Going to catch up with all my thoughts for this book now. I took myself to a coffee shop without my laptop and binged through this duology but couldn't update until now. I can't say I enjoyed all of it, but they were fast-paced reads.

First quarter - (view spoiler)[The first 75 pages had me feeling pretty neutral towards this book. I didn't super love or hate it. The action scene was an intense opener but what came after was far slower in pace. The discovery of her brother wasn't a shock as it was detailed in the synopsis but I was looking forward to puzzling out the mysteries of his leaving both his family and his gods. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[This section was mainly focused on the intimate details of their day-to-day lives. Whilst I did find it interesting to learn about their culture I did also find myself a little impatient for something more. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[I don't understand Eelyn's brother's decision to stay with his enemy. His explanation was that living with them made him realise how they were alike. But if that was the case then why did he fight WITH them and AGAINST his own people in the initial battle scene?

Halvard is a gem and deserved more page time! I cared little for anyone else but I was glad to see him saved from the raiders.

I could foresee a romance between Eelyn and Fiske occurring as there were many references to him throughout, especially after how he ignored her after their time together on the lake and their saving of Halvard together. It wasn't done hastily or overtook the plot, though. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[The Riki and the Aska connected to fight their joint enemy, the Herja. Literally everything that happened here was already detailed in the synopsis. Like, I already knew the entire plot! I know this wasn't the author's fault but it ruined the whole reading experience for me. I flew through the book and was absorbed whilst reading it, but it left little overall impression on me. (hide spoiler)]

Hey Guiana, no worries :) I'm on holidays until the weekend so my check ins might be a little sporadic too but I can't wait to see your thoughts :) I always split my books into four sections based on an even division of the page count. I haven't got the book with me rn to check the chapters but I read this edition Sky in the Deep so each quarter is about 88ish pages long.

so sorry you didn't enjoy this more! (view spoiler)[I've been looking forward to this book for a long time, and now feels like a pretty good time to be reading it with how I've been trying to delve into Nordic exposure recently. the Vikings aspect of this story slips right into that. plus the idea of a badass axe-wielding female protagonist was really exciting. so far, though, I'm not enjoying this as much as I expected I would. it's too early on to really tell, but right now I don't feel much connection with the characters as the book is trying to push me to. I mean how, despite being intrigued about Iri's perspective on switching sides, I can't empathize with Eelyn on that because it hasn't given me a lot to work with. in the opening scene, which I agree with you on being intense, it felt like kind of just "oh yeah, here's the protagonist's brother. we'll just dump him on you and it's really up to you if you want to get attached to him or not" rather than making the reader feel otherwise, you know? and obviously family and clan mean a lot to these warriors but again with Mýra and her father, I can't empathize much with Eelyn on that because her emotions and relationships with those two didn't feel well-rounded before this point. I don't know, now I'm just rambling.

as much as it seems like things aren't looking up for me right now, I AM enjoying parts of the book. even, I feel like I'm going to ultimately give this a higher rating because the story aligns with the YA books I like to read. guilty, I know. but, I have hope that the story turns around the points that got me feeling impartial.

I've just read the chapter getting into the raid on Fiske's village, so I'm excited for some action-packed fun. hopefully. on Iri, I'm still so-so about the whole thing with him because the story hasn't really shown anything to make me feel attached to him as it's done with, say, Halvard. who, by the way, I absolutely adore. what a bean.

aside from the worldbuilding feeling slightly lacking, I'm enjoying this on the whole. it's an intriguing story—or maybe I'm just biased because of the whole Nordic streak I'm still on. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I'm enjoying most of this so far, but the romance is a little off for me. I agree with you that it wasn't done hastily or overtook the plot, which I am RELIEVED about, but it does feel a bit sudden. I don't mean rushed—there were obvious growing signs of the romance. I mean it felt slightly crammed because, in the short amount of time they spent together, it seems the trying-to-kill-each-other-numerously before just poofed and vanished. Eelyn mentioned a caving feeling for him she crashed down into that was buried underneath, but I didn't really get a feel of that so the intensity of it felt like a leap. I'm not against the relationship, in fact I'm for it though thankful it wasn't the center of the story, but the leap did catch me off guard. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I've just checked back to the summary and you're right, it definitely just outlined the whole book and took the fun out of it. for me, I only heard it included Vikings, an angry female lead and vengeance and I decided that yes, I definitely must read this. I was right when I mentioned it in the earlier stages of reading—I did enjoy it in the end. had a bit of a struggle with the character relationships there, but the plot and action won out. I've been anticipating to read it for long too, and the excitement leading up to it carried through during reading, so that helped the appeal. (hide spoiler)]

I'm so glad it worked better for you. I think it is a book I might revisit, despite rating it two stars as I can see the appeal of the slower story-line surrounded by intense action scenes. I think if I was in the right mood and not spoiled by the synopsis it is a story I could really have got into.
