Nelwyn MacNulty | 2 comments A children's book from the general library Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Read 1975-1980. A boy is on a search in an alternate/magical world. There is an orange/golden cat. There are several golden magical items and it is implied that the cat is magical because is ate the magical golden fish. He meets a girl. At the end of the book, back in the real world he gets a step-sister who looks like/is the girl from the magic world.

Kelly (khek) | 270 comments I sounds like a not-quite-clear memory of The Lives of Christopher Chant, by Diana Wynne Jones.

Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 297 comments This does sound similar to The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones, except for the part about the cat being magical because it ate magical golden fish....that's not in the Chrestomanci books.

Nelwyn, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

message 7: by Nelwyn (new)

Nelwyn MacNulty | 2 comments Found it! Via Meg Rutherford the illustrator for the sequel. Victoria Walker - The Winter of Enchantment, and sequel The House called Hadlows. The objects were not all golden and the cat did eat the fish, but it was silver.
