Female protagonist is a fairy. I believe she is small and rides on the back of a raven. In her travels, she befriends a boy(?) who dons a sort of outer skin that allows him to transform (into a bird?).

(view spoiler)[The protagonist finds an enchanted knife on her travels that decides it likes her (most of those who pick up the knife find it buried in their back, but this does not happen with her). Some sort of evil is slowly growing in the world as a "tapestry" underlying everything falls apart. The protagonist is able to reweave the tapestry using the knife to change the evil into good. (I think there were evil spiders at some point?) (hide spoiler)]
