Books shelved BOTH neurodiversity OR neurodiverse and dystopian:Brave New World
The Handmaid's Tale (I don't know why this would be neurodiverse!)
Sorry to have been mostly absent this entire month, but it was virtually impossible for me to type with a broken index finger. I've finally gotten a reprieve from wearing the splint 24 hours a day, and only have to wear it at night, while sleeping. I will be reading Fairest, book 3.5 in The Lunar Chronicles, which is a 'bridge' book between Cress and Winter. If I can I will also squeeze in The Power.
Ow, Linda! Your poor finger! I hope it comes right quickly - I’m sure the cast manages to get in the way wherever you turn :( I’ve read all of the principal Lunar Chronicles books in the last month - just finished ‘Winter’ yesterday. I enjoyed them a lot, especially ‘Cinder’ (probably because the ideas and personalities were fresh, though I also think the writing had a slightly more mature tone than in the others). They’re good fun, and I like the twists on the fairy tales. Will be interested to hear what you think about ‘Fairest’. I’ve done my dash for the time being but will come back to the .5 books if they are good enough.
I got Red Clocks in at the library today! Perfect timing! I am trying to finish The House of the Spirits for MR and then I will be diving into Red Clocks!
Also, my book club meets tomorrow night to discuss The Power. I finished it a few days ago—5 stars and a favorite!—but am waiting to write my review until after my meeting. I am hoping that discussion with brilliant women will help me work through my thoughts...because I have a lot of thoughts. lol
I just found out about An Ocean of Minutes by Thea Lim.. due out July 10.. Real Simple magazine says it's a dystopia, but it also has time travel, but what it's really about is more universal stuff like relationships.
I just read Oryx and Crake in June! I honestly dont think I own any dystopian that I havent read, July is going to be as bad as last month it looks like.
Hannah wrote: "I just read Oryx and Crake in June! I honestly dont think I own any dystopian that I havent read, July is going to be as bad as last month it looks like."Hannah, you could continue onto the next Oryx and Crake book (if you liked it)—The Year of the Flood

Yeah someone said it was but I really don't see how it is ether. I'll probably finish it before the end of June anyway. I have Cloud Atlas though and I'm really looking forward to it!
July challenge posted! Yay, thank you. Will there be a thread for those seeking buddies to read with?

Critterbee, check out the Decathlon Announcement thread at: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
There is some discussion there of what people are interested in reading and I have a feeling that you might start seeing some threads dedicated to specific books pop up in the Footnotes folder as at least two people decide on a book (I just posted one for Red Clocks)—you can jump in on any of those as well!
Susie, is Illuminae dystopian? It is tagged that way, but is also tagged fantasy and science fiction, and it looks like it takes place in space. Jen, I think you read it to. What do you think knowing that I like to interpret the tags pretty narrowly?
Nicole R wrote: "Susie, is Illuminae dystopian? If it was set on Earth, I might see wiggle room for dystopian, like Asimov's Caves of Steel, but even that for me is sci-fi.

I probably wouldn’t have tagged “Illuminae” as dystopian though there are definitely some dystopian themes (which I probably can’t explain without spoilers). So it works. But more immediately obvious tags are sci fi, YA, illustrated.
I’m with Kate. Dystopia isn’t the central theme, but it leans in that direction so it would pass for me.
I just joined Play Book Tag today and I was very excited to see that July's theme is dystopian. Dystopian is my favorite "genre" of books by far. I went to the library yesterday, looking specifically for a dystopian novel. I ended up picking up Artemis not even knowing that it would fit the theme! I can't wait to try out the group and see if I enjoy it!
Nicole R-I think that is what Ill end up doing. Or I do have The Girl With All the Gifts on my list but I thought that was a horror book, do you all think it fits this tag?

I enjoyed Artemis well enough, I think because I tried to read it on it's own merits, not as another book by the author of the Martian.

Excited to see your review and hope you will feel free to ask questions along the way if you need any assistance orienting yourself to the group.
Hey everybody, i am new in this group and already very excited to be here. I am thinking of reading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, it has been on my tbr for some time. Can't wait for it to arrive to my local library! Happy readings to all of you. :)
annapi wrote: "Welcome, Anni! Always good to have newcomers be active right away!"Thank you! I was lucky enough to have some books that fit the next moths tag so i didn't have to think too much about it.

Sweet! I have been wanting finish the Darkest Minds series! I will be reading book #3 In The Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken
If anyone wants to read some old-style dystopian/post-apocalyptic, Alas, Babylon (kindle edition) is on sale for 1.99. I read it years ago.I'm reading The Power now, and probably New York 2140 and The Lathe of Heaven later in the month.
I guess I had my heart set on Neurodiversity. I had a lovely list I wanted to read. As far as dystopia is concerned, I feel like I've read a lot of that in the past few years and some have been quite good but its still not my favorite tag. I'm planning on finishing up The Passage series with The City of Mirrorss. I'm also looking at The Age of Miracles and Red Rising as possibilities.
Is anyone else finding that a lot of books that are tagged dystopian aren't? It seems as though a lot of people tag post-apocalyptic as dystopia even when there aren't any dystopian elements. Several of the books I had been looking at turned out to just be post-apocalyptic, but I think I finally found a good one: The Wikkeling. When the first few pages of a dystopian novel make you chuckle, that's something worth giving another look.
Hi all - I think my new book fits into this month's theme quite well and is a fitting read for the 4th of July. A near-future direct democracy where everything is determined using an app:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
I'm new to goodreads, so I'd greatly appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!
Shane
I randomly picked up Red Clocks from my library's new shelf the other day without even knowing this month's tag, so I will definitely be reading that.I see no one has recommended it yet, but I highly suggest you read We. This is the novel that inspired Orwell to write 1984. It's a must read for those who want to understand the genre.
Okay, it's official. I'm finally going to read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin for this as many consider it one of the original dystopian novels. According to the back cover it was the inspiration for 1984.

I might reread it again its been a few years.

I have not read We but I liked 1984. Of course this was the first book i had read even remotely similar and made me think and aware about things id bever considered. Being a great read.....no but for me it was an eye opening book and so that always stays with you.

Sara, there are a bunch of us reading this, so check out our buddy read thread! It is spoiler free at the moment, so you won't stumble across anything that will ruin the book for you.
