Tasks
✔1. JUNKANOO
Junkanoo is a unique Bahamian street festival dating back to the 17th century. Participants gather in the pre-dawn hours of the morning to "rush" down Bay Street. The high energy parade takes place on Boxing Day (December 26), and is reminiscent of the Brazilian Carnival. Hundreds of dancers and musicians spend months to create elaborate, colorful, hand-made costumes from cardboard and crepe, and to rehearse their dances. The participants shake cowbells, use whistles, blow brass instruments and beat goat-skin drums. At other times of the year you may be able to catch mini “rush outs” as a part of the entertainment of major resorts or restaurants.
In conjunction to this is Educulture Bajamas, a museum that preserves the costumes, music and performance art of Junkanoo, spanning from the olden days when costumes were made from newspaper and sponge, to present-day works of art.
✱ Read a book with music or dancing as a central theme (share how it fits) OR
✱ Read a book with a parade or costumes on the cover or in the text (post cover or share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in JUNKANOO PARADE.- Around the World in 50 Years: My Adventure to Every Country on Earth by Albert Podell-1/8/21
✔2. BAY STREET
Nassau’s two major industries of tourism and banking meld on Bay Street. It’s not uncommon to see vacationers in swimsuits walking beside business professionals in the heart of historic Nassau. For centuries, Bay Street has operated as the country’s center for trade and business. However, every year thousands of tourists descend on the area to enjoy the mix of pubs, cafes and art galleries, as well as to bargain hunt and buy duty-free items. International designers like Gucci also have storefronts on Bay Street for the high-end shopper. While in the area, a visit to Nassau’s famous Straw Market is recommended. It is an excellent place to find local handcrafted straw items such as handbags and hats.
✱ Read a book that centers around a restaurant, cafe or pub (give a brief description) OR
✱ Read a book with a store on the cover or one where the MC goes shopping (post cover or share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in STRAW MARKET.- The Father by August Strindberg-1/11/21-
✔3. THE QUEEN'S STAIRCASE AND FORT FINCASTLE
This 102-foot ascent from Elizabeth Avenue to Fort Fincastle and the Water Tower was carved out of a limestone wall by 18th century slaves. The steps afforded soldiers protected passage to and from the fort. The staircase was named in honor of Queen Victoria and the 66 years of her reign. The original staircase did have 66 steps; It now only has 65 as the bottom one got buried when the path to the stairs was paved. Residents, tourists, and fitness buffs use the steps regularly, so it can get quite crowded.
At the top of the stairs, at the highest point of the island, are the ruins of Fort Fincastle, built by Governor Lord Dunmore in 1793. The fort's name came from Lord Dunmore's noble title of Viscount Fincastle. It was small and never used in battle, but it was the perfect lookout for approaching pirates. The awesome panoramic views of the island, harbor, and surrounding waters are much prized today. The adjacent 126 foot water tower was built in the early 1900s; it once also served as a lighthouse. Its observation deck provides terrific views, as well.
✱ Read a book with stairs or steps on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book showing a view (water, a town, an island, etc) on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE QUEEN'S STAIRCASE.- A Murder Is Announcedbook:A Murder Is Announced|16298] by Agatha Christie-1/3/21
✔4. CLIFTON HERITAGE NATIONAL PARK
This multi-faceted park preserves the island's natural and social history. The multi-acre park sits on a quiet side of Nassau, and features the remains of an ancient Lucayan Indian village, the ruins of Loyalists' 18th- and 19th-century plantations, and artistic wooden sculptures. It also has several hiking trails that reveal cliffs, coastal westlands, rocky shorelines, sandy beaches, and offshore coral reefs. Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, fishing, birdwatching and picknicking.
One such place for swimming is Jaws Beach, located behind Clifton Heritage Park. It has white sand, rocky protrusions, shallow water, and shade trees, making it a good choice for families with kids.
Also not to be missed at Clifton Heritage Park is a snorkeling adventure to the coral reef sculpture garden. Here you can view various underwater sculptures, the most notable of which is the 60 ton "Ocean Atlas" by Jason deCaires Taylor.
✱ Read a book with ruins or a sculpture on the cover - Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist by M.C. Beaton-12/3/20-

or in the text (post cover or share text) OR
✱ Read a book with a plantation or beach on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in CLIFTON HERITAGE NATIONAL PARK
✔5. PIRATES OF NASSAU MUSEUM
This interactive pirate experience in downtown Nassau takes you back to the year of 1716, when piracy reigned. Vignettes, interactive Q&As, and realistic sound effects present non-romanticized fact and fiction behind Nassau's celebrated swashbuckling past. It's lightly educational, and entertaining for anyone fascinated by this part of island history.
✱ Read a book with a ship on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book featuring pirates (be creative & share text or circumstance) OR

