Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments I can't believe the book is finally here! I have been looking forward to reading it for so long.

Discussion Questions - Day 1
Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?
I think was a wise decision. Newborns don't really have much personality and would be difficult to involve as a character. a thirteen-month-old, on the other hand, will have developed many personality traits and is also at an age where he understands more and can be communicated with to some extent.

2. To me the opening prologue really showcases how far Kate has come from the loner mercenary in the first book. What impressed you most about it?
I must admit it wasn't anything in particular that stood out to me.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be?
He would be the first person to suspect, but I feel that whenever he has done something he doesn't really try to hide that he was behind it, he wants them to know it when he does. Besides, this action isn't like him.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?
I think that to Kate, Nick is kind of family in a way. She understands his hatred but also doesn't let it affect her behavior around him. If I were in her shoes I would be pretty fed up with the Order by now and how they handle things. I think her protecting Nick is her way of saying "Enough!".

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favorite Conlan moment so far?
I really liked his "uh oh" at the beginning, so charming! But his stubbornness about the honey was quite cute too.

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him?
I didn't really think of it as a wrap-up, but I suppose that is correct. Not really surprised, he is young and still hasn't found his place in the world, unlike Derek, even though there isn't much age difference between them. The part where Raphael talks about loyalty makes it quite understandable that Ascanio didn't come and ask himself.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I’m thinking I should have read Iron and Magic before this :D

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments DQ’s Day 2 Chapter 6-10

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is partly dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?
I don't remember him specifically. I honestly just thought something had picked him up and thrown him at first before we got to know that he was a dragon. Not quite sure what I think is going on yet.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?I'm thinking that this guy might be the culprit himself and if not then he is probably connected to whoever is behind Serenbe.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?
At the moment it is just a theory, we will have to see if they can figure out if that is correct or not.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?
I understand their hesitancy about trusting the Pack after receiving that information. Jim is a complicated character and after he became the Beast Lord he hasn't really been that good a friend, always putting the Pack first no matter the consequences. So I would not want to believe that he can betray them like this, but I wouldn't take the risk of going in blind either.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?
I don't follow the author's newsletter, so I don't really need those stories. There is a lot of great scenes with Conlan, it is impossible to choose only one.

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2438 comments DQ’s Day 3 Chapter 11-14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

I think they both love the other so much they want to make sure that person (and their son) survives and are willing to do anything to make that happen. They also know the other will be pissed at them, so they don't share. And yes, it is a breakdown in communication.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?

Well, we saw no one wanted to believe it was true. Everyone will come together, as they have no choice if they want to survive. And I was right on my guess this was the same group that attacked in Hugh's book!

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?

I think Conlan will just roll with it. He is a shapeshifter, which already skews the personality about death (hunting animals). He will be fine, if a little different.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?

I hated Hugh in the previous Kate Daniels books and was amazed that he was somewhat redeemed in his own book. It seems like they are trying even harder to completely redeem him here, which for some reason really annoys me.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?

She knows Kate is overprotective, but at the same time she wants to do her share in protecting the family.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

No, this loving partnership is awesome!

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?

I think when he reaches for Kate after she kills the Sahanu.

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
I think they both know the other would have objected, but they also both know they are doing what needs to be done. So I think while they should have communicated, they can trust that they know each other well enough to be able to trust each other to do what is best. And luckily, Curran knows her well enough to anticipate her martyr tendency LOL

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
YAY DRAGONS :D Umm, the current alliances are always shifting between tense and close. I think they'll pull through like they always do.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
I think Conlan is going to be amazing. I am hoping we get some Conlan stories from Ilona in the future

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
I've liked the growth and change we've seen, and I've liked seeing things from his perspective. He's gone from stereotypical villain to deeper nuanced character. And yes, I really like his story now.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
I think she knows Kate has plenty to deal with, and I think Julie has aged and learned a lot from Roland and Erra and is prepared to help Kate in ways Kate doesn't know she needs.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

Obviously, the loving partnership. DUH! :P

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
All of them!

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

I think it’s more not wanting to get in arguments with how head strong they both are. Both will do whatever it takes to protect their family.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
I finished yesterday, so I won’t say too much. Kate definitely has an uphill battle to get everyone on the same page.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
Kate is. I don’t’ think it will impact him in a bad way. He will know his mother will do anything to protect him.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
I was waiting for Hugh to show up!!! I have always loved Hugh, even when he did horrible things. Christopher’s thoughts really didn’t change my mind about him since I read Blood and Magic. I do like the insight he gave Kate about Hugh’s actions.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
I think she is protecting Kate so she doesn’t inadvertently commands Julie to not to do something.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.
Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

No I do not miss the tension. I love their banter. It’s a great way to show their intimacy and how much their relationship has grown. Regardless of how much they disagree with how to handle a situation, they don’t let it fester and destroy their relationship.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
With as sweet as Conlan can be, I love it when he lets instinct take over when he needs to protect himself. Tearing up Razor was pretty awesome.

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) | 5684 comments Discussion Questions - Day 1
Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?
I think it was a good choice. Toddles have more personality to show and interact with. So we really got to see Conlan. (Although I wouldn’t mind a short story/novella of Kate’s pregnancy and the first year.)

