Fiction/non fiction? A man wants to try every drug once but when he's overseas (Indonesia maybe?) he becomes addicted to Heroin

I read this around 2008-2011 and I can't remember what it was called as a friend lent it to me. At the time I thought it was non fiction and I seem to recall a yellow cover. Basically this guy who never touched drugs (american i think) wants to try everything once but becomes addicted to heroin. A main part i remember is how he'd try saving money by moving from smoking to needles.

Any suggestions for what it could be?!

Just a guess, but: Escaping The Dragon is a memoir of heroin addiction published in 1985, with a yellowish cover.
