SOLVED. YA; sisters living in the US whose family is Middle Eastern. [s]

I read this book in the last year or two. Young adult book, two sisters. I remember one was more traditional than the other. They changed high schools. Seems like they had an extended family. I remember a scene where one of the girls makes friends with a younger black boy. They lived in kind of a poor neighborhood. I really can't remember the plot. Mom went with them when they began their new school. One girl was academically gifted.

When searching online I ran across this excerpt from a book that sounds just like it. Unfortunately when I click on it it doesn't include any informations on it. "But the temptations of her new life set her adrift from her old one—the friends from her former, rundown, school, and a family kept going by her father's factory work and her mother's home sewing of designer knockoffs—in a book depicting two very different worlds and the sharply drawn girl who attempts to ..."

I found the description you quoted on Barnes & Nobles website, and the book is Lucy and Linh by Alice Pung. It has Vietnamese immigrants in Australia, so it might not be your book after all...
