Loved the movie!
I am awfully sorry for coming in so late on this thread - both The Queen of Katwe and Victoria are acceptable candidates. I'll make a poll this instant...
A Walk to Remember we did last December. Freely check this thread: A Walk to Remember - book and movie.

Considering this is a nominations thread for any book, for any genre, maybe it would be a good idea to mention all those books that have lost in our polls this year. We didn't have many. It'll be easier to set the poll :) Here are they:
Alive
Das Boot
The Children of Men
Le Fantôme de l'Opéra
Fingersmith
Into Thin Air
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Queen of Katwe
If you have any other suggestion for the poll, please tell us! (the sooner the better)

Good list! I've seen and read all of them except Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, which I happen to have in a TBR stack. And I can recommend all of the others.

Thank you Janice! I agree, each book sounds great. You at least will know which book to pick in the poll ;)

Well drat. I was out of state visiting my mom for the last couple weeks and missed the poll entirely... not that it would have mattered, since it looks like I would have been the only vote for Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors anyway : )

Don't worry, it'll show up on our bookshelf eventually :)

December 2019
It's time to pick another random book this year :) I might continue the tradition set last year (see few posts above) and mention books that were close runners this year, to give them another chance (they will have it again, don't worry, but now one might get it sooner):
Before I Fall
Crazy Rich Asians
Doctor Sleep
Lonesome Dove
Postcards from the Edge
The Professor and the Madman
Strangers on a Train
The Terror
The Wizard of Oz
Remember, random choice here means that the book does not have to be a (non-)fiction that was adapted to screen. It can be a tie-in, a book that was written as a companion book for a documentary or a movie, like David Attenborough and Michael Palin's books, and all those making-of-the-movie books. It goes without saying that genre in this section does not matter :)

I have seen the movie (at local library) but have not read the book yet.
BTW: Judi Dench plays Victoria for the 2nd time; the first was in "Mrs. Brown". Maybe i should check to see if THAT movie was based on a book!

Ohh this one sounds really good, the movie was great! Sad, mind you, really sad, but non-the-less a brilliant study of people.

I think we now have even too many books to vote for, so I'll put the poll up earlier than usual:
Book of December 2019
Book of December 2019
January 2020
I thought about waiting for the results of this month's genre poll, but then it occurred to me we should give another chance to some books from the last poll that the most of you voted for (in addition to Doctor Sleep). I'll add four of them:
Lonesome Dove
The Professor and the Madman
Strangers on a Train
The Wizard of Oz
If you would like to read something else, please share your suggestions!

I have been dying to read the Expanse series
Leviathan Wakes
And one choice that is going to have haters for sure, the rewriting of Twilight, for its tenth anniversary Twilight Tenth Anniversary - Life and Death - Stephenie Meyer. Couldn't find it here, but it was free to download from her page not long ago.
Both could be nominated for Fantasy Science Fiction if you all rather continue with some of the random pre-selected books :P
I have Doctor Sleep pending for December and I'm planning to re read the Shining too.
Lorena wrote: "So glad to hear you had a good time on vacation! Which forest did you go trekking in? We are thinking of renting a cabin near a wild life reservoir (Pan de Azucar in Uruguay) with our dogs..."
That sounds awesome! We were in Madagascar, in a couple of their national parks and nature reserves. I wish we had more time to explore more, because each park is so unique and special, but the island was just too big and road navigation between villages strenuous if not non-existent.
Leviathan Wakes sounds awesome, I love the show!
For Twilight, do you mean the book, or this fan-fiction? If that rewrite isn't on GR, we can't add it to our bookshelf (not that we wouldn't want to, but if there's no book, how to add it to the group?). We can open a discussion thread for it though, in our Members Corner :)

I love the Expanse too! Can't wait for Season 04.
I found it!
Twilight / Life and Death
I was trying to find it as a stand alone but it was compiled together with Twilight, so the title wasn't popping up. It[s a re imagining of Twilight with gender reversal and many, emphasis on MANY, corrections of things that critics have complained about in Twilight. Like, scenes that had choppy dialogue or felt disconnected, things like that.

