SOLVED. Teenage level fantasy book about a girl who is learning truth seeking/she can get people to tell her secrets? Or a power similar to that. [s]

I read this back when I was in school, about six years ago, in Britain. I think it was called something like the truth seeker's daughter, but I can't find it under that name.

Fantasy setting, roughly medieval period. There was a girl who had the power to draw secrets out of people, possibly apprenticed to her mother who had the same sort of talent. They lived in a village and I think they provided this as a sort of trade/service?

Her estranged father was, if not a bad guy, a thief or rogue of some sort with a connection to snakes - I feel as though he had a snake ring or motif. It is possible he also had a magical ability that combined with the girl's.

I believe it was a series, and at some stage the girl had to rescue a close male friend (or maybe brother) from a castle, who may have been indoctrinated into being a child soldier for an evil duke.

I realize this is a bit scattered, but I'd be awfully glad if someone had any ideas! Thank you.
