Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments I liked the good for you prompt! Anything that makes you laugh is perfect for this category! I’ll probably put something like “Bachelor Nation” or “Hey Ladies!” In this slot!!

Yes, The Millions list can be any year :)

message 53: by Chinook (last edited Aug 22, 2018 10:26PM) (new)

Chinook | 639 comments For challenge overlap - I don’t do it, but I wouldn’t consider it cheating. I absolutely will slot in graphic novels and short stories and even a picture book or two, as long as they fit the prompt. I do read a lot and have no problem with reading enough books to cover ATY, Book Riot and Pop Sugar prompts without overlap - my challenge is focusing on the prompts and not just reading whatever all the time!

I haven't thought of this one, but it's a great interpretation.

Laura, thanks for clearing it up. I voted for that prompt because when I took a look at the list, there were so many authors that I didn't know or haven't even heard of. I need to keep expanding my reading repertoire.

message 55: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments That was a tough vote. Some really, really great ideas here. I'd be very happy with the majority of them honestly.

message 56: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments LOL I love your comparison between the book good for you and the vegetable. You are right, I am going for the chips :D I am sorry now that I downvoted that one

message 57: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments I was driving myself a little crazy trying to narrow down from 9 (!) prompts I really liked so I decided to just get it over with and vote with my gut. In an attempt to make it a little more challenging, I chose a couple that I was less likely to read otherwise over the ones that I knew would be super easy to fill.

For my tops, I chose:

Strong sense of Place
High/Low
Book about social justice
Immortality

I only chose two bottoms. I went with carnival/circus setting because, as someone else mentioned, after recently reading The Night Circus, I doubt any other will compare favorably. I also downvoted the drink in title prompt because I don't generally like title prompts and we already have a bunch on the list.

I almost downvoted the experimental book but after looking at the provided list, I realized there were a few on my TBR.

I did the same thing! I had to eliminate some prompts because, even though I liked the prompt a lot, I thought they may be too easy to fill and I wanted a bit more challenge. We have almost all the same top votes (with the exception of social justice, but that was one I was debating about and I'd be happy if it made it in).

message 59: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments I voted the same way! (Except my votes were completely different.). There were twelve categories I really liked, and I had to whittle that down based on which ones might push me a bit and which ones I really really REALLY liked!

My top four:
The Millions M-A lists (I LOVE the Millions Most Anticipated lists!!)
Male & female protagonist linked books
Drink in the title
Experimental

I really hope "experimental" makes it because that will be so interesting to research! But even if it doesn't, I think I will try to work in some books from that suggested list, anyway.

message 60: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2641 comments So, I randomly typed "high low" into google (because my brain just wasn't doing anything interesting with that prompt).

There is a podcast called The High Low. One of the podcasters wrote a memoir Everything I Know About Love, which could fit for this prompt. And they discuss a lot of cultural and political stuff, so you could make many different books fit for the prompt based on this podcast.

A high-low is
1. a lace-up boot with a low heel, reaching to the ankle, worn by military personnel in the 18th and early 19th centuries
2. poker game in which the high and low hands split the pot
So you could do one book set in the 18th or 19th century and/or about the military and a book that somehow relates to poker (like the word King in the title or an author named Jack).

High Low was the name of an album for both Nathan Wiley and Nada Surf. You could do two books that somehow relate to songs from those albums.

There is a show on HGTV called The High Low Project so....I don't know....? Are there fiction books about interior design? Ha!

There is a movie called High and Low. The plot is "an executive of a shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur's son is kidnapped and held for ransom." I think it'd be pretty easy to find books that correlate to that somehow.

This is probably completely meaningless and pointless.

message 61: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments I really don't understand why after The Night Circus, a circus setting doesnt't make sense :( I read Water for Elephants (set in a circus) and enjoyed it very much, I read Joyland (set in amusement park) and really loved it! I definitely will read The Night Circus, because it must be awesome according to what everyone says ... well, I guess those books can fit also in another categories, I was just thinking out loud :P

message 62: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments Silvia, for me personally, I’m just not super interested in that setting. I read Water for Elephants and it was fine. I’m sort of interested in The Night Circus. But nothing about these settings really excites me. I can see that it might not be hard to find a book for the prompt that I might enjoy, but I’m not overly excited about the idea of doing so. One circus book seems like enough circus books to me, considering I’ve never actually even been to one - and due to lack of interest.

message 63: by Rachelnyc (new)

Rachelnyc | 943 comments It being difficult to narrow down all the prompts I liked was definitely a good problem to have. I feel like we really can't go wrong this week.

