SOLVED. YA fantasy/sci-fi about winged warriors

The MC is of “lower class” but somehow gets (recruited?) to a mission. He is given a pair of (golden?) wings in a surgery and is able to go to a school with the “higher class” kids. In this school, they simulate a war that lasts a long time. The MC ends up becoming the leader of his group of fighters. I believe this is the first book in either a trilogy or series. I read the book maybe two years ago and I feel like I looked up if there would be more books, but they had not been released yet. TIA for all your help.
