Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments I will soon be finished with all 72 hours of Stephen Fry reading me all of Sherlock Holmes - 2435 pages! Imagine how many points it is if i had a point for each book as there are a tremendous amount of them. It feels like cheating, but have been enthralled with lots of fabulous stories (at double speed, mind you as it drags a bit slow otherwise.) I highly recommend this audio book, even if it does smack of slightly underhand methods of scribbling increasing page numbers - albeit I cannot resist!

PS Stephen Fry is a master of accents and expressiveness. He makes each individual character so plainly different that you cannot forget who said what!

That's amazing! I think I'll try this audiobook! I've set myself a challenge of reading more books that are longer than 200 pages. I'm almost done with the first volume of Les Misérables (it ends with Cosette's part), so I feel really accomplished. I feel a bit guilty for taking three book points for this book, but hey - it's not my fault it was printed that way :D I have to admit, the manga book I read before is quite distracting - I keep forgetting about reading it and then wonder how I know how things are going to happen before they happen, because it wasn't like that in the movie.

I'm getting a lot of books this week. My parents gave me The Bone Clocks for graduation. I've already read it but it's definitely one of the books I want on my shelves. I also received the prize for this challenge and I absolutely love it! Superb choices! The Giver has been sitting on my to-read shelf for too long and now I'll finally be able to read it as soon as I have some time! Thank you so much! My order from Amazon arrived today as well, so I have another book in French to read: Rendez-vous dans le noir

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments The Giver is a smashing book. They made a film which was a butchery of the book, and not only was was nothing like I'd imagined it, but seemed just a load of old tosh and put me right off. The book is another story! The tale is not original, but it is very well done. It also reads very fast as I remember.

Happy Graduation! x

The Giver is an excellent book! The Bone Clocks in one that has been in my To Read pile for too long, though I'm getting close to finally reading it now.

I'd love to listen to that! It sounds incredibly interesting. Unfortunately it seems at least on Audible the version that's available for me is only a 61 hour version. If I can't find the complete version somewhere I guess 61 hours isn't that bad, I'd definitely be using an audible credit to purchase it though! It's nearly 60 dollars!

I'm using the youtube link Jazzy added a couple of posts back, so I'd definitely save the money! (Or if you're more adventurous, forum.mobilism.org has it in mp3 but you need an account for that)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments the three linked audiobooks on youtube are probably the best. Just remember where you are - or bookmark it on the page. I have less than 200 pages to go!

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments I started reading Caraval, but straight away (by page 12!) it smacked so much of United States middle class in its style and language that I'm taking it back to the charity shop. UGH! Quite a disappointment, and a sad waste of £1.99. I won't be adding it to the spreadsheet or my read books though. I did read to page 24, but it became so loathsome that I had to give it up. This book was supposed to be a fantasy. It looked promising, with a map that hinted it might be Italian in nature, but the Americanisms in the writing were far too blatant.

Kyle | 29 comments Currently listening to How to American: A Narcissistic Memoir Disguised as an Immigrant Story after I saw the interview with Desus and Mero on youtube. I highly recommend it as an audiobook because it is almost like a six hour stand up routine and it's very funny and entertaining. You also get some ad-libbed parts in it as the author is reacting to things he wrote in the book. It's so interesting listening to an audiobook that's just spontaneous and not as strict and "professional" as many other audiobooks. It's so candid and getting some personality in it from the author himself!

I suddenly got on a Goosebumps urge so since I'm home for some family matters I've dug up all my old Goosebumps books to read some of them! I should check out one of R.L. Stine's adult books.

I love the Scots translations. I know nothing Scottish but dang it if I don't love Scottish slang, insults, and cuss words.

It's very similar to the dialect used where I live, known as Geordie, so easy enough to understand. Your use of the words 'dang' and 'cuss' made me giggle. I immediately thought of an old prospector from the mining days of the American west. However I gather you are neither old, nor a prospector!

PS they aren't actually Scots translations as such as they aren't written in Scots Gaelic, but in a dialect.

