I will recommend a sci-fi fantasy to you, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1) by Douglas Adams

Delmy (needfulreads) | 346 comments Thank you Sheila!

I've never read anything by Terry Pratchett but I will give a go. is it a stand alone story? will I understand what's going on without having read the previous books?

message 103: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 103 comments Delmy,

You can read it as a stand alone. But you may like it enough that you will want to read the others :)

message 104: by Sheila (new)

Sheila | 103 comments Jude,

Thanks for for the recommendation. You are right that I would enjoy it, because I did. But I haven't read them all so I can go down the list to #5 and read Mostly Harmless.

message 105: by Lee (new)

Lee Jude,

Since you recommended The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I'd like to recommend Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman

JoJo Kirkman (jojo2013) | 813 comments Erin, if you haven't read the Harry Potter series yet, I recommend you read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone, the first book.
If you have, I recommend you read Doctor Sleep by Stephen King.

Literary AMess (literary-a-mess) | 19 comments Hello JoJo

I see that you are trying to read more classics and you have Wuthering Heights on your "To Read" list. I would love it if you to give it a try and tell what you think about it:)

message 109: by Lee (new)

Lee Hello, Sowndarya!

I actually have a couple for you. I saw that you like YA and historical fiction so I recommend The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Guide, #1) by Mackenzi Lee . Then I saw that you has read PS I Love You, so I recommend Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern by the same author.

message 110: by Reenah (new)

Reenah | 179 comments Hi Erin,

I'd recommend the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, starting with The Amulet of Samarkand. The jinni is hilarious.

I also liked Caraval for some YA fun.

Hi Catherine!
I saw that you like romance novels, so may I suggest Cinder & Ella to you? I've read it a few months ago as well as it's sequel Happily Ever After. Ella is quite witty and I loved the way Kelly Oram portrays her.

message 114: by Lee (new)

Lee Hello, Janneke!

I saw that you had quite a few YA novels and some of them were dystopian, so I recommend Scythe. I fell in love with it!! I thought it was wonderful! I also saw that you have Legend in your TBR and I think you should definitely pick that one up too. I loved that series and have now started finding anything that Marie Lu writes.

message 115: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Brittany, thank you for vouching for Moloka'i! I will definitely try to read it this month.

message 116: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Hi Mindy!
I have a few ideas for you. First, i saw you read the Hate You Give which reminded me of the book The Sun Is Also a Star Really cute and also deals with some racism and family ethnicity expectations. Also i highly recommend reading People of the Book which is painful, but beautiful all the way through. (I saw it on your TBR list and thought i would give it a plug). Three in one lol. My last recommendation is a super good thriller i just read recently I See You it will have several twists you did not see coming. Happy reading!

SarahKat | 6228 comments Jenny,

Based on a lot of the books you've read (or are reading), I think you'd like Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Jenny-Lee (jlb1311) | 2 comments Hi SarahKat
I had a look at your bookshelves and everything I wanted to recommend already appeared a few pages later :) Such great taste. I think you might enjoy Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor.

message 120: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Jenny-Lee,

Looks like you enjoy historical fiction dealing with ethnic diversity. I would recommend Homegoing which is an African heritage story and Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge a little known story of one of Washington's slaves who ran away.

Hi Jenny,
I saw that you have read quite some YA and retellings of tales. I suggest: Cinder & Ella
and its sequel Happily Ever After. I also recommend The Lightning Thief. The first is a retelling of Cinderella with a modern twist, the second include many ancient Greek myths. I think you'd enjoy them.

I don't know why the first sentence has a hyperlink. Goodreads can do weird things sometimes

message 123: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 799 comments Hi Sowndarya,

I see you like YA and fantasy. May I recommend the YA fantasy books The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown. Both are all-time favorites of mine.

And definitely keep going with the Chronicles of Narnia! I think The Horse and His Boy may be my favorite of those.

message 124: by SarahKat, Buddy Reads (new)

SarahKat | 6228 comments Hi Jennifer,

I notice that one of your favorite books to read are about science. I'd recommend The Violinist's Thumb: And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, as Written by Our Genetic Code by Sam Kean. There's some really interesting stories in there.

Jennifer | 799 comments Hi SarahKat,

Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out!

I noticed you like psychological suspense. If you haven't already read it I'd recommend The Stepford Wives.