Silvia, I realize that probably sounded odd but since it wasn't a setting I was particularly interested in (Night Circus was on my TBR forever and I only finally read it because it fit a prompt and I kept hearing good things), I wouldn't be excited to read another so soon, particularly since I would naturally make a comparison.

Having said that, if it does make it in, I highly recommend The Night Circus! It would also work well for the prompt about having a strong sense of place. The author does an incredible job of making the circus come to life.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11297 comments Mod
I agree with Rachel... I really haven't liked any amusement park/circus setting books that I have read, excepting The Night Circus. I may enjoy other ones, but it's not a prompt I'm very interested in since I will compare every circus book to that one.

Edie | 1152 comments Johanne wrote: "On the subject of doing several challenges - do you fit books in prompts across challenges? I mean, if a book fits a prompt in one challenge and another prompt in another? I kind of like the idea t..."
I am juggling 4 challenges this year. And I do use books across challenges. I generally limit the overlap to two challenges and wouldn't count a book for an "easy" prompt (e.g. a book published in 2018) more than once. A number of the books only fit in one place, so there is no overlap.
I have finished Read Harder (24 prompts), have 5 left to go on ATY with 15 and 22 to go on the other challenges.

message 66: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2641 comments I actually love circus-setting books but have read quite a very lot of them over the last couple years so I didn't vote for the prompt because I sorta need a break from clowns and elephants.

There is a rather enormous list of Circus & Carnival books here on goodreads, for those who may be interested.

message 67: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I liked The Night Circus but thought there was too much about what people were eating or wearing for me. I voted for the circus prompt as I want to read Inzared, Queen of the Elephant Riders

message 68: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I read Geek Show in the past year and absolutely loved it. It would be a great circus setting.

message 69: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Also for those is a book I stumbled up I plan to read next year called FantasticLand. It’s set in an amusement park, and is either a dystopian or horror-esq novel.

message 70: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments That’s definitely gone on my tbr.

message 71: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3891 comments Manda- Fantasticland sounds interesting in a really creepy way! Another good carnival-setting book is Something Wicked this Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I think I read it back in the 1970s.

message 72: by Angie (new)

Angie | 138 comments If the circus/carnival one wins, I might do Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - The Original Screenplay. The trailer makes it look like part of the film is set in a circus, so that would fit.

message 73: by Tammy (new)

Tammy | 704 comments There's always Geek Love for those looking for a little darker side of a circus!

message 74: by Serendipity (new)

Serendipity | 441 comments So many I wanted to vote for . Think I went with portal, social justice, experimental and Bildungsroman. My two bottom picks were for the book you've owned but not read (I can only buy very few books so I don't own any that I haven't read) and the drink prompt since I felt it was too similar to the food prompt. I'd be happy with any of the others though.

Thanks for this suggestion! If the carnival/circus/amusement park prompt makes it through, I'm definitely going to read this one. I love historical fiction that has dual timelines, so it is by far the most interesting-looking circus book I've seen.

That’s funny, Clare - The Life She Was Given was the book that I had in mind when I suggested the circus etc prompt. Although I’d also seen the Greatest Showman earlier this hear and have been thinking about reading more about PT Barnum, but haven‘t got around to it, so that also influenced me.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Is tomorrow results day?? Ive been thinking its been so quiet on these boards with the read a thon going on...
I came across a review of a book in my feed this morning that had a picture of a carnival on the cover/ferris wheel and tents.... made a mental note to check back but now I can't find it to read the description, so I'll have to go hunt. It looked like contemporary/ maybe a little romance or something?

Anyways if that prompt made it through Ive had FantasticLand on my kindle for a while so that would be my pick, or possibly The Life She Was Given, which is on my TBR... I'll just throw it on my rejects list lol
