.
I'm readingA Good Yarn
. I really enjoy series books. Getting to know the lives of the people is so comforting and they truly become part of my life for a period of time. But I have to say I haven't read a cozy in about 5 or 6 books now and I need to get back to them.
I just finished William Shakespeare's The Empire Striketh Back and enjoyed it as much as the first book, William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, a New Hope. The story itself is a lot of fun, but the illustrations make it even better :)
Kirsten wrote: "Yesterday I finished listening to young adult, gothic thriller Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd. Will be reading Without Consent, a legal crime n..."I am a fan of Frances Fyfield. I've read four of her books in the Helen West series including Without Consent. Enjoy!
I'm really enjoying reading California: A Novel. I haven't read that many post-apocalyptic books but I do enjoy that type of movie like I Am Legend and The World, The Flesh, The Devil, and the TV show Revolution, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
yesterday I gave up on The Lowenskold Ring Trilogy bySelma Lagerlof. it was a charming and well written old-fashioned book, but the complicated romantic issue in the second portion got to be too much - reminded me
of a soap opera, 19th century style.
The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry
I just finished this fiction about books and a bookstore.
It takes place on an island off the coast of Massachusetts and is the story of the bookseller/owner.
So far, it's the best book I've read this year.
Karen M wrote: "Kirsten wrote: "Yesterday I finished listening to young adult, gothic thriller Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd. Will be reading Without Consent,..."I love her too. Sad to see that Without Consent was her last Helen West.
Finished California: A Novel which was so good and have now moved onto The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing: A Novel which I am almost done reading This book is two generations in a family flashes back and forth between three time periods. Another really good book.
I just finished The House on Olive Street, by Robin Carr. Women's fiction and very good. I'll probably read more of her books.
I'm reading Wind Chime Point
the second of 3 in this series. It's not bad, although I'm not a romance reader, I have enjoyed this series. Until I received this on loan, I had never read anything bySherryl Woods. I will try some of her other books when I finish this series.
I enjoy a variety of books - even cookbooks. Like literary fiction, historical, legal thrillers, medical thrillers, romance, etc. etc. Have a book compulsion.
Katie wrote: "I enjoy a variety of books - even cookbooks. I get nervous if I leave home without one. I'd rather forget my cell than my book.
I just finished
by Polly Iyer. I don't give many 5 star reviews, but this book deserves it. It's romantic suspense that is so intense I actually had dreams about the story.
As I said in the review I posted, I had been hearing about suspense/thriller author Lee Child for years, but never got around to reading him until 2 weeks ago. Killing Floor is the first in the Jack Reacher series and I loved it. Intelligent plot, intriguing protagonist, and beautifully written. I'm going to read the second one.
Debra wrote: "As I said in the review I posted, I had been hearing about suspense/thriller author Lee Child for years, but never got around to reading him until 2 weeks ago. Where the protagonist rides off in the sunset at the end.
Kirsten wrote: "Debra wrote: "As I said in the review I posted, I had been hearing about suspense/thriller author Lee Child for years, but never got around to reading him until 2 weeks ago. [book:Killing Floor|781..."It works for me! A new setting with each book holds a lot of appeal :)
Debra wrote: "As I said in the review I posted, I had been hearing about suspense/thriller author Lee Child for years, but never got around to reading him until 2 weeks ago. Killing Floor is the fir..."I have a lot of friends on my M/T board who love Reacher. I've tried, but for some reason have never taken to the books. I read KILLING FLOOR some years ago and then 61 HOURS a couple of years ago for a challenge. I love Lee Child, but just not crazy about Reacher. I do love Robert Crais' Elvis Cole & Joe Pike books and Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight books, tho.
Miss Buncle's Book by D.E. Stevenson. Why am I just now learning of this book/author? The ebook sells for $2.51 on Amazon. The sequel is $2.99. Originally published in the 1930's!
Kathy wrote: "Miss Buncle's Book by D.E. Stevenson. Why am I just now learning of this book/author? The ebook sells for $2.51 on Amazon. The sequel is $2.99. Originally published..."I have this on my TBR...
I finished The Widow's Walk by Robert Barclay last night. Good story, but the author has a nasty "just then" habit that annoyed the heck out of me. It's so overused that I had picked up on it by page 50, and he used it five times in one chapter alone. Ugh! I can't believe any editor would let him get away with that. It's lazy writing, and almost every sentence in which it was employed would have been better -- stronger -- without it.
Picked up my reserved copy of
by Laura Hillenbrand at the library so there is some pressure to read it in a timely manner. The book is widely touted, and so far I am also finding it a fascinating and worthwhile true story to tell. fyi: Hillenbrand wrote Sea Biscuit.

I've heard that one is good. It was a group read for another GR group last July. Would have liked to join in, but I had too much going on and couldn't get my hands on the book. It's on my list of books to watch for.

I listened to Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption last year and liked it more than I thought I would -- learned a lot too! Daughter just read it a month or two ago and was surprised at how much she enjoyed the book too. I guess "enjoy" and "like" aren't really the right words, as it's hard to like some of the things included in the book. But it was well-written and informative. Neither of us regrets the time we spent reading/listening to the book, and that's always a good thing, right?
I'm just about done withMr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
. It has been very enjoyable, sort of a Harry Potter type book, but set in the US and very techy. I see there is another book out in the series, I may have to read it too.
The prequel isn't a full-length book, Debbie, it's only ~60ish pages, depending on which version you read (Kindle v. paperback, etc.) I haven't read it yet, but I want to, because I loved the original book :)
I'm reading Fallen Beauty,
.Interesting take on Edna St. Vincent Millay's life by adding a fictional character named Laura Kelley.
Heidi *Listen. I'll just keep talking anyway. * wrote: "I am listening to Cress

Cinder in The Pile and need to get to it. I picked it up because you liked it so much!
Melodie wrote: "Heidi *Listen. I'll just keep talking anyway. * wrote: "I am listening to Cress

I saw this one mentioned somewhere else recently, and it does sound good. Thanks for the recommendation!

Finished Death's Jest-Book last night. Starting Without Consent today.
