Peter | -28 comments Alright - update. I'm at 4.5 audio hours right now, and will be over 5 by the end of the night, so I think that's the max I can contribute to audio hours.

I'm also sitting at about 48 pages but hoping double that by the end of the night. I'm able to read at work sometimes, but it's sporadic so often slow going.

I also decided to read a poem that was covered in a course I took recently that I really enjoyed. It's called "Man Carrying Thing" by Wallace Stevens.

"The poem must resist the intelligence
Almost successfully. Illustration:

A brune figure in winter evening resists
Identity. The thing he carries resists

The most necessitous sense. Accept them, then,
As secondary (parts not quite perceived

Of the obvious whole, uncertain particles
Of the certain solid, the primary free from doubt,

Things floating like the first hundred flakes of snow
Out of a storm we must endure all night,

Out of a storm of secondary things),
A horror of thoughts that suddenly are real.

We must endure our thoughts all night, until
The bright obvious stands motionless in cold."

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments updating for today, I'm going to try and keep going but I'm not convinced I'm not going to fall asleep almost immediately:

8/26 total page count = 74 pages

I'm prioritizing Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital for our september publication task.

message 53: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments I finished the rest of Days of Blood & Starlight, so that's 154 pages today. 416 total for the two days I was hoping to move on to the sequel, but this one took a lot longer than expected. The writing is brilliant, but very dense.

Turns out the read-a-thon is on at the worst possible time for me. I have a work project that needs to be done by the end of the month, and weekends are the only time I really have to work, so I spent half my day on that, and will spend half of tomorrow as well. I also got roped into helping with an event Tuesday evening so I doubt I'll get much reading done that day either.

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Update for 8/26:
Read 60 pages.

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Yesterday was a zero pages day for me (the shame!). We took my four-year-old nephew to Thomas Land and I was so exhausted I fell asleep with my book unopened on my bed beside me. Luckily today is a bank holiday here and I have nothing to do all day but read to make up for it.

Lisa (the.running.bookworm) Yesterday’s page count: 118
Total page count: 453

I completed the Book Title Synonyms & Antonyms game.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Synonyms and Antonyms game completed ( of course I'd be the one to spoil it for everyone, good thing Katie is on top of things today)

1 hour audio The Cuckoo's Calling

Bryony, I'm up to chapter 14, do you have a page count for the Miles Traveled?

Have to make a few important phone calls and then I'm going to keep working on Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital for our September publication... Im a little less than halfway through and i feel like its just going around in circles, like Im reading the same 10 pages over and over. I wish they'd just get on with it already :-(

message 60: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I currently have 4 people listening to audiobooks - is there a fifth? If not, we won't be able to complete those tasks because of the per-person limits.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

I should be able to do at least 2 hours for audio. Not sure about 5 hours though so if anyone else also wants to do some listening feel free.

Tracy, I think chapter 14 would be 118 pages.

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments Here is my poem, Sonnet 38 by Elizabeth Barett Browning:

First time he kissed me, he but only kissed
The fingers of this hand wherewith I write;
And ever since, it grew more clean and white,
Slow to world-greetings, quick with its 'Oh, list,'
When the angels speak. A ring of amethyst
I could not wear here, plainer to my sight,
Than that first kiss. The second passed in height
The first, and sought the forehead, and half missed,
Half falling on the hair. O beyond meed!
That was the chrism of love, which love's own crown,
With sanctifying sweetness, did precede.
The third upon my lips was folded down
In perfect, purple state; since when, indeed,
I have been proud and said, 'My love, my own.'

It acutally reminded me when my husband and i started dating. He kissed me on my forehead the first time we went out with some friends and then really kissed me when we made it official.

Oh good one!!! I think thats it ....
What threw me off was that even with #2 they all did fit my theory, but the book for #1 would have had to be A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Ok so I feel like Ive been reading all day but I've only read 22 pages (!!!) of this book.

Its interesting but so slow, or maybe just a lot of drama happening here today. My girls father got into a car accident today so I've been frantically trying to make sure he's ok, and then I needed a nap.

I'm going to keep going but I'm feeling sleepy so i'm not sure how much more I'll get done. I am 50 % finished though so should be done by tomorrow or wednesday latest :-(

Looks like we still need a few book recommendations and poems so we can check those tasks off the list, that should be an easy one.

Also, I am waiting on a library loan of Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West, for an outside bookclub read, which has several covers that are partly or mostly orange, in case we need that prompt done and I can get my reading speed up to where I hoped it would be.

message 70: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3266 comments Despite my intent to spend the majority of my day reading, I only ended up getting a few hours in the evening. I still managed to read 104 pages of Dreams of Gods & Monsters, which I'm loving! Busy day ahead tomorrow too, so I doubt I'll make much progress.

message 71: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments No more new squares today, but we’re getting close to 2500 pages! I should finish Provenance tomorrow or the next day, and have started on 2 other books I can finish this week as well. The biggest question - can we get to 20 total books?!?

message 72: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments Finished Old Man's War. WOW!!! What a book. It was incredible. Favourite of the year! It can count towards a sci-fi or the book in a series if we need those covered and will go towards our team's total!

That said, I'm at 5 hours audio and a total of 220 pages read for the cumulative counts.

message 73: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments With Peter’s book finish, we got squares 9 and 19.
Yay!

Lisa (the.running.bookworm) FYI I do have an audiobook on the go too, just haven’t listened in a few days as have been off work. Tend to listen to it on my commute. Back tomorrow so should be able to add to the audiobook total :)

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Pompeii by Robert Harris which works for orange cover.