2. To me the opening prologue really showcases how far Kate has come from the loner mercenary in the first book. What impressed you most about it?
I love seeing all the people supporting Kate and the family she have build. She opened her heart and she truly has people she can rely on.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be?
I don’t think Roland is responsible. I think it goes back to what Hugh and Elara were dealing with in their book.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?
I think Kate understands why Nick treats her. She doesn’t take his hostility, but also knows that he is good at his job.

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favourite Conlan moment so far?
Conlan is fantastic. So many moment so far, but probably when he challenged Robert. Can’t wait to continue reading to see what else he gets up to.

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him?
I’m not suprised. He may not work with Kate anymore, but still family.

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?
I don’t remember him. I think he may have shown up in a short story and I haven’t quite read them all yet.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?
I not sure which way to think on him. If he’s responsible for Serenbe or will be part of the help.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?
Not sure. Would think it was very contagious it would be difficult to contain.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?
It’s hard to say that the pack would not fight with Kate. However the pack has been funny when Jim took over. I remember the friendship of Kate and Jim in earlier books. I think that the Pack will stand with them.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favourite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?
He’s so great. Love him and would love short stories with him. He takes over page when he’s there.

Chapter 11 - 14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
I think that they each do whatever is necessary to get the job done.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
It will probably take everyone working together to fight the threat.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
No, I‘m not worried about Conlan.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
Reading Hugh’s book gave some insight and a different perspective of him. I liked that and I did like Christopher’s view.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
She knows Kate is protective and has learned from Kate in doing what you think is best. Plus she is doing what she can to help.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

“admit what?
He pointed to himself.
All this is too much for you
I rolled my eyes.”

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

I love them in this loving partnership. Love their banter. The relationship between them had grown and they can depend on each other.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favourite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
Any time he is on page is great.

Natalie | 974 comments I stayed up and finished last night, but here are more answers.

DQ’s Day 2 Chapter 6-10
7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?

I remember him. I read all the novellas. I think he was first in Magic Dreams when Dali finds him and then Magic Tests where he's a student at Julie's school. I love dragons so I was happy to see him again. I skipped the novellas during my reread this summer and I don't think he appears in the main series otherwise.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?

Finished so can't answer. At the time I had no idea who it was. But I found the whole getting caught off thing funny.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?

Finished so can't answer.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?

Finished so can't answer.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?

Finished so can't answer. I can't remember what happened in these sections versus the rest.

DQ’s Day 3 Chapter 11-14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

I don't think they had a breakdown in communication, they clearly both had plans that they knew the other wouldn't agree with and didn't share on purpose.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?

Finished so can't answer. But just want to comment again that I love dragons.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?

Finished so can't answer as that concern comes up. I am content with how it was resolved. It does make me hope that we eventually get some sort of novella/series of Conlan as an adult.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?

I love Hugh! I was pretty sure he would show up at some point and did read Iron and Magic when it was released. But I had actually forgotten about him for a while. In my earlier comment I said that Nick was the closest thing Kate had to a brother, but Hugh does fit that role much better and I forgot about him when I said that. Nick is maybe that cousin on the other side of your family who just hates you/your side for some issue years ago. I think they did go a bit far in redeeming Hugh. I would have been fine with just a change of heart, but I don't think that would work for everyone. I look forward to the rest of Hugh's trilogy.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?

Finished so can't answer.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

Both have been fun to read. One of my favorite parts of the series is seeing both and how their relationship has evolved through each book. They did have a lot of disagreements after getting together in Book 4, but it's never been a stupid misunderstanding argument. I've really enjoyed seeing them work together as a couple.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?

Finished so can't answer. I can't remember what happened in these sections versus the rest.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Discussion Questions - Day 1
Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?
It seemed a little unnecessary to me. I'm sure they had their reasons but I think it could have started at 13 months and been fine.

2. To me the opening prologue really showcases how far Kate has come from the loner mercenary in the first book. What impressed you most about it? She finally accepted that she had a family and could get help and not have to do it all alone.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be? So I read the whole book in one sitting so I know who the villain is but as I was reading it, I didn't think it was Roland. Not his style.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?
Kate knew exactly what she was doing. I think she is forgiving and also doesn't get along with everyone so if she can work with you, she's going to give you a chance or five.

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favorite Conlan moment so far? Him curling up with Grendel.

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him? I get why Raphael came to speak for him but I think it was a little weak and I was disappointed.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) 7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?
I don't remember him either but I know that the authors don't usually bring someone around like that unless they will be important later.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?
Whoever he is, I don't trust him. But I don't trust anyone. I don't think he's responsible for Serenbe.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think? I think they are being super deliberate in how, when and where it's released.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting? This part worried me a lot. I trust in the Pack but this part was worrisome.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book? His smile and his uh-ohs. Smart kid.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) 12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

Seems pretty par for the course for their relationship and romance tropes in general. I don't tell you XYZ to protect you.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown? I think this dragon doesn't know what he's in for when they all get together and kick his ass.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it? I think he's just going to roll with it. He's seen so much already and is the kid of Kate and Curran after all, it won't be the last time.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh? Hugh's book changed my view on him so I had an advantage going in.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate? Either she's doing something she know Kate won't like or she's trying to protect her.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?
I love the partnership. I think their banter has gotten better as their relationship has progressed. Reminds me of Eve and Roarke.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book? Any time this kid is on the page.

Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
I think so. I love how willing they are to protect their family, but I feel like they need to share with each other.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
I think that everyone will want to unite to defeat the dragon.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
I don’t think that it will impact him too much. I think that when he grows up, he will realize, ya, it’s fine if these are the bad guys.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
He is pretty cool, and so far nothing can change my opinion on it.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
I think one because she is her mother, and second, because she possibly can control Julie.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

I like this partnership better. This is pretty funny.

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
No. Curran already knows Kate will sacrifice herself to save him and Conlan if nothing else works. Kate knows Curran has a reason and a plan which will eventually make sense. No communication necessary just trust.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
If anything a dragon will pull everyone together.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
Both of his parents kill monsters to protect others. I think he'll just roll with it.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
I thought he was a psychopath. Realizing that Roland was constantly forcing away his natural instincts and emotions makes me glad that he has found a place in the world to be happy.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
She wants to help and knows Kate would stop her in the name of protecting her.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

I prefer the partnership. The tension went on a bit longer than necessary in my opinion.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
Conlan snuggled up with Martha.

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments DQ’s Day 2 Chapter 6-10

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?

I read that short so knew who Yu Fong was when he appeared. Had no idea what was going on & why/how he appeared the way he did. The authors don't usually put things in that won't be important later so figured it would be important.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?

Thought he was a new villain, which really confused me because I thought this was going to be mostly about the final battle with Roland.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?

Didn't think it was contagious.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?

That made the Pack seem really shady. Shocking but at the same time I could believe that they would betray Kate & Curran because Jim had already made it clear before that the Pack comes first.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?

I pretty much loved all the scenes with Conlan!

Cathy M. (mccathy77) | 5976 comments DQ’s Day 3 Chapter 11-14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

This isn't the 1st time they've done this. This is just who they are - doing things without talking it thru for one reason or another. It's something they feel they need to do to protect the other. Not great for their relationship but could be necessary at the end of the day.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?

They won't have much of a choice - they have to ally & fight together or they won't succeed.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned about that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?

I think he's too young to remember something so horrifying, & I'm sure at this point, he doesn't fully understand what he saw.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?

I hated Hugh. Can't say I like him all that much, even after reading his book, but I think he's come a long way since he was 1st introduced & understand him a lot better.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?

She knows how Kate will react & feels like she has to do what she does in that manner (keeping these secrets).

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

I loved the banter in the beginning, but love them in a relationship even more. The intimacy, the closeness.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?

All of them!

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?
I think the motive is partially to atone, but also that he recognizes that fighting with Kate is his best chance at defeating Neig. No, I think Andrea should have told her the truth.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement
The sister part is true and interrupting breakfast is rude.

21. We now know what was in the briefcase and that Roland i trying to win the pack's allegiance through a vial to help Dali and Jim conceive. Are they right to mistrust the vial? Hugh can help them with their fertility issues but it will be an incredibly painful procedure for Dali.Do you think she will ever convince jim that they should go through with it?
Yes, I would absolutely mistrust anything from Roland. I agree with Kate that Dali will eventually win.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?
I thought the realm seemed well matched to the deagon. Kate was definitely right to visit in order to gather intel, and I found it funny that Roland was so determined to yell at her first.

23. Kate nearly lost Curran before the battle as the balance between humanity and godhood started to tip. Was Curran right to do what he did given the reasons we later find out. Were you surprised when you found out he had done it to resurrect her when she died trying to kill her father? Do you think he should have told her before hand? Do you think perhaps this ocld have gone very wrong?
I think Curran took the only course possible. I figured that it had something to do with saving Kate although I hadn't considered resurrection. I'm not sure telling her beforehand mattered. Kate knows him well enough to understand his has a good reason for what he does. It clearly could have gone wrong if Kate hadn't been able to stabilize him during the tech wave.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
I thought the choice of bagpipes was odd but funny. I think Kate followed the only plan that gave them a chance to win although for once it seem to go more smoothly than normal.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?
Yes, I expected the betrayal. I personally would rather that she killed him, but the anchor solution worked. Julie should have stayed at least long enough to talk it out with Kate.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
Roman and maybe Conlan at some point.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?
The escape from the assassin. I'm not sure I can pick one favorite for the book. I think Kate and Curran will find him quite challenging, but I'm confident they will raise a good man.

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?
Yes, I believe Hugh is trying to do the right thing. I think Andrea probably should have told her, but can understand why she didn’t.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement
Hugh realised his relationship with Kate is more brother/sister, so a true statement.

