I agree variety is best for the Readathon. Hope you got a little more reading done "under the covers" ;)

Great job, Kate! That's the hardest part for me, besides needing to sleep. Balancing GR (and now IG) and reading. I only checked in twice and I'm pretty happy about that. Listened to my audiobook while checking in so I was still reading. IG I just posted the hourly photos and my current reads.

message 104: by Kate (last edited Aug 04, 2019 08:47AM) (new)

Kate | 646 comments So final figures for August 2019:

Read some from: Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen
Started and finished graphic novel: Station 16 by Hermann Huppen
Listened to 1 hour 4 mins of audio: The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene

Total pages read: 245
Reading time: 5 hours 6 mins
Total time including audio: 6 hours 10 mins

Having 1 classic, 1 easier read, 1 graphic novel and an audio was a really good mix and worked well for me this time.

Thanks everyone for your comments and encouragement. Already looking forward to October. See you then.

message 105: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments I'm back for October! I've cleared my diary so the only thing that could possibly disrupt my plans for this readathon is if my new nephew enters the world 2 weeks early! lol

message 106: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments So I've had a go at Tic-tac-toe and I've checked out the Bingo board so now I'm ready to start assembling my TBR list and snack plans over the next few days...

Great choices! I may do a series read next Dewey's and Rick Riordan might be a contender. I haven't read any of them!

Yum! Sounds great! I'll be making my soup tonight since my 'thon starts at 8am.

message 116: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 510 comments I just got back from the store! My thon starts at 5 am!
It has also been in the 90's all week with santa ana so no soup here!

message 117: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments And I've started! A good 52 mins in hour one so feel like I'm already making progress.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? I'm in the UK, We start at lunchtime here. Its a typically windy autumn day and we're due rain this afternoon. Good reading weather!
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? I think starting a reread of Harry Potter #1
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? My favourite is definitely the chocolate cornflake minibites!
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I'm going to be a first time Auntie soon! My nephew is due mid-November. Our whole family are very excited.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? Have longer periods of reading and only drop into Goodreads for blocks of time rather than trying to do a bit of everything each hour.

message 118: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments I'm almost jealous that it's going to rain there! But I mean, I can't complain that I have sun. lol.

message 119: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments I'm heading to the conservatory for the next hour to read in a new space and enjoy the sound of the rain!
Also taking coffee number 1 and the chocolate cornflake minibites with me!

message 120: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Well, I ended up with hot chocolate and cream as that seemed more appropriate for the weather!
Had a good go at the first Sprint and made a dent in Harry Potter #1

Kate | 646 comments So I've had a go at one of the mini challenges. Its the Title Name one. I'm not taking pictures because I've no idea how to upload but my Book choices are:

K - Killman by G W Kent
A - Atlantis Found by Clive Cussler
T - Thud! by Terry Pratchett
E - Endal: How One Extraordinary Dog Brought a Family Back from the Brink By Allen Parton

Congrats on becoming an Auntie! I have no kids. I thought my 2 nephews were pretty cool (10 & 11 years old) and then 2 years ago my unexpected niece was born and I am sooooo in love. We have such fun times together, and she gets super excited about having sleep-overs at my place! She fills my heart!

message 124: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Aw thanks Emma! Glad to hear nephews can be cool! I'm a bit apprehensive as haven't any kids of my own so it'll be a steep learning curve!

message 125: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Had a bit of a break for dinner and stopped to watch Strictly Come Dancing Halloween week so that ticked the bingo box for watch something spooky!
Also finished my first book:
Wonder Woman, Volume 1: Blood
It was a graphic novel and unfortunately not as good as I'd hoped.

message 126: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Finished a short story and filled in a lot of the bingo board. Can't believe I've completed 13 squares but no bingo yet!

Its 11pm here and I'm beginning to flag. I'll take books to bed with me and see how much I can read before I really need sleep!
See you in the morning!

Nadia Batista (booksbynadia) | 86 comments Hi Kate :) I couldn't agree more with Emma. I adore my nephew who will be 3 years old in April and it melts my heart everytime I hear him call me Tia (Portuguese for Aunt) <3 I'm not planning on having kids of my own so that little prince fills my needs :) Welcome to Hour 12!

message 128: by Kate (new)

How lovely for you Nadia. I can't wait to be an Auntie and start having fun with him!

Kate | 646 comments Hooray I finally got a bingo line!

message 130: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Final Tally for October 2019:

Books finished: Wonder Woman, Volume 1 Blood by Brian Azzarello To Be Read By Candlelight by Edith Wharton

Books partially read: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling The Pyrates by George MacDonald Fraser The Iliad by Homer Northanger Abbey (The Austen Project, #2) by Val McDermid

Total pages read: 417
Total time read: 7 hours 50 mins

I'd really like to get over 500 pages and hit 12 hours reading time so think they should be targets for next time around.

I managed most of the bingo with only 2 squares missing.

message 134: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Closing Survey!
How would you assess your reading overall? Pretty successful. I read a range of books and finished a couple of them,
Did you have a stategy, and if so, did you stick to it? Sort of, I tried to stick to one book per hour rather than a couple in a single hour and that worked better. Still need to work out what reading time to social media ratio needs to be.
What was your favorite snack? The chocolate corn flake mini bites. Those will have to become a tradition!
Wanna volunteer for our next event? It'll depend on the date.

Thanks everyone, it was great fun and I can't wait for the next one.

Me toooo. It's so hard. I only post hourly photos on IG, I don't have the time to look at others' photos. And then every time I check into GR I have 50+ notifications. And I forget about hourly discussions and reading sprints! lol.

I've got some books set aside for the April Magical Readathon and have a couple of those that could work nicely for Dewey's too.
I'll post a potential TBR list soon but I don't want to get ahead of myself in case there are any pre-readathon activities in the planning....

message 143: by Kate (new)

Kate | 646 comments Still hoping for a pre-readathon Bingo or something but in the meantime I've got a potential TBR list which is based on my book choices for the Magical Readathon:

Mythos The Greek Myths Retold (Stephen Fry's Great Mythology, #1) by Stephen Fry Marley and Me Life and Love With the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan Up the Faraway Tree (The Faraway Tree, #4) by Enid Blyton
Also The Noose Hangs High by Frank C. Robertson which appears to be too old to be listed on GR. I'll have to add it!

I'm currently reading: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz and Death in the Stocks by Georgette Heyer but expect I'll have finished these before the readathon starts.