Deborah wrote: "In the spirit of the holidays, I nominate "The Christmas Shoes" for reading, even though it's for January."

Both books may be added to the poll. I would only suggest to add now only Twilight to the list, because we should read that one first (I did read it, but our club didn't). This re-imagining of the book might be a bonus read and discussion, for those who wish to read it? What do you think?

November 2020
There are so many books that didn't get the chance to get on our bookshelf. Now you have another opportunity to nominate them :) Of course, you don't have to, you can add new suggestions, or pick one from the huge pile at the beginning of this long thread.

Oh this sounds very interesting! I honestly didn't know for that movie and book, thank you for sharing!

I'll nominate some books that you voted for this year. I'll list only those with more than seven votes in each poll, because there are too many:
Blood of Elves
The Call of the Wild
A Discovery of Witches
High Fidelity
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Ready Player One
The Stand

I came home from my mini-vacation last night. Yesterday afternoon we passed through and visited a memorial center of Nikola Tesla in his birthtown, Smiljan. That inspired me to suggest to you something different for our monthly read (and in line with our random choice criteria): Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla: Biography of a Genius by Marc J. Seifer.
This book may be on our bookshelf, but as there is no direct tie-in to it, you would be free to read any other Tesla's biography (or his own autobiography if you wish!) and watch any documentary or fiction movie about him. As I recall, there are a couple of recent movies done about him, so it should be entertaining and educational as well.

Another book that should merit our attention this month:
A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough

I'd like to hear if you have any other nominations to suggest. The poll will be put up this weekend, to ensure we have enough time to vote for our selections.
OK, the poll is up:
Book of November 2020
As there were too many books on the list, I slimmed the choices down to the books that had at least 10 votes in their favor, and to those new ones mentioned above.

To be honest, it was very close call, because without my vote there would've been a tie between this one and Blood of Elves.

Time again to pick any book we like, disregarding the genre. We can nominate the book we voted for in the previous months, or choose the book that otherwise wouldn't be selected, because it doesn't fit in any category like those media tie-ins.
There weren't many polls this year. The only books that really stood out with their number of votes were NOS4A2 and The Lady Vanishes. Would you rather like to read something else? Freely share your suggestions!

I think I saw this movie years ago. I had no idea the poor boy existed. This would be very interesting book to read. Thanks for the nomination!

it was produced as a movie by the Hallmark channel.
available, most likely, at public library and streaming (Tubi).
Don't have time to read - borrow the Playaway (probably available at library too).

I have not been active for quite a while so hope ok to pop in. This is not a nomination, but this topic had me thinking as I received an email about historical fiction, too and all of a sudden I thought of Summer of My German Soldier (as it is Summer now). I definitely read it and seemed to remember watching it but Googled to make sure. Was a TV movie. Anyone else remember the TV movie? I am a huge fan of WWII books, fiction and non-fiction. The 1970s - 80s had many great mini series based on novels.

I might have seen the movie long time ago, but it's hard to tell, as the story is familiar, it could have been some other one. I'll put it up for nomination, sounds interesting :)
There are so many good WW2 movies and TV series. I like especially poorly known real-life stories, like Memphis Belle, The Tuskegee Airmen, Land Girls, Hacksaw Ridge, The Imitation Game etc.

One of my fav novel to mini series was The Winds of War …back when mini series were big on Network TV. The Thorn Birds was also excellent. Golden Age Hollywood Stars in lavish TV productions. Robert Mitchum and Barbara Stanwyck to name 2.

Here we are again with our random choices! The suggestions may come from any genre, and they do not have to be new - just take a look at our long list at the beginning of this thread :)
Considering the ongoing climate change summit and discussions, maybe we might read A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough.
Of course, if you've already read this or simply would like to read something else, freely share your ideas!