✔6. ADASTRA GARDENS ZOO AND CONSERVATION CENTRE
Originally created as a nature preserve, Adastra Gardens has evolved into a tropical garden, conservation center, boutique zoo, and wildlife rescue and rehab center. Over 135 animals now call it home. Here you'll encounter, among others, lemurs, monkeys, reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, and a wonderful array of birds. Some just may share the walkways with you as you stroll along its four acres. Try to time your visit to see the trained flamingos, national bird of the Bahamas, march in unison and on command. The attraction also includes feeding times for its colorful lorikeets, and guests are invited to enter the screened aviary to hand feed the birds. Enjoy as well the briiliant array of flowers, orchids, and trees which thrive in the temperate weather. Although quite close to downtown Nassau, this place feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
✱ Read a book with a bird or wild animal on the cover (post the cover) OR
✱ Read a book with a character who takes care of animals (share text) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ADASTRA GARDENS ZOO-Orange Crush by Tim Dorsey 1/1/21

New Year's Traditions
December 1, 2020 - January 31, 2021
100p. min.
8/8
✔1. In Greece, Turkey and Armenia, pomegranates are a source of good luck. In Greek mythology, the pomegranate is said to resemble the human heart in color and shape, and is a symbol for fertility, life and health. Modern Greeks, smash a pomegranate against the door of their house and the number of seeds that are scattered are directly correlated with the amount of good luck to come. In Turkey, they open a pomegranate on New Year’s Eve so insure wealth and prosperity in the coming year. And in Armenia the fruit are thrown on the ground and again, the more the pieces and seeds spread, the more successful the new year will be.
✺ Read a book with fruit on the cover or with a cover that is primarily red (post cover) - Orange Crush by Tim Dorsey 1/1/21-

OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location starting with the letter G, T or A (tell us where) OR
✺ Read a book tagged MYTHOLOGY on its GR homepage.
✔2. It's not fruit that is thrown in Denmark but plates!! Residents of the county believe that broken glass is meant to bring good luck. So after eating a traditional holiday meal of boiled cod and a tower of marzipan doughnuts called kransekage, they greet the New Year by throwing old plates and glasses against the doors of family and friends to banish bad spirits. It is said that the bigger your pile of broken dishes, the more luck you will have in the upcoming year.

OR
✺ Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in BROKEN (ignore A, An or The).
✔3. In Venezuela they wear bright yellow underwear for luck, and typically showcase it for the world to see. Whether that means wearing underwear on the outside or no pants at all, each are supposedly good luck. Other variations of the same ritual include wearing different colors for what you want to have in the new year: red for love, gold for wealth, and white for peace and a fresh start. Extra luck is bestowed upon the wearer if the underwear is new and was received as a gift.