21. We now know what was in the briefcase and that Roland i trying to win the pack's allegiance through a vial to help Dali and Jim conceive. Are they right to mistrust the vial? Hugh can help them with their fertility issues but it will be an incredibly painful procedure for Dali. Do you think she will ever convince jim that they should go through with it?
Yep, they shouldn’t trust the vial from Roland. It’s something Dali desperately wants, so I think she will convince Jim.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?
I think Kate was right in going. She had to see and gather information. It’s funny how Roland acts like a father something and an adversary the other.

23. Kate nearly lost Curran before the battle as the balance between humanity and godhood started to tip. Was Curran right to do what he did given the reasons we later find out. Were you surprised when you found out he had done it to resurrect her when she died trying to kill her father? Do you think he should have told her before hand? Do you think perhaps this could have gone very wrong?
Both Kate and Curran do what is necessary and telling her beforehand wouldn’t have changed anything. They trust each other.
It could have gone wrong, but I’m glad Erra was caught up in the resurrection.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
It was a great idea. Not the typical thing used in battle.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?
I don’t think Roland could have helped himself, so expected the betrayal. I’m glad that was the solution because there are times he shows her love and she loves her father. This way they can see each other but he can’t do any damage.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
Julie, Roman, Conlan. Really anything in this world.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?
When he attacked and escaped from Razor. Conlan was a fantastic character and he shone on the page. I think Kate and Curran (with all the extended family) will raise their son into the best person with all the tools to do right.

Ora (oeamis) Day 4 DQs

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?

Yes. Hugh is dealing with all the things that Roland forced him to do and had to find a way to live with it without Roland’s absolution. He’s struggling with believing he deserves forgiveness, so the only he feels he can do now is do what he feels is right. He really is a good person and proved that when he was fighting Raphael. How many times could he have killed him if he didn’t heal while letting Raphael work through his rage. Yes, they did it out of concern for her and her baby’s health.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast" Hugh to Dali about Kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement
She is. Even Kate has thought about the same thing.

YES!!! Hugh’s explanation of gift from Roland would make anyone weary of accepting it. I think in Hugh’s next book Dali and Jim will show up. I don’t believe Jim will be happy about it because he will have to trust Hugh not to hurt Dali both physically and ripping her last hope for a child from her.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it? What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted?
When Kate first entered, it was meant to impress her. It was a bit scary when he showed her his army in stasis. Yes, it was because it was needed to get intel. I kind of thought it was funny. I can’t blame him for being upset. There was a chance Neig could have killed her. I do believe he loves Kate, and as a parent he felt it was his right to let her know how stupid he thinks her actions were.

Yes! He will do anything to protect Kate. With Erra’s help he was given the method to be able to save her life. I was surprised. For a moment I thought there would not be a HEA. I am a bit torn with him telling Kate beforehand. Kate would have had a problem with a slightest chance in losing Curran. There is always a chance of things going wrong, but with Erra guiding him, he had a better chance of it not.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
That was good strategy. It helped saved lives. Kate’s plans always seem to work out one way or another.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?
I think it’s his nature. I loved that Kate was able to manipulate Roland into becoming the anchor. I don’t know if I was surprised. I believe she would eventually command Julie to do something. I am just glad that Julie knows Kate so well and realized that she needed to leave so Kate wouldn’t have have to live with the guilt every day she saw her. At least now Kate will have a chance to forgive herself.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
There are so many characters. I would love a short story/novella with Christopher and Barbas’s wedding, Roman, Ascanio, Derek and Julie.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?
I loved the scene with Razor. I think it’s hard to just pick one. I believe he will be a good man. He has so much family that will teach him the right thing to do and how to defend himself and to defend those who are weaker than him. I really hope he will eventually get his own series.

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) 19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?
I think it was a good idea to not tell Kate given their history. I guess having read Hugh's book prior made me believe Hugh's motives. Plus Elara is really the boss.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement

I teared up, no lie.

I would never trust anything from Roland and I'm glad they didn't go through with it and that Hugh was there to give them more info.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted I actually laughed at that part because it was such a normal father/daughter thing.

I think this was risky but it was also kind of beautiful that they were both willing to make these huge sacrifices so that the other person could live.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did? Bagpipes make me go crazy so I didn't think it was too nuts of a strategy. Kate is a genius.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue? I was mad at Kate for doing the one thing to Julie she promised she'd never do. I get it but I'm still mad. I expected Roland to betray Kate and was kind of mad the way that got resolved though not totally unexpected.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about? I think that there was set-up for a Julie spinoff and a Conlan spinoff.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older? That kid is hilarious and a genius and I think we should all be afraid of him in some way.

Yes, I believe Hugh wants to atone. I'm not sure Andrea shouldn't have told Kate about Hugh by now, maybe not when she was pregnant, but later she should have.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement

I think it is cute that Hugh thinks of Kate as a sister. And I think Kate is starting to think of him as a brother as well. What a couple of bad-a$$ siblings.

Yes, always mistrust gifts from Roland! Yes, Dali will convince Jim because he wants children as well and she really wears the pants in that relationship.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?

Of course she had to go, it is hard to win a war without information. Roland's ward to scream at Kate is such a dad thing to do.

I was surprised he could resurrect her and I think he didn't tell her beforehand in case it didn't work. Kate would have totally done the same thing in his place.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?

