I asked Sonia to clarify. I could be misinterpreting -- its happened before and I'm sure it'll happen again. My interpretation was once someone was knocked off their broom they couldn't continue to read for Chains but could read for the Quaffle if needed. Once they were back on their broom, they were then free to continue on with their book.
I honestly can't tell you anymore haha.
We'll just see what Sonia says and we'll all be experts by the time the next match rolls around ;-)
As I mentioned before, it was a game that needed to be played to see where clarifications needed, so mistakes and misinterpretations were bound to happen one way or another. Someone had to make them so they could become obvious and clarified for later on :-)

My understanding was that as long as the quaffle is intact, chaser chains can score. If a chaser is knocked out by a beater, they can score on that chain after being read back in. I did not understand anything regarding that the chaser has to stop reading.
I have not seen any discussion about whether the beater has to beat the chaser. In this case, Jenny finished, then Jen. Jen needed to be read back in anyway in order to read for another chain which I did. The quaffle is still intact.
Are you saying that once the attacking beater hits the chaser, the chaser is not allowed to read that until being read back in? That was never stated or made clear before, just that they couldn't score. I can't read the captains threads that discussed this issue, but the your post from Sonia does not make that clear. It only reads that the beater has to read the person back in before a goal.

But. . . I was so tired by that point that I'm now just glad I finished it. (I loved it, but reading it so fast. . . Oy!)

It is. And then with each change of rules, new scenarios pop up that need to be addressed. Its neverending. lol!

I guess for me that poses the question of why would a Beater ever attack, if the Chaser is free to just keep reading even if they've been knocked out?

It really was a good book!
From my experience....
Has the Gryff keeper broken the quaffle?
If yes, then the goal is defo invalid, and it doesn’t matter for quidditch if the chaser finishes the book or not.the beater has to finish to read her back in though.
If no, then if the defending Beater announced completion before you shot the goal, it is valid.

Ah but that also begs the question of why attack at all if the chain cannot be broken by it. Because that's what we initially thought a beater attack would do.
Eta: I mean, if the chain cannot be permanently broken by it.

Haha! And you just know, even after all this, round 2 will find even more scenarios to confound. :O

That YOU would do it for fun is clear ;-)))

The Beater would still attack because no one knows if the QUAFFLE will be broken in time or not.
Here are some scenarios to keep in mind for the next round - these are just my thoughts, not arguments or justifications:
1. If the QUAFFLE is broken before the Seekers have finished their books: no score - Chasers and Beaters attempts are all null.
2. If the QUAFFLE is broken after a Beater knocks out a player but before that player is read back in: no score and that resets the game.
3. If the QUAFFLE is not broken yet, but an attempt to break the QUAFFLE has been announced, and a Beater from the opposing team has finished before the Chaser or the rescuing Beater can read the Chaser back in: it makes sense that the Chaser should stop reading until rescued, but how does the Chaser know in "real time"? When I'm reading (as a Chaser), I check after every section or so that I read, but the timing is never going to be exact.
4. If the QUAFFLE is not broken, and no attempt to break the QUAFFLE has been announced, and a Beater from the opposing team has finished before the Chaser and before the rescuing Beater can read the Chaser back in: no score until the Chaser is read back in whether or not their book is finished - the only consequence is when the score can be posted and when another chain can be announced and played. It really doesn't matter if the Chaser kept reading or stopped.

Me: Uhmmm.... quidditch is tricky... I'll need to check with Tea how they did it in AMMP to make sure we're original enough.... but I think we might pull it off....
It seemed so simple on my brain...
LOL

Can't say the date, but it was either May 31st or June 1st.

You need to give us time to prepare a spreadsheet and count all info, though. Busy schedules and all *grins*

We want to know if we have to stop when they attack or keep reading.

I am now thoroughly confused. The sequence:
1st: It was announced that Slytherin Chaser Jen (me/I) was reading The Aeronaut's Windlass (751 pages) for a solo Chaser Chain.
2nd: It was announced that Gryfffindor Beater Jenny was also reading TAW to knock me out.
3rd: Gryffindor Beater Jenny finished TAW.
4th: Slytherin Beater Natalie announced that she was reading TAW to defend Slytherin Chaser Jen.
5th: Slytherin Chaser Jen finished TAW.
6th: Slytherin Beater Natalie finished TAW.
Does that help?
I thought that since I was knocked off my broom, I should have waited for my Beater (Natalie) to finish TAW before finishing myself?
???

Well, my humble opinion is to pause/wait. But, that is a bit tricky because when I'm speed reading a book, I'm not logged into goodreads... And Jen gets too focused on the task at hand...
So... I will let this one pass. With a warning. Next time, a better checking needs to be done.
There are a few things.... well, more than a few, that we the mods think are a little fishy... like 400 pages under an hour, things like that. depending on the ruling at hand, some penalties may be added too.
Stay tuned. When results come out, there will be fireworks. LOL.

Jen, that might be the order of the events, but wasn't the one announced, so, now I'm the one confused.

Will you take into account type of book/read? Is it a re-read vs. a first read? Is it War & Peace vs. Twilight? The answers to those questions would make a huge difference in # of pages read in an hour!

No. The information about Jen finishing before Natalie was included in Jen's post in our Tom Riddle Team Thread when she posted the book.

You mean the confusion in my steps 5 and 6? I DID finish the book while Natalie was still reading it. That's clear from our Tom Riddle Chaser Chain thread. (I discovered she finished it after I woke up and reloaded this thread for the 1st Match. I finished it before I went to sleep finally at 6:30a or so.)

She might get mod points for that.
Sadly, it also means the score is void.
Thank you to all the involved, and sorry it took so long.

Well, in actuality I'm a Ravenclaw. Although one of my Pottermore tests DID put me in Slytherin. (I was also briefly a Gryffindor and a Hufflepuff. Pottermore was very confused over where to sort me.)

So 100 pages in 30 minutes is still okay? It's not unheard of for me to read a 250+ book on my lunch break or my commute home.

Sure.
As someone said, it depends on the book. I consider myself an average reader, I can read up to 100 pages per hour, give or take - depending on the book, of course. So, I usually double that amount when thinking on speed readers, which goes around 200-250 pages per hour.
300 in an hour is possible IMO, but, with the right combinations... re-read, easy & fast speech, those things.

Sonia, I hate to break it to you, but you are a fast reader!
100p/hour is NOT average.
Not for the general public or the wider GR population, at least.
I grant it might be average within NBRC readers.

Ahahahah. Okay then, I'm a fast reader, that reads 50-80 books a year.
Well... now. Back on my good reading years I was around 120-140. Now, well, life happened...

We'll scrap the goal as it was a mistake.
