Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I finished The Bang-Bang Club Snapshots from a Hidden War by Greg Marinovich which was not an easy read at all so it took awhile.

I've moved on to something MUCH lighter. Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2) by Rachel Hawkins It's a YA book, second in the series and I think I like it better than I did Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins

Wow. Two dystopian novels back to back.

Started Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last night, already about 10% of the way, can't wait to really dive into it tonight.

Jerusalem Maiden A Novel by Talia Carner

Only about 100 pages (1/4) of the way through the book, but so far one of the best historical fiction books I've read published this year.

Finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and started To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf (group read for TNBBC).

message 1658: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Finished Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and Moloka'i by Alan Brennert and am now reading The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber as well as trying to finish The Master And Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov . And The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Finished Nobody Lives Forever- definitely NOT a cozy! Good though.

message 1660: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I just finished Murder Most Royal Murder Most Royal (Tudor Saga, #5) by Jean Plaidy and not a moment too soon. I'd set myself to finish reading all of my unread Jean Plaidy this year but I am SO SICK of the Tudors I could hardly get through this one. I just wanted them to line up Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard and lop their heads off on page 2 and be done with it.

Jennifer, you made me laugh right out loud. I know exactly how felt, and what you meant. And sometimes, don't you just want to march up to Henry VIII and say, "Now see here, you disgusting old egomaniac..."

message 1662: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 137 comments I have been having a hard time getting into a book. First I tried S.J. Parris's Heresy (Giordano Bruno, #1) by S.J. Parris ; this was my second swing at it. The first time I felt I was distracted by too much going on and couldn't get myself to concentrate. This time, I think I'm ready to admit I just find it boring. The author goes into far too much detail, and uses a hundred words when ten would do the job just fine.

So I decided I'd read Oscar Wilde and the Vampire Murders A Mystery by Gyles Brandreth . This is the fourth book in this series, and I've enjoyed all the previous ones. I guess I just didn't expect a vampire to play such a prominent role (at least in the beginning of the book, since I didn't get to the end...) or realize how off-putting I find the subject and behavior of vampires. This one will also be a DNF.

Wish me luck finding something to get into before I lose my ever-lovin' mind...

I was totally unhip to these Oscar Wilde mysteries and think I might need to take a look at this one!

Yeah, Henry was a complete brown puckered nondescript of the first water, but I have a hard time feeling too sorry for the people around him sometimes-- what kind of moron who has a nice and distant country estate CHOOSES to live around that guy???

message 1666: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I've read 3 YA dystopian novels fairly close together and think I'll wait awhile before reading another! However, 2 of them were really excellent reads. I highly recommend Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano and Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver . Both were hard for me to put down! Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie not so much!

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Also finished a really good thriller yesterday, The Jefferson Key (Cotton Malone, #7) by Steve Berry by Steve Berry. Hadn't read a Cotton Malone adventure in some time and this one was a real page-turner once I got all the players straight!

Am working my way through To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf, one of this month's group reads for The Next Best Book Club here on GR. Slow going so far, mostly because I've been so busy this week, but hope to devote most of Sunday to it.

I just finished his The Emperor's Tomb and definitely will read more of his. He keeps it moving very quickly and he feeds you information without burying you.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I have A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1) by George R.R. I've only read the first one, Storm Front and can't wait to find the time to read the second one, Fool Moon. I loved the Dresden Files series on SyFy and I hope they bring it back!

You're one of the few people I know who actually liked STORM FRONT. I hated it and if a friend hadn't insisted I give the series another go I would never have read another in the series and missed a lot of good stuff. When STORM FRONT was finally released as an audio I listened to it and actually liked it then. James Marsters can make anything good, and if you can get the Dresden Files books on audio...do it! He's a fantastic reader. There was some kind of scheduling conflict and he's not the reader for GHOST STORY. John Glover, Lionel Luthor from Smallville, reads it and while he might be okay, he's no Marsters!

message 1678: by Erin L (new)

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments The library has them all on audio. Maybe I'll have to give them a try.

message 1679: by Caitlyn (new)

Caitlyn (quietcait) | 98 comments I've read the first couple in the series and really enjoyed them, looking forward to reading more. I really liked the television series and wish it hadn't been cut so quickly.

message 1680: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I didn't like The Dresden Files TV show. Everything was just all wrong for me, though the guy who played Harry was okay. My husband liked the show, but he had never read the books. Most of the people I know who liked the show had never read the books prior to watching it. People who had read many of the books were disappointed with the show.

The show was different on certain points from the first book I read. The vampire on the show was sexy and seemed to have a past with Dresden, not like the book at all.

It started out interesting enough, and I could see the similarities to Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, but now that I'm about halfway though, I'm loosing interest. I guess I've read too many cozies; I keep waiting for "something" (like a murder) to happen.

Finished Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost -- another great addition to this series.

Received Summer in the South: A Novel by Cathy Holton in today's mail, so will probably read that next.