That was brilliant research to discover the bagpipes hurt them. I never expect Kate's plans to work out as planned, but she always manages to win.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?

Of course he was going to betray her, that is probably why he was so late, so his soldiers would live. I think it is great he still exists somewhere, as he is a good father when he gets over trying to run the world.

I am very surprised Julie left Derek. I do understand her reasoning, but think she should have stayed.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?

I'm pretty sure Julie and Derek will get another book. I'd also LOVE to see a book (or more) about Roman. His profession and family would make for tons of interesting conflicts.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?

Conlan is adorable and I don't know how Kate and Curran are going to keep up with him as he grows.

Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?

Good with me. I am glad Kate and Curran were able to enjoy some time where the biggest threat they had to face was a poopy diaper.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be?

I don't think so. Doesn't seem his style, really. I think it is some big baddie never referenced before, something epic that will need a final alliance of ALL the powers to battle.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?

Kate gets Nick - the sense of betrayal, abandonment - and sees him as more of a brother, perhaps because of Greg. She gets that his sense of honor will ultimately control how he decides to act.

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favorite Conlan moment so far?

I love that Kate sees that Conlan has Curran's sense of humor - can't wait to see how that develops!

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him?

Having read Iron and Magic, I expect that Ascanio will have a continuing role there, so I'm not surprised that he is leaving Cutting Edge. Now if it was Derek? That would shock me.

I think that he want to join Kate, but only because he thinks that it will help him defeat Neig.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement
I think that he was loving Kate, and also being sarcastic because his breakfast got ruined.

Yes, I wouldn’t trust Roland.. I think that she will convince Jim.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?
I think that it was amusing that Roland wanted to yell at Kate uninterrupted so bad that he made a blood ward. I think that Kate was definitely right to accept the invitation.

23. Kate nearly lost Curran before the battle as the balance between humanity and godhood started to tip. Was Curran right to do what he did given the reasons we later find out. Were you surprised when you found out he had done it to resurrect her when she died trying to kill her father? Do you think he should have told her before hand? I definitely think that it could have gone very wrong. I think that Curran was right to do it though especially considering that he saved Kate.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
The bagpipes were definitely interesting. I think that she did a good job and that she took a necessary risk.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?
Yes, I definitely did expect a betrayal. I never trusted Roland to begin with.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
Conlan definitely.

I loved every Conlan moment. I can’t say that I have a particular favorite. I think that his parents will raise him right and teach him what is good.

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?

After reading Iron and Blood I'm sure Hugh is sincere in his motives. He's still a warlord but his reasons for his previous actions including Roland's influence were explained very well without taking away that he still is a bada**. And Andrea and Raphael must have made some sort of peace with him therefore not letting Kate know where he was, maybe they felt that it wasn't the time for the show down while Kate was pregnant and unsure about her father.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement.

Explains where Hugh is up to in his "rehabilitation" and the relationship Kate and him will probably settle into .

Never trust Roland!! And I think eventually Jim will see how much it means to Dali and go along with the treatment.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?

The whole set up of the realm in the "bubble" and the anchor and how that played into Roland's defeat was inspired! Great part of the plot development.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?

Well, many would say that bagpipes drive everybody crazy, LOL. Clever how the two plots worked in together. I never thought of that.

Another great part of the plot. We should have guessed that Curran would risk anything to keep Kate and Conlan safe. There was many ways it could have gone wrong.. but as this is the last book of the series and the hint was in the title Magic Triumphs so I was guessing that everything would end up okay

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?

Roland kept completely in character when he betrayed Kate, and I wasn't surprised. Kate wouldn't been able to help herself to save Julie and so I wasn't surprised that Julie although she would have realised this, decided to put some distance between them. And it means there can be a spin off with Julie and the younger characters making their way in the world sans Kate and Curran.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?

See answer above. I'm feeling definitely a Julie and Derek book in the wind.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?

Love the way the Andrews wrote Conlan. Again, I hope will be seeing more of him in future spin off series.

Chapter 15 - end

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?

I like Hugh, so I believe him. Based off his book he was willing to go against Roland regardless to help save his people. I'm not sure about Raphael and Andrea, maybe it was around the time that Kate was super pregnant/just had Conlan so they didn't want to distract her.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast" Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement

Again, I like Hugh, so I found it funny. I honestly would love a good fanfiction of them growing up together.

They are right to mistrust the vial, it may work, but I'm pretty sure it would have some consequences. Roland wanted to take out the Pack long before he knew about Kate being in the area, he wouldn't ignore that opportunity. I think she will convince Jim and we'll probably see it in one of Hugh's books.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it? What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?

Honestly didn't have many thoughts of Neig's realm, clearly he was overconfident as he had the anchor in plain sight. Loved the blood ward scene, especially when Erra got in on it. I have an older brother so it was fun to watch.

Definitely could have gone wrong, though obviously, I'm glad it didn't. I understand the reasons for it to remain secret.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?

