I think the main character was a boy. I also think the story was comedic and not as episodic. Thanks though.
I distinctly remember at one point the boy kept asking the dog questions, and the dog would eat sandwiches so it didn't have to answer any questions.
Not sure if Remarkable Ramsey, the Talking Dog by Barbara Rinkoff could be your book. It features a boy and a talking dog. I remember the dog eating but not sure if they were peanut butter sandwiches.

It concerned a boy who can talk to his dog, and the dog liked eating peanut butter sandwiches. At one point, the boy wanted the dog to give information, but the dog kept putting food in its mouth. I believe the father might have found out the dog could talk, but I'm not sure.
It's written in English. That's all I remember.
