When you're not reading a cozy....
Melodie wrote: "LOVE King, but decided against UNDER THE DOME. Just too long!!"It's a commitment, that's for sure. Plus, it's a heavy book to have to handle. This is one novel that would be a definite advantage to read in e-form or audio.
Just started Scandal Sheet by Gemma Halliday, which has just been nominated for a RITA. Sort of a chic lit mystery.
I'm still working on How We Die: Reflections on Life's Final Chapter. I'm over half way through it. A little more technical than I expected it to be which is why I'm going a little slower than I normally read. I started People of the Book (what a great title for book lovers isn't it). I'm only 30 pages into it but it is good so far. The story revolves around a mysterious, beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in 15th century Spain and recently saved from destruction during the shelling of Sarajevo's libraries.

"One of my VERY favorite series. Can't wait for
on 4/27!
Currently reading Mad, Bad and Blonde by Cathie Linz. Pretty good so far. Have a couple of cozies waiting when I am done.
I just finished The First Rule by Robert Crais. It was the first book by him that I just didn't care for and ended up skimming most of it.
Susie in KS wrote: "I just finished The First Rule by Robert Crais. It was the first book by him that I just didn't care for and ended up skimming most of it."I really liked that one, Susie. I got to read an ARC late last year and it made my top reads for 2009. But then it's good we don't all like the same books or a lot of authors wouldn't sell any books!
I just finished People of the Book: Library Edition and was all ready to start on our Monthly Theme read but had to go pick up my reserve books that were in at the library. So we go and pick up the books and The Lovely Bones is only a 14 day loan with no renewals. So I am reading The Lovely Bones. (I'm on Chapter 2). Thus far is pretty good, sucks you in from the first paragraph. Has anyone else read it?
Heidi wrote: "Denise -I just listened to Lovely Bones on audio and liked it."Is the little girl (Susie) the narrator?
Yes Denise, but I got the audiobook read by the author. I guess there is another audiobook of Lovely Bones read by an actress that everyone on my audiobook group loved. I did not like the author as a narrator as she did not sound even close to being a teenager, but I still liked the story.

, which was excellent -- even though it is way far away from my normal books.Heidi, I just saw a Book TV interview with the author of that book (she was at the Virginia Festival of the Book). She made it sound really interesting, from both the scientific point of view and the personal. I'll have to look for it.
Melodie wrote: ...it's good we don't all like the same books or a lot of authors wouldn't sell any books! It certainly is good! All of us authors would either starve or be stuck with writing the same kind of book instead of the one that's bubbling inside us. I don't know which would be worse! :-)
I hope you like it Mary Ellen - I really did and was quite surprised because science is not my thing normally.
I will read most anything written by Robert Goddard. Each book is different and he rarely repeats a protagonist from one book to the next. I particularly enjoyed Past Caring, Caught in the Light and In Pale Battalions. Currently reading 31 Bond Street, historical fiction based upon an actual murder case in New York circa 1857.
I am starting
on audiobook. I am excited as the woman who read the part of Skeeter from The Help and also read Shiver is the narrator. She is excellent.
I enjoyed Oryx & Crake so much that I wanted to continue in their universe. That happens a lot with me. :-)
The Lovely Bones was a good book. It's not up there with People of the Book but it was a pretty good read. It is a very good reminder that you don't really know who lives next door. So after I finished The Lovely Bones I got to start on my April Theme Read. More about that in another thread.
I've just started Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb. I love and own (keep) this entire series! This is the first time I haven't re-read the entire series before the new release but my TBR pile is just too big.
I just finished two of Sarah Addison Allen's books- The Sugar QueenThe Girl Who Chased the Moon both very enjoyable and now I just started reading The Life O'Reilly. The Life O'Reilly
Kaye: I just picked up Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen at a library book sale -- glad to hear her books are good!
I'm reading The Professional by Robert B. Parker. It started out pretty good, but it's slowing down to the point where I just want to finish it.
It's not your traditional mystery, and not cozy, but I just finished the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. It's got romance, supernatural creatures, but it's shelved with mystery books as there is always something going on in each book to be solved. Very good series!!
Susie in KS wrote: "I'm reading The Professional by Robert B. Parker. I'm going to be so sad when all the ones RBP had in the pipeline before he died are all exhausted.

I am really enjoying
I love this series but this one in particular really has my laughing. The lines in this one are just too funny. Plus the action is very intense.

I might check his out, tho. I've had the chance to spend a bit of time around him at a couple of B'cons and he's just a riot.
Melodie wrote: "I always love my yearly visit with Spenser. I'm going to be so sad when all the ones RBP had in the pipeline before he died are all exhausted."Me too Melodie!...and I'm quickly catching up ;(
I just read Cherries in Winter: My Family's Recipe for Hope in Hard Times. It was a quick little read about how Suzan Colon and her family have coped over the years when money is short. Has a few good recipes included.

Am currently reading Too Many Murders by Colleen McCullough. This is a real departure from her Thorn Birds book and the Rome series.
I read the whole range of mysteries, from cozy to hard-boiled, also thrillers (Lee Child, Jeffery Deaver, Linwood Barclay, Dean Koontz, etc.), YA (Diane Duane, Tamora Pierce), children's (Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, Brandon Mull's Fablehaven, Diana Wynne Jones, Eva Ibbotson), and fantasy (Mercedes Lackey, Charles de Lint). And I enjoy rereading the Harry Potter books.
I am sick of seeing Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling on my currently reading shelf so I am working on finishing it. Also I picked a couple more off my TBR library stack that are non-mysteries to read. I need to sit down and peruse them before I decide which to read first. They are: City of Joy and A Dirty Job. City of Joy I came across while I was reading Patrick Swayze's biography. He made a movie based on the book and from what he said I decided to read the book. The book is about a district in Calcutta India no larger than three football fields where 70,000 people live in abject poverty, their cramped hovels invaded by pestilence and filth. Mere survival is an everyday miracle.

Have you read [book:Hide In Plain Sight? She writes Amish mysteries/ romance type. An excellent read if you haven't. If you have a kindle I believe it's still free.
Denise wrote: "I am sick of seeing Book Yourself Solid: The Fastest, Easiest, and Most Reliable System for Getting More Clients Than You Can Handle Even if You Hate Marketing and Selling on my curre..."Oh, A DIRTY JOB is a hoot!! But then I'm partial to Christopher Moore!
Heidi wrote: "I just started
- anyone read this series???"Heidi, this is a great book! I've read the first 4 or 5 in this series and then for some reason I got bored with it. I keep meaning to go back to it and read the rest, but the first book is wonderful.
I've read every book in the Russell-Holmes series (including the ARC of the latest one), and loved them all. Never got bored with them; they're among my favorite rereads.