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 494 comments Currently reading The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Could you just imagine, waking up to discover you are some multi-limbed insect?

message 65: by Tiina (new)

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I'm reading too many books at once. This is the list of books I'm currently reading:
Troonide mäng, esimene raamat
Rendez-vous dans le noir
Hüljatud
Chasing Eveline
An Intimate History of Humanity
Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Audio Collection

At times, I feel like I should have sticked to reading one book at at time, but I'm thoroughly enjoying myself for the time being. I may have to add a new edition of Les Misérables in Estonian, because someone has added all the books under "different editions" (the book was printed as three books in Estonian, so strictly speaking, they're not really different editions) and it will list the book as a reread for me.

I have always wondered on whether the story was representative of artists, bohemians, Jews, etc or a mixture of all of them.

I'm so happy to hear you've received the prize! The Giver is a wonderful book, and I agree with Jazzy, the book is way better than the movie. The Giver is the most popular, but it's part of a series too, and I enjoyed all the books!

Reading too many books at once is a wonderful problem to have isn't it. I admit that I get confused sometimes, because I have books in different formats/different locations, and sometimes I can't remember where to find the book that I'd already started. I've resorted to using a spreadsheet, with a column for where the book is (ie audio-Audible, library, kindle etc)

Happy reading!

I don't know about that, it could just as easily be a story about me on some days/life stages, and I am none of those particular things (though plenty of others)... ;)

Congratulations Mion!

However The Giver is not a series, but there are 'companion books' written decades later. But Goodreads is rubbish as it is always wanting to lump everything together and congeal it like porridge in a bowl.

Just add milk!

Hope you enjoyed your holiday Anne :D

(My phone tried to auto-correct that to joining Hogwarts... Hogwarts. Goodreads. It really is a fine distinction.)

Yeah! There are people that read tons of books in a short period of time! I look at the GoogleSheets and I'm impressed by all the books!

At the end of the challenge we should add up and see how many pages everyone in total read over the summer.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments And some books are comic books or graphic novels and if you don't take time to appreciate the artwork, I imagine you'd get a bunch of pages because less text and more pictures.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments Kyle wrote: "Well if that was the case then books like that shouldn't have been allowed but I think since all books were allowed for the event it still counts."

Yup. I think it really just comes down to the person. I like comic books and mangas but I also pay a lot of attention to the drawings whereas some of my friends just read the text and leaf through the volumes. In any case, it makes it hard to judge if the amount of pages read is in relation to the content. I'd like to see how many words I read throughout the challenge but I don't know if there's a website that lists word counts of all books (although I guess some estimates can be made).

I always used this program whenever in my class I had to read books by the word counts and not pages http://wordcounters.com/index.jsp

It's pretty up to date but of course I don't know how accurate it was. When I did a course on book binding and book making for school there was this old school way we had to count words on a page and you just multiplied it by pages. You can estimate that a book has about 300 words per page and then you multiply it by pages. Or you take a sentence's amount of words and multiply it by the lines and then get the average by the amount of paragraphs and use that to multiply (I think that was the correct way). I'm glad I don't live in those old days of having to write on type writers or writing academic papers by hand where I had to care about counting that.

Tiina (cauchemarlena) | 371 comments I owe a great deal of my this year's reading to this group's challenges. I recently checked my totals and on page count, I am only 600 pages short of last year's total pages read! I will definitely exceed that number, as I've got so many more books planned for this year.

I really want to read The Travelling Cat Chronicles but I'm waiting for a good moment, since I only have it as an ebook. The weather here has been so rainy and thundery, perfect for cups of tea and hardcovers/paperbacks. What books do you all intend to read once you finish the one you're currently reading?

I joined an Australian book club here and have discovered a lot of Aussie authors so I've read more books this month than usual, just finished On the Beach and I have found a place to get all Nevil Shute's books. I also read all day long...all...day ....l..o..n..g and finished The Talented Mr Ripley. i didn't know it was written in 1956 AND by the same author who wrote Strangers on a Train - Patricia Highsmith. I've never actually seen the film (The Talented Mr. Ripley), but from the trailers had assumed the book had been written much later.

Nevil Shute's books
