Good news: I finally broke my reading drought
Bad news: it was with a combination true crime/memoir and didn't really lead me to read anything else.

The book was I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara. If you know the actor Patton Oswalt, she's his late wife who died before she could finish this book or find the Golden State Killer. Great book. But I don't really read true crime as a rule so it's a one-off I think.

I just this afternoon got home from five days in the hospital, so I have not been reading much. I did start Ruff Around the Edges, but even my love for the Dogfather series could not keep me awake long enough to read more than a third of it.

Janga, I hope that you are alright.

I've been reading books I purchased but never quite got around to. I just finished Fool Me Twice by Meredith Duran and enjoyed it. I'm uncertain about the rest of the series though as there doesn't seem to be anything tying the other books in.

Stacey (staceyissassy) All the best Janga, hope you're on the mend.

I'm reading an ARC of The Luck of the Bride by Janna MacGregor. After that, it will be an ARC of Without Apology by Aubrey Bondurant and an ARC of Heart of Fire by Lisa Edmonds.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and get-well wishes. I am definitely feeling better that I did last week--even though I am now battery-operated. :)

I finished Ruff Around the Edges and am about to begin an ARC of Jill Shalvis's The Good Luck Sister, followed by the ARC of another Sister book, Sarah Morgan's The Christmas Sisters.

Irisheyes | 896 comments I was on a Lauren Layne binge last week. She's a funny author for me - sometimes she's great and other times I feel like it's not the same author. I loved Runaway Groom so I thought I would dive into the Oxford books and they just feel off. Oh well!

I started Chaser by Kylie Scott this morning and I'm enjoying that. It is written from the male POV which is different but very amusing.

Chocolatesoup | 398 comments I devoured the first 3 books of Kate Meader's Chicago Rebels series In Skates Trouble, Irresistible You &So Over You. So, so good. 2 more books in the series and I cannot wait! Right now, I'm listening to Dumplin' (YA and I'm loving it) and enjoying Indecent Exposure.

Next up is The Rosie Project which I'll reread for my book club & Murder on the Orient Express a buddy read with my teenager.

Irisheyes | 896 comments I loved Chaser. If you are a Kylie Scott fan don't wait on this one. I also loved the male POV because Eric was adorable. And I got my Mal fix!

I had such mixed reactions to Chaser. On the one hand Scott did an amazing job with the male POV. On the other hand he is really clueless so he doesn’t really get why his feelings are evolving and also, he is just not that likeable a character.

Irisheyes | 896 comments I can see that, Deb. I looked at him as kind of a lovable airhead, I suppose. Which is better than the way I perceived him in the last 2 books - which was just mean. I was kind of hesitant to read this book because I really didn't like him in DIRTY and TWIST. I felt Scott did a brilliant thing writing the book in his POV, though. Listening to his internal monologue changed my mind about him. And I saw him change throughout the book as seeing women as just objects to scratch his itch to real people deserving of his respect and care. He started putting Jean and Ada's wants and needs ahead of his own.

What did you think about Nell? There's been comments I've been reading that Scott took her animosity too far. What do you think?

I'm glad I have such a bad memory and forgot how horrible Eric was before this book. I liked his metamorphosis too and his attempts to change his ways.

I didn't know there were comments about Nell but it doesn't surprise me. She came across as a little OTT and mean...but then again, she had a lot of reasons to be.

Hi Irisheye.
Nell didn’t bother me. Partly I think she was right about Eric at the start of the book and just didn’t see him changing. That’s human nature—and he was hiding his relationship with Jean anyway so she didn’t really see all the change.
And partly I think she blamed Eric to avoid dealing with her own guilt about getting pregnant with him. (I’m not saying she should have felt guilty just that she did.) Which is also pretty normal.
But I wonder why Nell and Pat didn’t get their own book and we only see them through other people’s stories.

Yeah, I wondered why Nell and Pat didn't get their own book, too. I even went back to check in case I missed one. :-)