Going to attempt the music game ...no clue what i'm going to put there , I don't seem to listen to music that often...its usually my girls stuff

I just did that one. It was quite fun but some of them were super hard to pick, both books and music-wise.

Lisa (the.running.bookworm) Today’s page count: 95
Total: 548 :)

message 81: by Peter (new)

The new team board is being posted now, in the main topic. I'm going to remove the completed prompts for the sake of keeping things a little more simple.

The new board will be a continuation of the read-a-thon so the book, audio, and page totals are for all reading since the start of the read-a-thon. They can simply be tacked on to our current totals.

message 84: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments Looking for a little clarification if anyone can help...

So we now have a new grid with new covers to figure out. Cumulative page count/audio hours don't reset, but any books counted towards the first grid won't count here right?

Are we supposed to still finish the first grid or do we just move on to the second one now?

message 85: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Peter from looking at the other teams setups it looks like we finish off the first board with the current prompts and then the second board has a whole new set of prompts

message 86: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I am so confused! I don’t understand how to update our spreadsheet now. Where are the new prompts?

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Rachel wrote: "I'm confused too. I had no idea that another grid was coming at all. I've had a busy week though so I probably just missed it in the instructions..."

The original prompts we still need to complete are listed under the first board at the beginning of this thread. Any prompts we've already completed have been removed. Underneath that, a second board has been added and all of the new prompts are listed... I believe the page totals and audio hours are cumulative from where we already are with the first round.

I may have some of that wrong.

I am desperately trying to finish this freaking book for published in September... what a week :/ Its moving much faster now. I am determined to finish it overnight since my meds have me wide awake again.

We still need all members to contribute a poem and book recommendation, and also, the read-a thon- games have been updated for two boards. So if we have completed all the games Saturday through Tuesday we can check that off our list for the first board.

message 89: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments I think we've completed task 19 (sci-fi/fantasy) unless the sci-fi book I finished got used for something else. And we've got to be close to completing 14 (10 hours audio).

My question though is... do we need to complete the first tasks before moving on to the second? We've figured out the covers for the first grid, so... shouldn't we just move on to the second grid to figure those out? Or do we now choose which grid/task our books are counting towards now? So when I finish Arm of the Sphinx can I choose to use it for the sci-fi/fantasy task (assuming it's still not completed) from the first grid or a book borrowed from the library from the second grid?

message 90: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments Peter, I did credit 19 to you.

If you look at the spreadsheet I linked early on you can check my work.

I don’t have time to make a new spreadsheet, but maybe one of the other teams will help with that.

I think maybe we can work on both boards simultaneously, since they are both posted?

I posted this question in the announcements thread.

Oh, ok, I didn't check the spreadsheet, just saw the tile hadn't been uncovered on the grid yet.

Tracy wrote: I think maybe we can work on both boards simultaneously, since they are both posted?"

That would make sense. Most of the tasks we have from grid 1 are cumulative anyways, aside from a couple so they'll get complete as we work towards the other cumulative ones on grid 2.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Good Morning team:-)

I was up super late last night trying to finish the beast that is Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital, only 100-ish pages to go. This will count as my 2nd ATY book ( max) Also, since we've finished our first board we can move this to the 2nd board prompt Non Fiction....Has our theme guess been verified?

I'm on page 305/449, so I'm getting there but I just took a break to start something else...its taking too long and also, my girls have loaded a bunch of video games on my kindle so every other page of the book is not loading today :/ I think I can contribute better if I move on to some other books.

I completed the Music and Books tag and also the Guess the Covers game

I also have been participating in the 9th mini poll discussion , waiting for 10 to open up, but anyone who is discussing on the threads gets a checkmark for that.

My favorite Book to Movie Adaptations:
The Last Unicorn
and
The Lord of the Rings trilogy

I have several picture books to read to my girls today, so I can get in my max 3 for that task, also, I have to move on to The Voyage to Magical North which could count as child character ( its due back the 31st)

Some others that could work:

I can get through a graphic novel easily, I just bought a handful
so This One Summer
and I have Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood sitting here which has a red cover.

American War a library book?

and I think this one has a beautiful cover and I can probably do it in one sitting ( an overlap):
The Smell of Other People's Houses by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock

message 94: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1137 comments I'm almost done updating the categories on our spreadsheet, should be able to finish during a break later today. I will have to go back to get new pages and hours totals, since I stopped recording them after we maxed out the previous categories - if folks could post here with their current page and hour totals, that would be helpful so I don't have to comb back through the posts and add things up.

My favorite recent book to movie adaptation is probably The Martian - I think both were good although different.

It looks like Bryony may have gotten caught up with something.

If someone in the group wants to tell me which squares you have completed for boards 1 and 2, I can go ahead and remove the squares for you :)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I believe I got updated on your progress from reading through the thread. I apologize for blindsiding you with a new board. I could have sworn Bryony said her group wanted one.

The new board is really just a continuation of board 1. So all tasks are cumulative. You can't count the individual book prompts for multiple boards (i.e. the same book couldn't count for 19 on board 1 and and 8 on board 2.

After I posted them, I realized it would have been more clear if I numbered board 2 with prompts 25-48. It's just one giant board.

But I'm updating board 1 in the main topic. I can try to update your progress the best I can, just post which squares need to be removed as you complete them.

Board 2 will also contain blocks to cover title and author to make it a little more challenging to guess books. Feel free to work on both boards simultaneously.
