When you're not reading a cozy....

Loved both Hex Hall and Demon Glass.
Started Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last night, already about 10% of the way, can't wait to really dive into it tonight.
Jerusalem Maiden: A Novel by Talia Carner
Only about 100 pages (1/4) of the way through the book, but so far one of the best historical fiction books I've read published this year.
Finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and started To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf (group read for TNBBC).
I just finished Murder Most Royal
and not a moment too soon. I'd set myself to finish reading all of my unread Jean Plaidy this year but I am SO SICK of the Tudors I could hardly get through this one. I just wanted them to line up Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard and lop their heads off on page 2 and be done with it.

I know exactly how felt, and what you meant. And sometimes, don't you just want to march up to Henry VIII and say, "Now see here, you disgusting old egomaniac..."
I have been having a hard time getting into a book. First I tried S.J. Parris's
; this was my second swing at it. The first time I felt I was distracted by too much going on and couldn't get myself to concentrate. This time, I think I'm ready to admit I just find it boring. The author goes into far too much detail, and uses a hundred words when ten would do the job just fine.So I decided I'd read
. This is the fourth book in this series, and I've enjoyed all the previous ones. I guess I just didn't expect a vampire to play such a prominent role (at least in the beginning of the book, since I didn't get to the end...) or realize how off-putting I find the subject and behavior of vampires. This one will also be a DNF.Wish me luck finding something to get into before I lose my ever-lovin' mind...
Last night I started a FirstReads Game of Secrets: A Novel which does have a mystery. We'll see how it goes.

I've read 3 YA dystopian novels fairly close together and think I'll wait awhile before reading another! However, 2 of them were really excellent reads. I highly recommend
and
. Both were hard for me to put down!
not so much!
Also finished a really good thriller yesterday,
by Steve Berry. Hadn't read a Cotton Malone adventure in some time and this one was a real page-turner once I got all the players straight!
I just finished
and loved it! Now reading
the description of which appeals to me but which has started much different than I expected. We shall see how it goes.
Am working my way through To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, one of this month's group reads for The Next Best Book Club here on GR. Slow going so far, mostly because I've been so busy this week, but hope to devote most of Sunday to it.

I'm reading The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood which I've had for a long time. I loved Out of Africa both the book and the movie. This one already reminds of Karen Blixen book.
I have
and
checked out from the library right now. I don't feel like reading 800 pages so I think Game of Thrones is going back unread. I've been looking forward to White Night for awhile.

I'm really loving the Dresden files. I've actually got
checked out and White Night is waiting for me to pick it up - probably tonight after the gym. I got ahead of myself there. LOL

I hated it and if a friend hadn't insisted I give the series another go I would never have read another in the series and missed a lot of good stuff. When STORM FRONT was finally released as an audio I listened to it and actually liked it then. James Marsters can make anything good, and if you can get the Dresden Files books on audio...do it! He's a fantastic reader. There was some kind of scheduling conflict and he's not the reader for GHOST STORY. John Glover, Lionel Luthor from Smallville, reads it and while he might be okay, he's no Marsters!
I've read the first couple in the series and really enjoyed them, looking forward to reading more. I really liked the television series and wish it hadn't been cut so quickly.
I didn't like The Dresden Files TV show. Everything was just all wrong for me, though the guy who played Harry was okay. My husband liked the show, but he had never read the books. Most of the people I know who liked the show had never read the books prior to watching it. People who had read many of the books were disappointed with the show.

Whew! Finally finished To the Lighthouse. Now on to something a bit more fun, Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost.
I'm listening to
at work today. It's about all that's getting me through horribly dull, repetitive, brainless work.

I know! The narrator is perfect.
I just finished An Axe to Grind by F.M. (Marilyn) Meredith. It was a terrific book. Lots of action, although a grisly crime. But she didn't belabor the actual crime.
I'm very curious about
-I entered to win it & didn't & I'm really curious about it. I like Cathleen Schine as a writer.Donna, I'll be interested in what you think of it.

It started out interesting enough, and I could see the similarities to Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, but now that I'm about halfway though, I'm loosing interest. I guess I've read too many cozies; I keep waiting for "something" (like a murder) to happen.
Finished Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost -- another great addition to this series.
Received Summer in the South: A Novel by Cathy Holton in today's mail, so will probably read that next.

Trying to get interested in
. The first book in this series was the best so far. Didn't like #2 nearly as much, and this one is just not grabbing me yet.
I just finished a Carl Hiaasen book, Lucky You
. I gave it four stars. I love his sense of humor, and he writes about Florida low-lifes and eccentrics so well.
