SBC, I read your summary and a few others online about A Different Kingdom and I am about 50/50. I think think the setting was up state NY and not Ireland. BUT...the characters do sound familiar. Will look into it a little more. Thank you!!

Kind of sounds like Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist? I just finished reading it last month and I think it took place in upstate NY. It had twin boys, though, not one boy. It did have a faerie mound in it, though, that was in the woods just behind their house.