Oh bagpipes, nice to see them have their moment of glory. I hoped the plan would work, but I wasn't sure if it would. A lot of the times a plot device is if a plan is described in a book/movie, it's not going to work out versus if the scene is just "I have a plan" and then move on to the event.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?

I was pretty open minded coming in and didn't have any preconceived ideas of what would happen. I did think/hope that Kate, Conlan, and Curran would survive at least. I wasn't sure how/what Roland's fate would be, but I found it fitting. The Julie part makes sense. Kate would protect her, even if she had to go against her word. It was the right move in the end.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?

Julie/Derek, especially Julie after her adventures with Erra. I think the authors had said they may write about her, but that they don't write YA so there would be a time jump. Although there was a big jump in this book so she may be 18 now? Still, give her a few years and more experience and then check in.

Apparently at a fan event Gordon mentioned having (view spoiler) as a couple which I would have never put together on my own but now that it's in my mind I want to read about so much.

I think another Jim/Dali novella maybe after/during Hugh's trilogy would fit nicely. I'd also love to see more of Roman.

Finally, Conlan. I would love to see him (and any other siblings) as adults.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?

I had finished before I got to day 2 of the questions, so I haven't been answering as I wasn't 100% sure what happened when, but my overall favorite part was when he unleashed his blood claws. As I said above, I would be happy to read about him as an adult.

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?

I think I have to make some time soon to read Iron and Blood! But I do believe what he is saying because I've always been extremely interested in what was making Hugh tick. I think Andrea was helping Kate with stress reduction :)

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement.

I think he's looking for family connections, might be part of his atonement, but he knows Kate will understand his background and experiences and I think he needs that kind of support.

She'll convince him!

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?

So glad she did, considering how critical it was to the final battle. These moments of dadness always drive me insane with Roland.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?

Loved it, and it never goes as I expect.

They are as they are, I'm glad it worked out, but I think Curran was probably concerned whether this would work or not. I think he would have been devastated if it didn't work.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?

I was hoping he wouldn't betray, but knew he would. I was so sad about Julie, I completely understand why Kate did it, but knowing how much that hurt Julie was so sad.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?

I adore Derek, so he better be in there! Also, can't wait to see Conlan as a young man.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?

Still love when he first changes.

Laura | 5524 comments Discussion Questions - Day 1
Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?
I think it was a good decision. I wouldn't want to be cheated of Kate giving birth, but from the outside, the first months of a baby's life are boring (not from the inside, of course!).

2. To me the opening prologue really showcases how far Kate has come from the loner mercenary in the first book. What impressed you most about it?
She had so many people around her, loving her and supporting her.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be?
I don't think he is, but then I've already read Iron & Magic.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?
I think she treated the Order members exactly as expected. She doesn't have much use for the Order, but Nick is different because he's family. I honestly thought holding Conlan would have affected him more than it did. How can you hold that sweetie and not acknowledge his humanity & worth?

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favorite Conlan moment so far?
All of them! I want a Conlan book when he grows up! :)

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him?
I was surprised, although it makes sense if you think about it. I am surprised (view spoiler)

Laura | 5524 comments DQ’s Day 2 Chapter 6-10

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?
I think he will play a role. Magic Tests

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?
I assumed he was responsible for Serenbe, but no idea who he is.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?
I bet not as contagious.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?
I have to trust that even if Jim is screwed up, Dali will make him see right!

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?
Everything! I love him. I want a baby werelion! :)

Laura | 5524 comments DQ’s Day 3 Chapter 11-14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
I think it is par for the course for them. But I think Curran & Erra have cooked up a scheme!

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
I trust Kate & Curran to annoy everyone into an alliance. :)

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
I think he'll roll with it. He was smart enough to be scared, so he recognized that they were a danger. He just saw Mommy protect him.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
I think it was wise on the part of the authors to release Iron & Magic prior to this book. That one totally changed my perspective, and Christopher's thoughts backed up mine, and helped me see more of what drove Hugh. I can't wait for the next Iron & Magic book, to see how Hugh & Elara got from their relationship at the end of that one, to their relationship in this one!

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
She's learned from the masters, Kate & Curran. Everyone has their part of the plan that they think needs to be a secret.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?
Having read/listened to all the books in the past weeks, I've seen the progression without time gaps between books. I definitely love where they ended up, but also enjoyed the journey to get there.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
In keeping with my previous answers, all of them! :)

Laura | 5524 comments Snowtulip wrote: "I’m thinking I should have read Iron and Magic before this :D"

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?
Having read Iron & Magic, I do believe his motives. But I think Kate should have been told previously. Maybe not right away, but at some point after Conlan got a bit older, Andrea could have sat her down and reasoned with her. After all, Kate avenged Aunt B previously, so her anger wouldn't have been as sharp as Raphael's.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast"Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement?
I think Hugh has learned a lot through his time with Elara. That struck me in Iron & Magic, when someone told him he should have approached her as a brother. He's had time to process and accept that relationship.