While I haven't read it, I've heard good things about The Real Mrs. Price.

message 128: by SarahKat, Buddy Reads (new)

SarahKat | 6228 comments Catherine,

I noticed you enjoyed Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I suggest continuing on with that series and reading The Lost Symbol and/or Inferno. Inferno is my favorite of the series, and of course you don't have to read them in order really.

message 129: by Aqsa (new)

Aqsa (her_747) | 33 comments SarahKat,

I found you had Red Queen in your TBR. I read it last month and it's really great.

Jennifer | 799 comments Hi JoJo,

I noticed you're currently reading Shakespeare. I enjoyed The Merchant of Venice and Measure for Measure.

I also saw you're interested in reading more classics. I'd suggest the novel The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope. A short story you might be interested in would be Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville.

This sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation!

message 132: by Agnieszka (last edited Apr 06, 2018 12:28PM) (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 824 comments Jennifer,
I noticed you have quite a number of non-fiction on your shelves and I loved Gut The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders so much. It's such a fun written and very insightful book.

And because I love recommending books and Janneke (msg. #141) & Erin (msg. #133) were skiped I recommend for:

Janneke - two books from your TBR & a bonus :-)
Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1) by L.M. Montgomery loved it & The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery by the same author is my all-time favorite - if you want to give a 'new book' a try or if you are in the mood for a classic Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (the first third of the book I struggled a bit each time I read it - but the other two thirds more than compensate it :-))

Erin - two books from you TRB:
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie in my opinion her very best
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett a YA classic I read several time and plan to re-read this year again :-)

Janneke wrote: "...I don't know why the first sentence has a hyperlink. Goodreads can do weird things sometimes"

Happened to me in the beginning several times as well, so I 'played' with my messages a bit and found out if the book link is sometimes cut this happens. When you delete the book link it should be fixed (and the itallic in your answer should dissapear as well - at least as long as you leave the at the end of the previous person's part). I hope it helps :-)

message 133: by Lee (new)

Lee Hello, Agnieszka!

I saw that you like Christian books, so I thought that I would recommend:

The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin

I don't remember it explicitly mentioning God, but it is by a Christian author and was a clean romance.

message 134: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 55 comments Hi Erin

message 136: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 799 comments Hi Agnieszka,

Thanks for the recommendation! I noticed your thriller shelf, and so I think you might like The R Document and/or Fail-Safe. I usually don't buy books (the library is my best friend) but I liked these two so much that I went to the bookstore and bought both of them.

Gathering Blue (The Giver, #2) by Lois Lowry

message 138: by Lee (new)

Lee Rachel,

I saw that you have Saga, Vol. 1 (Saga, #1) by Brian K. Vaughan in your want to read! You should read that and let me know what you think!!! Then if you like that, Brian K. Vaughan has another series that I've started and enjoy called Paper Girls, Vol. 1 (Paper Girls, #1) by Brian K. Vaughan and it's interesting!!

Sharon,

I saw that you have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson in your want to read and I loved that one! I highly recommend it! And then since you like romance and have liked some of her other stuff Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover . It wasn't my thing, but maybe you could enjoy it more than I did!

Thanks Blagica, that is on my very-soon-to-be-read list. I can't wait to read that one!

message 147: by matilde (new)

matilde (matiswonderland) Alison: I see you have a lot of my favorite books on your shelf, but I want to recommend Wonder by R.J. Palacio to you. I found it be a very important book that I think everyone should read in their lifetime. It had me reflect on how I act around people who looks different than I do, and made me want to change that.

message 148: by Marina (new)

Marina (themarinabox) | 37 comments Hi Matilde, I saw that you've read The Girl on The Train this year, I would like to recommend you to read Before I Go to Sleep. It's as fast-paced and you will jump right into the story as soon as you read it.

message 149: by Angela (new)

Angela Holt (angelaaholt) | 36 comments Hi, Marina, I LOVED Before I Go to Sleep! Since you're recommending that, I think you'd really like The Last Mrs. Parrish! If you don't think that will tickle your fancy, or you want a second recommendation, check out I Let Her Go! :-) I think you'll like both!

message 150: by Lee (new)

Lee Hi, Angela! First off, I see that you have a lot of The Magic Tree House books in your want to read and I think you really should read those. They were my favorite when I was younger and every now and then I'll read them still. They are just so much fun! Definitely, read more to your children!

I also noticed Cloud Atlas. I read that book earlier this year and my recommendation is to go in trying not to think about how amazing everyone says it is. Go in as clueless as possible.

Please also read The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I absolutely loved that book! And The Merchant of Death. I think this entire series (okay what I've read of it) is pretty excellent!
