"After Midnight", which appeared on Eric Clapton's eponymous (self-titled) debut solo album in 1970 (which also features his showpiece, "Let It Rain"), is actually a cover of a 1966 J.J. Cale song. (Cale also wrote "Cocaine", which is a hit song from Eric Clapton's 1977 album *Slowhand*.)

Thanks Jim, We'll see which of those songs manages to play in my head the rest of the day.

Jennifer | 6 comments Hey everyone! I've read 27 of the books on the list.
1984
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Anne of Green Gables
Charlotte's Web
Flowers in the Attic
The Giver
Gone Girl
The Great Gatsby
The Handmaid's Tale
Books 1-3 of the Harry Potter Books
The Help
The Hunger Games trilogy
Little Women
The Notebook
The Outsiders
Ready Player One
Things Fall Apart
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Twilight Saga
Where the Redfern Grows
I'm also currently reading Outlander. I've been reading it for awhile but it's a pretty daunting book due to it's size. I am hoping to finish it sometime this summer so I can continue with the series. I do like what I have read so far and I'm also hoping to start Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire soon so i can get to the last of those books over the summer too.

Hi Jennifer!

Based on what you've read so far, I have a feeling that you'll like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Looking for Alaska. We're reading Looking for Alaska now and we'll start A Tree Grows in Brooklyn in July.

When people were listing favorites, I suspect that when people said "Harry Potter" they meant the whole series, but when they said "Outlander," they probably meant the first book. Outlander (book 1) is very long and very satisfying on it's own, whereas the first Harry Potter is like an appetizer. (The books tend to get longer and longer as these series progress.)

Hi Nancy!
That's the way I took it too, Harry Potter-whole series, Outlander-just book one. There's 8/9 chunly books in that series 🙈🙈🙈. As I said, I like it, but it's so daunting lol. Thanks for the recommendations, I've been meaning to read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for a long time amd still haven't gotten to it 🙈🙈🙈. I want to read Looking for Alaska, but I think I'd enjoy the audiobook of it so I am going to try and get the audio cd of it sometime soon.

Julie Lewis (riobrewster) | 22 comments I gotta disagree with you Nancy. The third book in the Outlander series - Voyager - is my favorite of the series. Most Outlander fans wait with bated breath for a new book, spawning "Droughtlander" lists in between. Harry Potter, I only read the first one - although I don't have kids so I don't have that incentive to read them all.

Reading now: A Prayer for Owen Meany

I've read:
1984
Tom Sawyer
Atlas Shrugged (at least 4 times)
Catch-22
Charlotte's Web
Da Vinci Code
Foundation (all of them)
Dune (all of them)
Gone with the Wind
Handmaid's Tale (just finishing 2nd read)
The Great Gatsby
Harry Potter
Little Women
Outlander (all of them at least twice)
Pillars of the Earth (all of them)
Pride and Prejudice (all Jane Austin multiple times)
The Help
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (all of them)
The Joy Luck Club
Lord of the Rings (all of them)
Pilgrim's Progress
Grapes of Wrath
Frankenstein

Started but didn't finish:
War and Peace
The Shack
Gulliver's Travels
Great Expectations
The Godfather
Chronicles of Narnia
Catcher in the Rye

Hi Julie, I didn't mean to insult Voyager. I gave it 5 stars! Breath of Snow and Ashes = 5 too. The series isn't done yet in any event. She's not done writing Bees, and I hope she keeps Claire alive long enough to keep book 10 a possibility.

Hi Nancy,
Sorry I am just replying! I just saw this. Thanks for making me feel so accomplished! :)
I haven't been reading the rest of the them in any particular way so far, but I checked out a couple from the library and plan to work my way through them! right now I'm doing this 52 book challenge for 2018 and I already picked out my books for the rest of the year, though keeping it flexible works better for me than being rigid, so I think I'll add a bunch of them to my 52 book challenge list. But there are particular categories for each week. I love planning out what to read next!
Here's the 52 book challenge:

Ulla Gomez | 1 comments Hi, I’m new to this group! Have read 15 books on the list, so have a lot of catching up to do. Many of the books on it are on my to-read list, too, so looking forward to ticking them off.

message 61: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've read 37. I went out to https://www.listchallenges.com/pbs-th... where I can do a checklist.

However, there are some series I've not checked off because I havent' finished them.

A Song of Ice and Fire - read Game of Thrones (#1)
Alex Cross series - read Along Came a Spider (#1) and Kiss the Girls (#2)
The Chronicles of Narnia - read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (#1) and The Magician's Nephew (#6)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - read the first one
The Hunger Games - read the first one
Outlander - read the first one

Is anyone interested in continuing any of these series? Let me know!

Which ones are you most interested in reading? Which did you like best?

I plan to finish the Outlander series but it might not be completed for many years. Game of Thrones series isn't done either.

I bailed out of Alex Cross in book 3 I think, and I have no interest in reading 17 more of those books.

Welcome Ulla! You're in a wonderful position. You'll get to read some great books for the first time.

Did you see the poll to determine the next book we read?

Many of us have read 30-50 books so we're focusing on the ones we haven't read yet. But you might prefer to catch up with some of the most popular ones if you missed them.*

If you'd like some recommendations on what to read next, we'd love to make some suggestions. Let us know what you've read already, what you like.

*some of the most popular include:

Harry Potter
To Kill a Mockingbird
Pride and Prejudice
Lord of the Rings

I have a list on my bookshelf that shows the avg ratings, number of ratings, and other info on each book on the list. Listopia has at least 2 lists with GAR books. Let me know if you need help finding them.

I've already read Game of Thrones, Narnia, Hitchhiker's, and Hunger Games.

I've read the first Outlander, but didn't like it. At some point, I plan on reading the second book just to know I gave it a fair chance.

I'm completely open to re-read Narnia and Hitchhiker's at some point.

message 66: by Jess (new)

Jess Penhallow | 28 comments I have read 19 books/series from the list. Most of them I read before I was on Goodreads so only have vague recollections of but my thoughts are below:

1984 - read it a while ago but loved it
The Alchemist - not for me 1 star https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Americanah - I love Adiche but I prefer some of her other books, 3 stars https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Anne of Green Gables - One of my favourite childhood books, I related to Anne as I am also a chatterbox!
Charlotte's Web - Another childhood favourite, very sad
The Chronicles of Narnia - I've read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as a child and I think I randomly read The Silver Chair as well, not sure why as I usually hate reading things out of order. I must go back and read the complete series.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - I enjoyed this book, it was quite unique at the time to have a protagonist with autism and I've also seen the stage show which is very good
Don Quixote - Absolutely hillarious book. I love how the humour translates across the centuries, 5 stars
Frankenstein - I studied this at school and hated it
A Game of Thrones - One of my favourite series of all time, waiting impatiently for the next one (this would possibly get my vote if I lived in the US)
The Great Gatsby - Another one that I studied in school but this one I actually liked
Harry Potter Collection - Another favourite series, not much more I can say about these that haven't been said before
The Help - Another that I read a while ago but I liked it
The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset - Slightly uneven trilogy with the second being the best in my opinion
Jane Eyre - One of my favourite characters in literature
Little Women - I read this as a child and even then found it sachrine
Memoirs of a Geisha - I liked this but don't remember much from it
Pride and Prejudice - I couldn't get through this, I found the characters boring and annoying and don't understand why so many people love it
Wuthering Heights - I loved the spooky aspect of this book and how overdramatic it was

Not that interested in Alex Cross either. Don't even understand how they beat out much better thriller series!