✔4. Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve in Japan, the Japanese eat soba noodles while listening to the bells across the country ringing. The Toshikoshi Soba, which means “year crossing buckwheat noodle” has lots of symbolism. The long noodle denotes the crossing from one year to the next and signify a letting go of the past year’s regrets, before the fresh start the new year brings. And in all the Buddhist temples, the traditional ceremony of bell-ringing takes place, where the bells are rung 108 time filling the night with beautiful music.
✺ Read a book that has something long and thin on the cover (post cover) OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location that start with a letter in JAPAN (tell us where) OR
✺ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in SOBA.- MC=Sharon McCone in Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20
✔5. In Spain, the first 12 seconds of their New Year are focused on eating 12 “miraculous grapes” that symbolize 12 lucky months ahead. Eating these grapes pretty much guarantees starting off the year with a little adrenaline rush, and most likely some laughs. It’s thought to be bad luck if you can’t eat them all by the final midnight chime. But gobble them down in time and 12 months of good fortune will come your way.
✺ Read a book with a mouth shown prominently on the cover (post cover) OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in SPAIN (tell us where) -Paris- Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet 1/1/21
OR
✺ Read a book with 1 AND 2 in the total page count (any order – post pages).
✔6. If you're celebrating New Year's Eve in South Africa, watch out for flying furniture. Throwing old furniture out of windows is supposed to symbolize casting away old problems and getting a fresh start. People stockpile old fridges, couches, and more in the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve and then out the window it goes. Throwing things from tall buildings has been condemned as a hazardous tradition in recent years, so the tradition is limited and caution must be taken, making it not as common as it once was.
✺ Read a book with any type of furniture on the cover (post cover) OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in SOUTH AFRICA (tell us where) OR
✺ Read a "used" book - one you purchased or received second hand.- Openly Bob by Bob Smith-12/6/20
7. What began as a pagan ritual to ward off bad spirits has become a unique tradition in Romania. During the "dance of the bear," which happens every year between Christmas and New Year's Eve, dancers dress up in real bear skins and dance to the rhythm of pan flutes and drums, to ward off evil spirits and ring in the new year. While this tradition is still observed in many villages, in cities and towns it usually takes the form of a parade that culminates in a major performance in the center.
✺ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover or with a cover that is primarily brown (post cover) OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in ROMANIA (tell us where)-Melbourne, Australia- Blood and Circuses by Kerry Greenwood-1/5/21
OR
✺ Read a book that has some kind of spirit or ghost in the plot.
✔8. In hopes of a travel-filled new year, it is common for residents of Colombia to run hard and fast around the house with an empty suitcase in hand. For those unable to run, you can simply carry an empty suitcase around the block. This is one New Year’s tradition Wanderlust can completely get behind!
✺ Read a book with a suitcase on the cover (post cover) OR
✺ Read a book that takes place in a location that starts with a letter in COLOMBIA (tell us where) OR
✺ Read a book tagged TRAVEL on its GR homepage or a book where travel is the central theme.- The Call of the Weird: Travels in American Subcultures by Louis Theroux 12/12/20

