SOLVED. YA adventure book that starts with a D [s]

an adventure and possibly young adult book. there is a color changing flower,if burnt the ash will blind you. there is a scene where the characters are in the woods and if they look behind them something bad will happen. also in the begining the main character in a tree. he shoots a arrow at a cyclops statue

i read it 4-5 years ago. i know there are two male authors that wrote it because we had an assembley to promote the book. the book cover might have been brown or gold. the main charater was a male. the whole goal was for the boy to plant the flower to restore a town, that then grew into a tree. the town people might have lived in the tree?
