message 6856: by Aubrie (new)

Aubrie Elliot | 4 comments I am currently reading THE LANGUAGE OF KIN by Lynne Hugo. I am absolutely enthralled - I mean it - from the very first paragraph. It's not even a book I would normally pick up, but Lynne is an award-winning author from an Indie press and I got a free advance copy, so I started reading.

It starts with the capture (described so well that I was in tears) of baby chimpanzees - then focuses on one, "Eve" who makes her way to a zoo - saved from a life of being used from medical experiments.

I am not that far in, but I just had to say something. Seldom am I so engaged from the very first page.

Wow.

How are you liking "The Covenant of Water?" My book club wants to read it this Fall and I just put it into the circulation system on Saturday when I worked. It is a large book.

Rashiee Pengoria (rashiee_pengoria) | 1 comments I'm currently reading this excellent book 'Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood' by one of my favourite public figures, Trevor Noah- Born a Crime Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah which The Guardian described as 'A remarkable memoir leavened with insight and wit, Born a Crime does more to expose apartheid-its legacy, its pettiness, its small-minded stupidity and its damage than any other recent history or academic text.'

In another, it said, 'Essential reading...fast-paced, funny and inspirational...Trevor Noah's life is all about achieving the impossible.'

It's a must-read for anyone looking for a fun, engaging story with abundant wit, insights, inspiration and humour. :)

Kristine | 284 comments Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See , Lisa See. I have read 75% of this book and just love it. I can’t wait to read more. It is a fascinating story, set in late 1400’s. The culture and history in China is fascinating. The book starts with a young girl, who is smart and wants to be a doctor. Her grandmother teaches her all she knows even though women are not allowed to be doctors. Then it follows her throughout her life. Riveting Story.