Trip to the Andes: Bolivia
December 1, 2020-February 28, 2021
100p. min.
15/15
✔Day 1: La Paz
La Paz, with its 3,640 meters of elevation (11,942 feet), is the highest city in the world and is the seat of the government of Bolivia, while the constitutional capital is Sucre. Yes, Bolivia has two capitals! The city is located in a valley dominated by the snow-capped Illimani peak. Founded in 1548, its full name would be Nuestra Señora de La Paz. The city is not known for its monuments, but it is the starting point for various excursions in its surroundings.
* Read a series #2 book - Ask the Cards a Question by Marcia Muller-12/2/20
OR read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in NUESTRA SENORA DE LA PAZ (three word minimum).
In La Paz there are several interesting museums and the most visited church is the Basilica of San Francisco. But tourists are attracted to its markets, especially the so-called “witches market” (mercado de las brujas). Here you will find amulets, folk remedies and objects dedicated to the cult of the Pachamama (Mother Earth, a goddess worshiped by the Incas and other Andean peoples) being sold. To tell the truth some of the merchandise on display is a bit creepy.
* Read a book where a market or witch is mentioned (share the text) OR read a book that has something or someone magical in the story (tell us briefly about it).
✔Day 2: La Paz and Tiwanaku
The airport is located in the nearby municipality of El Alto, overlooking the city of La Paz to which it is connected by a cable-way inaugurated in 2014. Much of the trip to Bolivia takes place at very high altitudes and many tourists try the same remedy used by the local population: chewing coca leaves. The leaves are sold freely, but know that if your journey involves crossing over into one of the neighboring countries you will have serious problems at customs if you find yourself in possession of such goods. Another remedy for altitude sickness is mate, an infusion made from a local plant.
✔* Read a book in the top 10 of your TBR (sorted in any way) OR read a book published in 2014.-pub. 2014- The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain-1/16/21-
About 70 kilometers from La Paz is the Tiwanaku site, which takes its name from a pre-Columbian civilization that inhabited the area that now marks the borders between Bolivia, Peru and Chile. The site was founded around 200 BC and disappeared around 1100 AD. When it reached its maximum expansion, it accommodated some tens of thousands of people! In 2000 it was designated as an Unesco World Heritage Site and its best known (and photographed) monument is the Gate of the Sun.
✔* Read a book whose MC's name begins with a letter in TIWANAKU OR read a book with at least 2000 ratings on its GR homepage.-over 5000 ratings- Our Lady of the Flowers by Jean Genet 1/1/21
Day 3: Titicaca Lake, Copacabana and Isla del Sol
Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and is divided between Bolivia and Peru. The Bolivian shore is a holiday destination for the wealthy and is home to Copacabana, a town famous for the basilica of the Virgin, who is venerated throughout South America, The Festival of the Virgin is so important that they celebrate it twice a year in Copacabana and you will even see cars being baptized: a very unusual sight.
* Read a book set in a beach town or village OR read a book in which a somewhat particular ceremony takes place (describe it to us briefly).
Lake Titicaca is famous for the floating islands of the Uros, but in the Bolivian territory the largest terrestrial island is the Isla del Sol. This island has been inhabited since the times of the Incas and in fact, you can find some remains of that period that include a staircase and a temple dedicated to the god Inti (the Sun god). Many of the terraces used by the current inhabitants also date back to that period. From the island you can admire beautiful sunrises or equally remarkable sunsets over the lake, so much so that many tourists decide to stay there for at least one night to enjoy them.
* Read a book with a title that begins with either the letter I or U (ignore A, An or The) OR read a book with a sunrise or a sunset on the cover (post the cover).
✔Day 4: Santa Cruz de la Sierra and the Amazon
Founded in 1561, Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the most populous city in Bolivia and with its 400 meters of elevation (1,300 feet) it is almost a rarity among Bolivian cities. The old town ( Casco Viejo ) has retained a colonial feel, but the city is making a name for itself with its cultural institutions. A good idea is to visit its museums: Museo de Historia, Museo Etno-folklórico Municipal and Museo di Historia Natural, which show an insight into the Oriente, the tropical zone of Bolivia.
* Read a book tagged HISTORY or HISTORICAL on its GR page OR read a book whose author’s first and last initials are found in SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA.- A Murder Is Announcedbook:A Murder Is Announced|16298] by Agatha Christie-1/3/21
Santa Cruz can be a starting point for those wishing to have a taste of the Amazonia, which, as it is known, is the largest existing rainforest in the world and is crossed by the longest river in the world, the Amazon River. You will find that 50% of the world's flower species are found here, some of which have medicinal properties. Among the many animals present, which we all got to know thanks to the documentaries, I like to remember the macaw, the largest parrot in existence, with its various species.
* Read a book where a great river is mentioned (share the text) OR read a book whose MC works in the medical field (tell us what he or she does).
Day 5: Sucre
Founded in 1538, Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia. Since 1559 it was the seat of judicial power in the region, then a Spanish colony; in 1604 it became the seat of an archbishopric and twenty years later the second university in the Americas was founded there. The wealth of well-preserved colonial buildings meant that in 1991 it was recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Many of its buildings are white, so much so that it is known as La Cudad Blanca or The White City.
* Read a book whose MC's name begins with a letter in SUCRE -Emily Pollifax in A Palm for Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman-1/4/21
OR read a book with a predominantly white cover (post the cover).
Built in 1621, the House of Liberty is the most important building in the nation. Here, in fact, Simón Bolívar founded the Bolivian republic by writing its constitution. Although there are many monuments to describe (and visit) in the city, it is worth spending a few words on this important figure. Simón Bolívar (1783-1830), to whom Bolivia owes its name, is a hero in many South American countries: in fact he also contributed to the independence of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela, so much so that he was given the title of Libertador (Liberator). He was also a fervent anti-slavery proponent and hoped to create a great union of the South American states, a project partially implemented between 1819 and 1831 with Greater Colombia (made up of the current states of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama).
✔* Read a book with a hero as MC (your interpretation; tell us why he/she is a hero) - a mathematical and science genious who had to also deal with severe homophobia- Alan Turing: Unlocking the Enigma by David Boyle-2/12/21
OR read a book set in South America (tell us where).
