I finished
and loved it. Steve Hamilton is a really good writer and his Alex McKnight books are always great reads! Definitely NOT cozy!

I picked out two books at random to read on my Kindle and they both are about abuse by fathers. One the books centers on the physical and emotional abuse of the mother and the oldest daughter, The Boots My Mother Gave Me, but it also shows the strength of the both daughters. I would recommend this book and I haven't even finished it yet. The other book there has been reference to the father's physical and sexual abuse of the daughter but not in any detail, False Pretenses. This one has a mystery going on but I'm not far enough into it yet to form an opinion but I do intend to finish it so it is good.
Finished
Grave Dance last night and it was great. It's Urban Fantasy without vamps and werewolves, but with grim reapers and fae. Second in the series and I can't wait to read the third.
I read historical and paranormal/sci fi romance, some straight scifi/fantasy, and cozies or historical mysteries. Bascially I read in the same genres that I write except for the historical settings. And lately I've been getting into some YA books.

I have to assume that there will be a fourth - the third book is written with a fourth in mind.

Just finished The Novel by James Michener. Loved this novel; Michener draws such wonderful characters. This novel is also a novel about novels and the publishing industry told from four different points of view. Now, trying to finish Infinite Jest by DF Wallace.
I'm currently reading I Still Dream About You by Fannie Flagg. It's not really what I thought it would be. In fact, I'm about a third through it and the main character just seems pathetic. I did have a little break though and am hoping that once I dig back into it, it will pick up a bit.
Finished a couple of books over the last two weeks and these are my favourites:
I had expected to like the first two, but the latter two Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences novels really surprised me! Considering all the fuss made over them, I had frankly expected them to disappoint me, but they exceeded all expectations. It's always a pleasant surprise when that happens. :P
The Hunchback Assignments books were also good (if very quick, not particularly involved reads). I wasn't a fan of The Seduction of Phaeton Black, though, and The Eyre Affair left me underwhelmed.
And I just started
last night, after it's been on my to-read list since 2009! It's entertaining so far.

Love Alexia and Lord Macon!

I finally picked up Soulless not that long ago and I've already read the second as well. Really enjoy the characters and story.
I finished Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake last night (I stayed up to do it and I'm so tired right now). It was for a group on GR so while it's not what I normally read, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought it was pretty well written once I got into it and I really enjoyed it.Next up is The Mephisto Club
. I really enjoy these books by Tess Gerritsen and I can't wait to get into this one. It'll be a nice quick read.
Am currently about halfway through Disney after Dark (Kingdom Keepers #1) by Ridley Pearson, a YA thriller and a pretty fast read.

which was just okay, but finished a series (thank, God!). Just started
."I know what you mean about series, Melodie. I'm trying to finish up a couple series before I start more. Not that it's working. All my groups have been picking series start books lately and some of them are high up on my tbr list so how can I say no???
Ok. I just can't say no. That's probably the problem.
Heather L wrote: "Am currently about halfway through Disney after Dark (Kingdom Keepers #1) by Ridley Pearson, a YA thriller and a pretty fast read."I didn't think much of the first book but found myself thinking of it often. So I'm reading the series and enjoying them very much. I like the behind the scenes stuff at Disneyland.
Karen M: I have heard of The Frog Prince, but never read it. Glad you are enjoying it!
Vicky: I started the second book last night. I am enjoying them but admit, it might be easier to understand how the park is laid out if I had actually ever been there. I might have to print myself a map for easy reference. ;-)

Finished
the other day and it was lovely. Classic Patricia C. Wrede; a really charming and lively magical adventure. It reminds me of all the things I loved about YA fantasy novels before the recent trend towards dystopian and "gritty" everything.Erin wrote: "I finally picked up Soulless not that long ago and I've already read the second as well. I finished Soulless and enjoyed it! From what I've heard of the second book, though, I think it might be a good idea for me to wait until I have time to read both Changeless and Blameless before I embark on the road to a cliffhanger.

"Hannah - I recommend doing this. I got to the end of Changeless and was *very* glad I had Blameless to jump right into (although Blameless was probably my least favorite in the series [still good though]).
I'm reading two books that couldn't be more different.Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is just one of those really good novels and the other is a slightly wacky, mystery/thriller/paranormal The Witch's Ladder.
Although mysteries are my favorite genre, I enjoy all kinds of fiction... Recently I've been on an adventure story kick, reading The Scarlet Pimpernel series. Also just finished Harlen Coben's Caught and Angela Thirkell's The Northbridge Rectory.

Finished these two a few days ago. The latter was a mess of epic proportions and honestly tedious to get through, but The Emperor's Edge was awesome; I do love a well-written adventure/fantasy novel with great characters! The author's very prolific, too, so it'll keep me happily occupied for a while.
Moved onto
last night, which promises to be very interesting. A disease which causes gender-changes!
When not reading cozies, I devour the Sisterhood series by Fern Michaels. If you route for the lil guy/girl to get her revenge big time, this is a series you need to look into!
Believe it or not, I'm reading Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver's Travels My version is the children's story, not the adult political satire it was originally.

I recently tried that but it did not work as expected. I chose two books very different from one another hoping that if the one got too "stressful/intense" that I could pick up the light hearted, humorous one. I just cannot seem to make that switch in mid-book. And I wish I could because the book I read (NOT A COZY) was so very brutal at times that it was a difficult read for me. I just am not into that kind of brutal, beastly acts as entertainment. Many would not be bothered by that. If you are one of them, and like a very good adventure story, you may like "Rembrandts Ghost"
by: Paul Christopher. If he had left the brutality out, I would have loved this as an adventure story with some mystery added.
Well, that sucks - Rembrandts Ghost sounds good from the synopsis. But I don't much like brutal or beastly acts as entertainment either. A shame, cuz it really sounds like something I'd love otherwise....

A treasure hunt, sea adventures, and great banter between two main characters ruined (For me,)Rembrandts ghost brought to mind a story that I loved called,The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde.
Nothing at all like it. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a small box on the back of the books that have ratings for violence and sex like our movies. I would rate this one R . Very descriptive violence.
❂ Jennifer wrote: "Oh! I LOVED the Canterville Ghost!! :D"One of my all-time favorites. The movie was great too. But trust me on this. Rembrandts Ghost is as different as night and day.
alicia wrote: "Finally readingDead to the World"Oh, my absolute FAVORITE Sookie book!! Hope you love it as much as I do!
❂ Jennifer wrote: "Oh! I LOVED the Canterville Ghost!! :D"I really enjoyed the movies (the one with Margaret Rutherford and Charles Laughton is best but some of the remakes are OK) so earlier this year I decided to read this --- SO GOOD!! I like Oscar Wilde's writing in general esp. his plays.
Just completed The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I listened to it on audio books. The historical references and rich prose lulled me into a foreign world where all kinds of strange things happened.

The remake was ok, but the original, I loved it. I read the book many many years ago.ok..you talked me into it. :) I think it's time to find a copy and do a re-read. A GREAT classic.
The Canterville Ghost is one I've been wanting to read -- hoping to work it in this year. I have the movie recorded off TCM, from back when I still had cable, but have held off watching it until I read the book.
I am just starting The Restorer by Amanda Stevens, a paranormal rom-suspense and the first in her "Graveyard Queen" series.

I would love to get the TCM version of that movie. That (IMO) is the best one. I hope you get a chance to work that one in.
