E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments When we are good to go I will post a detailed list of who is reading whom. So far I have heard from 8 of 10 that they are not seeing any clashes. I don't really want to set the round running and then hand over to Warren only for him to find there are unresolved clashes.

Hopefully, the others will check in very soon.. though if we hit 9 positive responses I'll probably risk it ;)

Please remember the commitment you are making to your fellow group members. If you pull out after the start date for any reason it is the other members who will be faced with the problem of finding a replacement, or missing out on reads/reviews, through no fault of their own. Please don’t ask the moderators to chase after replacements as we just don’t have the time.

It is the responsibility of the author to get their book to their readers in a format the reviewer can manage. Everyone must be able to provide and accept PDF. You may buy or borrow the books you are due to read if you wish, and I’m sure the author will appreciate the verified review, but IT IS NOT COMPULSORY. There are no set dates for the start of each round. You can each work at your own pace, within the limits of the round deadlines.

All reviews must be posted to GR. We also encourage members to post on Amazon. When you have posted your reviews, please post the links to each of your reviews, not the book page in this thread.
The mod of each round will record whether members have posted reviews on Amazon and for the good of all, members who persistently fail to post reviews or DNF reviews to Amazon, will find mods less than willing to add them to subsequent groups.

Postings to other sites are by agreement by both author and reviewer.

If I’ve missed something that results in you being asked to review someone who has already reviewed you, please let me know asap.

To exchange book files, my advice is to use PM to give email addresses to each other (save the chance of spammers getting your addies from this open forum). Happy reviewing, everyone :)

Please consider downloading one of my books and/or one of the round mod’s books as a thank you for all the hard work we put in for the group.

E.M. Swift-Hook | 3487 comments Please read this especially if you are new to these review rounds.

Quick 'start-up' summary for anyone new who might be scratching their heads. You should PM the four people who will be reviewing you through their Goodreads author pages. Click on the down arrow beside the 'Follow Author' button under their picture and it opens a menu which will allow you to message them.

Ask what kind of file they would like or say you can only offer PDF, though unless a publisher uploaded it for you, you can always download a .mobi of your own book from Amazon.

Don't forget to ask where to send it so they can give you their email.

The four people who you are reviewing should be in touch with you in a similar way.

You can, of course, choose to buy any or all of the books instead, or read the books on KU, if you are a subscriber and the books are available there.

Please make sure you have exchanged ALL FOUR books - or have been assured by your reviewers they will buy your book or read it through KU - as soon as possible. Some people read fast and it can be very frustrating to have to wait a long time to get hold of a book you are committed to review.

Finally, recent changes on Amazon mean that we are now asking you to post your review to your own Amazon store and any others you might have access to as well.

I shall now hand you over to the excellent Warren Dean who will be the Mod for this round!

Happy reading!

Warren Dean | 321 comments Thanks, E.M. If anyone needs help, has questions or problems, don't hesitate to post on the thread or PM me.

Also for those new to the process, please don't forget to post the links to your reviews. It makes it easier for me to keep score and it is also nice for group members to follow the reviews as they come out.

Happy reading.

John | 37 comments A note to my reviewers: some people are reporting a noticable number of errors in my manuscript. I would ask that you NOT take it easy on me and note this if it becomes glaringly obvious. I would have thought 4k in professional editing services would have caught that. I will bear the lower scores, don't spare my feelings.

You might want to try running it through the free version of grammarly. It won't catch everything, and you'd have to have a decent grasp of punctuation (instead of just passing knowledge otherwise it'll just end up confusing you on sentences that are defined by their punctuation) but it might find a couple extra things.
Another thing you could try is a proof reading group. It won't be professional, but it would be an extra pair of eyes looking for the obvious typos and whatnot. I'm trying to get one set up here-https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
On a final note, I'd be very careful with the editing services you contract. I've heard from a true professional (someone apart of the the Big Five companies) in a blog that a lot of the "professional" editors out there are just garbage, and will actually hurt the book. This has been my (admittedly secondhand) experience as well. Of the three author I know (counting you) who had professional editing, the only one with no typos was the one who went through a small publishing company. I feel like there has to be a resource out there for something like this. Maybe try a quick search?
I don't know if any of this will prove helpful, but I hope it does. :)

Thank you for the advice. Honestly this is just embarrassing. My friend's finding all sorts of minor errors that the editor never caught. This is even after I read it over a few times after.

message 67: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette | 180 comments I've seen typos even in the Big 5 publishers books, more often than you'd think. From my experience, it takes lots of different eyes and several read-throughs to catch them (and even then some can slip through). At least as an Indie they are relatively easy to fix if readers/reviewers are kind enough to let you know where to find them. The other things is that different English speaking countries have different spelling and grammar conventions - eg US vs Canadian vs Uk vs Australian.

First out of the blocks Tristen!

As an aside, would you able to post the review on Amazon.uk as well? It isn't compulsory but it is nice for a book to get a boost there too.

A trick I find works quite well (and doesn't cost anything) is to convert your manuscript to a different format and then read it again. So, for example, I write and edit in word, then when I think I'm finished, I convert the manuscript into a mobi file and read it on my kindle. You will be surprised by how the glitches pop out at you.

Yes, that's true. Changing font or colour background can help too - or reading it out loud. Some even suggest reading it backwards (can't imagine doing that for 100,000 plus words) or using a ruler under the lines of text. And different readers. Still can be surprising what can slip through.

Thanks, Scott Appreciate the honest review and glad you liked some of the stories :)

(Just as an aside, none of the stories are deleted scenes from Akrad's Children or even occur in the same time frame, though a guess a few do have the same characters - e.g a much younger Rokkan or Anna. )
