Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Just started an arc of won at LT. It's good so far and I loved her last book, The Brutal Telling - same location and inspector Gamache of the Surete du Quebec. Bury Your Dead (Armand Gamache, #6) by Louise Penny

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I've been reading a lot of non mysteries lately. Read and enjoyed Urban Shaman (Walker Papers, #1) by C.E. Murphy . Now I'm reading Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez which is as funny as promised. I love Duke and Earl.

Next up is Tithe (The Modern Faerie Tales, #1) by Holly Black , which I'm a bit worried about, it hasn't gotten great reviews and Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins . I've also got Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher waiting since a bunch of my library holds came in all at once. Ooops.

GIL'S ALL FRIGHT DINER is a hoot!! Looks like you're just getting started with the Dresden Files since FOOL MOON is only #2. This is one of my very favorite series. Butcher has NEVER disappointed me (well, I didn't care for STORM FRONT too much, but once I was able to get it on audio it was even good!). Not even with the various Dresden short stories that are out there. They're ALWAYS first rate.

I am going to have to try Gil's All Fright Diner with all the good reviews I have been seeing here. Sounds wild!

Suzanne | 188 comments Wow, recently finished Still Missing by Chevy Stevens. If you like thrillers, check this out. I finished in one day. Warning though, some very graphic rape scenes.

Finished The Pindar Diamond by Katie Hickman only about a half hour ago. I couldn't stop reading until I had reached the end. It was a good story, despite the sometimes slow pacing, particularly during the first half of the book, but it did pick up once the three different threads started to come together, and I even had to pause a few times near the end because I was all choked up and sniffly with emotion. Can't help but admire an author who can elicit that sort of response. It's not as easy to write as some might think.

This book was, apparently, the sequal to The Aviary Gate: A Novel, which I had never heard of before winning this book from GoodReads. The novel stands on its own quite well; not once did I feel I had missed something by not having read the first book. Still, were I to stumble upon it somewhere, I might pick up the first book all the same.

message 859: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments I loved Gil's All Fright Diner. I wish he had written another book that good, but that's pretty much his best. The ghost, so sweet.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Kari wrote: "I am reading A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffett because my sister would like it back.

Tales from Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett is still one of my all time favorite collections of short stories. It's my go to book on those rare occasions I get homesick. :)

message 861: by Kaye (new)

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Last night I finished Bury Your Dead (Armand Gamache, #6) by Louise Penny and it was a great book. If you have any interest in this series, read The Brutal Tellingfirst as this is a huge part of the story in Bury Your Dead which contains spoilers for The Brutal Telling. Sometimes you can read books out of order and they are stand alones but this time it really matters.

message 862: by Ann (new)

Ann (bookwoman247) | 18 comments I just found a copy of The Orientalist Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life by Tom Reiss at a local Friends of the Library booksale. It's about Jewish man who lived as a Muslim prince, even publishing a book in Nazi Germany. He escaped both the Russian pogroms and the Holocaust, and lived an extremely adventurous and unusual life, traveling around the world.

I couldn't resist starting this book at once! I'm very much into travel/adventure books and this sounds really interesting. I've barely started and already I'm learning bits of history and geography that are unfamiliar to me.

message 863: by Donna (new)

Donna | 27 comments I've been reading Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series. I read Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness, Traitor's Moon, and Shadows Return. I loved them all. Next up is The White Road.

Shay | 408 comments Sabrina, have you read the previous books in Lisa Shearin's series? I read The Trouble with Demons and didn't really care for it, but I didn't read the first two books either. But, I didn't like it in the good sense- it wasn't badly written or dull, it was either I wasn't in the mood for it or not my taste. So, not inherently bad.

Shay | 408 comments Reading Hardcourt Confidential Tales from Twenty Years in the Pro Tennis Trenches by Patrick McEnroe by Patrick McEnroe. Behind the scenes of the tennis world during the time of Patrick McEnroe's tenure as a player/commentator. So, roughly the era of his brother to the present. I'm positive you have to like tennis to even want to read this book.

Finished The Search by Nora Roberts before dinner this evening. Whew! Good book, but at nearly 500 pages I think it could have easily been a hundred less. My elbow hurts from holding it up the last couple days.

About Kate Daniels, I've read the four books and I like the last the less, I don't know not a great feeling. Now, I'm reading Born to Bite (Argeneau Vampires, #13) by Lynsay Sands , I'm at the beginning, so I don't know yet.

Lol, I didn't think Roberts wrote 500 page books - seems she just writes trilogies to sell more books. Glad you enjoyed it, Heather.

Will let you know if I am offered an ARC of Fall of Giants (or if I break down and buy it). At the moment I am reading an ARC of REVOLUTION by Jennifer Donnelly and am thoroughly enjoying it.

message 892: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Fall of Giants is set to be released on Sept 28. I'm still reading Pillars and want to real World first. So, I'm content waiting to get my library copy. So, hopefully somebody will read it and let us know how it is. The ebook was almost $20, so far, so I probably won't buy it.

message 893: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Spider Bones (Temperance Brennan, #13) by Kathy Reichs . Definitely not a cozy but an excellent read. I always enjoy Kathy Reichs but have to space the more "intense" crime/mystery books with cozies for my enjoyment. I can get really wrapped up in these things and then need a change of pace.

Excellent mystery so far!

message 895: by Denise (new)

Denise | 618 comments Talking about long books, I'm reading Hanta Yo: An American Saga by Ruth Beebe Hill, it is over 800 pages. I'm only 352 pages into it and it seems like I have been reading it forever. It is good but long. I'm also reading Power Animal Meditations: Shamanic Journeys with Your Spirit Allies and for a little lighter reading Her Best Friend by Sarah Mayberry. Just received it yesterday through the Harlequin Ambassador program and am over half way through. Good story, I am enjoying it but wish the two main characters would get their act together.

message 896: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Denise, I'm adding Hanta Yo to my TBR list. Looks great. I have a rule about adding books from GR. If I see it mentioned three times and I get more and more intrigued by the book, I add it to the list. I had to invent a rule because I'm so far behind on my reading I can't just add books automatically.