Since we all know Roland, I think we can agree they absolutely should not trust him. I think Dali will convince Jim. He loves her, and wants to give her what she wants. I bet they'll come to Hugh in one of the next 2 Iron & Magic books.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?
Kate was absolutely right. They need to know what they are up against. And Roland was so funny after. Such a caring father! :)

Given his reasons, I think he was right. I thought it was funny when Erra told him he shouldn't have eaten the last one. But it could have gone horribly wrong.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
The bagpipes were hilarious. I figured Kate's plan would work about like it did. Her plans always end with everyone *almost* getting killed.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?
I was surprised by that, but in retrospect I shouldn't have been. I knew this was the last book, and Kate & Curran were getting their well deserved HEA, but I thought they would work things out with him. Kate was scared, and reacted to save Julie's life. Julie is very wise & perceptive, so I wasn't surprised by her perspective.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
I know they are planning a Roman book, which I can't wait for. I would also like to see a book about Beau.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?
Every moment that Conlan was on the page, he stole the show! I think Kate & Curran will have their hands full raising him to be a decent human being who doesn't let power go to his head.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Discussion Questions - Day 1
Prologue - Chapter 5

1. What do you think of the authors' choice to start with Conlan's birth and then jump forward thirteen months?

I think it was the right choice. First, we see that Roland did tried to get the kid as soon as he was born and what all factions of Atlanta did to protect it. Roland had to regroup and try again later. Plus, toddlers allow for more things to happen than a small baby,

2. To me the opening prologue really showcases how far Kate has come from the loner mercenary in the first book. What impressed you most about it?
That she now has people she trusts enough. That she's no longer alone. That she cares enough to open up. The chances that she turns into her father are slimer that way.

3. Do you think Roland is behind the massacre at Serenbe either directly or indirectly? Any early guesses about who the culprit may be?
Roland likes spectacles and that for the whole world to know who did it. To be feared and loved. That doesn't look like his style at all.

4. After everything Nick has said and done, Kate still goes to defend him. What did you think of her handling of the Order members? Nick holding Conlan on his lap?
The evil you know is always best. She needed to cause an impression. Handing you baby to someone does that. Specially being someone on her position.

5. Conlan is so adorable! What is your favorite Conlan moment so far?
Since I read the book a month ago, they all pretty much mix up by now.

6. The wrap up or characters is already beginning. Are you surprised that Ascanio is leaving Cutting Edge or that Raphael comes to speak for him
Nope. I was expecting it since he appeared on Hugh's castle back in Iron and Magic. He dealt with it better than his alpha. Raphael had to be crazy not to want him.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments DQ’s Day 2 Chapter 6-10

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?
I read anything Kate related a few years ago. I remember Yu Fong from Jim & Dali's novella, and later on Magic Tests with Julie. I really like him the first time, and was surprised but happy that he is around this time too.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?
I guess we'll have to wait and see. Something is fishy here.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?
I already know this point, so, no answer for me.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?
Well, Jim's actions in last books made me think badly of him. So. My guess is, yes, the Pack can be trusted, as long as it doesn't hurt the pack's best interests.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?
Colan's adventures? Oh yeah. That would be cute.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments DQ’s Day 3 Chapter 11-14

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?

Not a breakdown, just protecting the other. Karen knows Curran would do something stupid and hero like to protect her (like eating animal gods) and Curran knows Kate will never agree with the stupid plan because she knows gods can't survive to tech waves. So yeah, protecting each other.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
I sure hope they do. Because this seems too big to fignt on their own.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it? He's a shapeshifter that has magic. Plus, he would have to be an extremely bright 13 months old to understand that mommy was in a killing spree, instead of focus on her bright light.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
Weeeeeell... I'm still pouting because the author is making me like the gut on his book. So yeah, I'm still recovering from the emotional inner fight causeb by Iron and Magic, and I was expecting him to be here. Actually, I was already grumbling about what took him so long to arrive.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
She's a teenager. And she's growing into her adult self. That she's able to keep things from Kate shows the effort Kate does to respect her boundaries and her free will.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?

I like them both. Sometimes I miss the previous banter, but then they do something like this and I melt into a puddle of goo.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Day 4 DQs

19. "He isn't trying to win your forgiveness. He is here to atone, because it's the right thing to do" Do you believe Hugh's motive's for coming to help Kate? Were Andrea and Raphael right to keep from Kate from knowing where Hugh was given their history?

Well, he did swear that Roland would never get his hands on Kate's kid. There's also a clear gap between the events on Iron and Magic and this one, so Hugh and Elara probably knew what would happen to the world if they didn't help.

20. "You barged into the house of the closest person I have to a sister and you interrupted my breakfast" Hugh to Dali about kate (and his breakfast) What do you think of this statement
It shows how he changed from being Roland's attack dog. The difference between the Hugh from previous books is staggering.

It will all depends on what Jim will treasure the most, keep Dali from harm and pain or keep Dali happy.

22. What did you think of Neig's realm? Was Kate right to accept the invitation to visit it?What did you think of Roland making a blood ward so he could scream at Kate uninterrupted ?
I don't know if it was the right thing to do. But it was susch a Kate move. That blood ward and screaming may be the most father-daughter interaction I ever see them have.

The authors promised us a Kate and Curran HEA, they didn't say it would be easy to read. It had to be epic, as in a what-the-hell-were-you-thinking epic kind of way.

