Anni | 5066 comments Damn... I went to your profile to have a look at the cover and every step took forever to load, only to come back and realize you already linked the book here :D

I have difficulties picturing a son of them in my head, but I see your point. Aaaaand I really, really like the cover :)

Haha!
The cover of book two looks even more like Oberyn in my opinion: The Crimson Campaign (Powder Mage, #2) by Brian McClellan
It's probably the hair in combination with a rifle that looks a bit like a spear.
Yeah, the covers are nice and so far I'm also liking the book :)

Bea | 2050 comments Finally updated my tracker and added BR-dates for Thunderhead and Holy Sister. I haven't started either of the series, but just in case I like them enough.

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8716 comments Ooh you want to join Thunderhead! I could be wrong, but I think the lovely Anni wants to read Scythe... :D

Oh really? That would be great, I'll ask her :)
I have Scythe lying around here and would like to read it in the nearer future.

message 111: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments It's been over a year since I've written anything here??!

Anyway, finally updated my BR posts. I don't have a lot of 2020 Buddy Reads planned so far since they have been stressing me out a bit last year. But we'll see :)

Virginie | 6124 comments Woohoo! To celebrate the revival of this thread, my gift to you is...

A ZOMBIE DINOSAUR!

message 114: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments Hehehe, what's dead can never die! 👻

Thanks for the zombies!

Funfact, I've watched the original Jurassic Park movie this week for the first time in my entire life (can you believe it?) So that dinosaur is perfect 😃

message 115: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments Oooh, did you like it? I think it holds up pretty well, despite being from 1993.

I watch it every year a bit before Christmas, when I'm tired from gift hunting. I don't like shopping when there's a crowd, so I'm usually fed up with people. I cheer for the dinosaurs, and whoop when someone gets eaten xD

I did! It was a lot of fun. I believe we even have the book somewhere in the attic, I should search for it.🦖

Yeah, I'm not a fan of crowds either, they give me anxiety. Shopping can be fun, but not when there are lots of people.
There is something morbidly enjoyable about watching people die in movies (this sounds like I'm such a creepy person, haha). Probably also one of the reasons why people enjoy watching Kill counts on YT (I do, also I'm a bit of a wimp so I don't watch horror movies that often 😏)

message 117: by Virginie (new)

Virginie | 6124 comments I'm also a wimp, I almost never watch horror movies either. But when I do, I laugh when someone dies, and hide behind a pillow the rest of the time xD

Bea | 2050 comments One of the best (but also most frustrating) things is when people in movies make incredibly stupid decisions. Weird scary noises coming out of the basement? Yeah, I'm gonna walk down alone without a light xD

I think the biggest (actual) jumpscare I ever had was when I was watching a horror let's play with headphones on (don't ask me why I did that to myself) and didn't notice that my cat came into my room. Then all of a sudden she jumped into my lap out of nowhere! I almost had a heart attack! xD

Haha, right! I'm always urging the characters to "at least take a flamethrower" and that, since "your friend is already getting eaten, there's no saving him now so you might as well use his demise as a distraction to make your escape" xD

Bea | 2050 comments So, since I'm weird and apparently don't know what to do with myself Iain started it on another thread, I just compared my ratings to Mayim's and Petrik's. In general I don't think ratings say all that much about a person's opinion of a book, but it was still fun.

So:

Mayim:
Books both Mayim and me have rated 1 or 2 stars: 5
Books M rated 1 or 2 stars and I 4 or 5: 5
Books M rated 4 or 5 stars and I 1 or 2: 6
Books we both rated 4 or 5 stars: 48
Overlap according to GR: 78%

So our ratings don't seem to diverge that much but we also share less bad ratings than I thought, but apparently a lot of favorires, which is great!

I should also mention that Mayim has rated about twice as many books as I did, so the comparison is not perfect.

Petrik:
Books both Petrik and I rated 1 or 2 stars: 1
Books P rated 1 or 2 that I rated 4 or 5: 1
Books P rated 4 or 5 that I rated 1 or 2: 10
Books we both rated 4 or 5: 40
Overlap percentage according to GR: 75%

Our number of ratings is more comparable (he has rated 404 books, I 384).
So, long story short, when in doubt, I should listen to Mayim 😂

Hahaha I love that you did this comparison! XD

message 122: by Barry (new)

Barry (boprawira) | 1212 comments I think Petrik rates too many books on the 4-5 star rating lol. But, more likely than not, I'd end up enjoying the books too. Although, it is also likely that I may not enjoy it as much as he does.

But, his glowing reviews have influenced me to finish a couple of series that I had abandoned. Three Body Problem and the first of Red Rising trilogies come to mind. And because he reads so much more than I do, it's good to have reference for future reading plans.

I haven't done any more detailed analysis like you did with Petrik or with any other people, though. It'll be interesting to see ... maybe I'll do it later this week lol.

message 123: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments Well, I'm also stingy with the 5 stars and I don't give 4 stars that easily either. A lot of books are just ok to me
Also, it's questionable how much a star rating really tells about a person's opinion about a book. For me, 4 stars means that a book was really good and/or enjoyable with only minor flaws but just not as memorable or impactful as a five-star book . Some people might still give 4 stars even though they didn't really like the book that much.

This is just for fun anyway, I've picked up books based on Petrik's recommendation that I loved :)