24. What did you think of the battle and the use of the bagpipes to make the yeddimur go crazy? What did you think of Kate's plan to get kill the dragon? Did you expect t to work the way it did?
Not really, no. But it was a cool move.

25. Did you expect Roland to betray Kate in the end and what did you think of her solution with the anchor? What did you think about what Kate did to Julie and were you surprised at her perspective about it in the epilogue?Yes. That was expected. The classic Roland move. I was expecting she would trap him somewhere eventually, because destroying him wouldn't work, and this was a very nice solution. I was not expecting Julie to leave. But is her way to protect Kate from her own guilt. And do something by herself. She would be always Kate's kid if she stayed.

26. This is purportedly the last book in the Kate Daniels series however we know there is at least two more books about Hugh and Elara to come. Are there any other characters you would like to see spin off novellas and /or series about?
Julie, of course. And there are rumours about a Roman series.

27. Last but not least, to continue the trend. What was your favourite Conlan moment in this section? Your favourite Conlan moment of the book? Also given what Conlan can do at 13 month, do you think the world should be somewhat terrified at what he might be able to do when he is older?
My favorite moment is when he does blood claws and then runs to Kate saying "bad". The way Kate tells him yes, bad. Daddy is killing him. The way she finally embraces that they are a family of monsters, but she can decide what type of monster to be. That's a lesson I'm hopinh Conlan learns fast because that kid is scary powerful.

I think he will be a new surprise asset for him. I don’t remember him either.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?
I’m curious if there is something bad going on with Roland and the lines were crossed, or else if he is still setting them up somehow.

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?
I think they are still in for more surprises with that one, but not sure since I read ahead before answering on spoilers.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?
I think the pack can be trusted although they are a little more self serving. I think Jim is a little jealous of Curran in ways.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?
Yes, more the better!

12. In this section, we are reminded of how strong both Kate and Curran are willing to protect their family. Kate is willing to die if she has to kill her father and Curran is killing gods to gain power. Do you think they are having a breakdown in communication by not sharing these things with each other?
Not really, I think there relationship is strong enough to last and that they trust each other to handle things.

13. We find out that the box delivered to Kate, Serenbe, and Yu Fong are all connected to Neig, a dragon! Do you think this is going to disrupt current alliances; will everyone want to fight something so big and unknown?
I think they can handle whatever is coming to them and especially Curran and Kate have confidence. I think it’s so cool dragons have been added into the story.

14. Kate kills almost all of the Sahanu and when she turns around she sees that Conlan watched her do all that killing. She is so concerned abouth that, but Conlan still reaches for her and calls her shiny. Are you worried for Conlan and how this life might impact him? Or will he just roll with it?
I would be worried but I think with his parents he will have enough morals instilled in him.

15. Wow, surprise, Hugh is here! What have you thought about Hugh in previous books? Does Christopher's thoughts about Hughs' empathetic side and his blood bond with Roland change your feelings toward Hugh?
I always thought he was interesting and I’m liking the changes in the character. Look forward to his other books in his new series.

16. Why do you think Julie is keeping so much from Kate?
I think she’s at that age where she wants more independence and not to be overshadowed.

17. I love the playful times between Kate and Curran, banter is always great:

"admit what?
He pointed to himself.
"All this is too much for you".
I rolled my eyes.

Do you miss the tension they had before they were together or do you prefer this loving partnership?
Both were fun but I like the loving partnership more now that it’s been established.

18. In keeping with the previous sets of questions, what is your favorite Conlan scene for this section of the book?
When Conlan challenged another shapeshifter (Roger???) at the office in lion form. So cute!! And wearing the bowl on his head when eating the chicken wing.

7. I really do not remember Yu Fong. I also haven’t read all of the novellas so that may be why. Yu Fong is part dragon and was fighting something in the sky. Any ideas? Do you think he will play an important role later in the book?

I don’t remember Yu Fong either, but generally when a good dragon shows up, there is a baddie in the sky that needs an opponent.

8. So, Roland did not answer Kate’s communication. Someone did right before magic came back up. Who do you think he is? Will he offer useful information? Is he responsible for Serenbe?

Not sure yet. Im surprised someone could break in on a direct call ;)

9. Luther has a working theory on how the humans are changed. Since it hasn’t gotten to the zombie apocalypse stage yet, is someone able to contain it and waiting for the right time to release the cotangent or is it not as contagious as they think?

The way they’ve been rather csually handling the bodies, I don’t think it is as contagious as they think.

10. Avag Barsamian went into the Keep for two hours!!! The next day Robert offered an alliance. Should the Pack be trusted? Is the Pack going to stand by their alliance or abstain from fighting?

I think he offered them something, but the pack wouldn’t turn on Curran, and I doubt Roland would try something that overt. He is probably trying to develop assets.

11. I love Conlan!!!! Wouldn’t it be great if there were short stories in the author’s newsletter with Conlan’s adventures?! What is your favorite scene with Conlan in this segment of the book?

That would be a fun way to stay up to date with Kate and Curran too.
