Chaya | 6 comments This is a trilogy for children. I can not remember a lot of details about it. It was about a girl who had magic powers of some sort and she lived in a town that was surrounded by a gate. If she went past the gate something would happen to her powers that would, I think, make them not work. There was a tower in which someone was being held captive. I’m pretty sure her grandfather played a big role in the novel. Sorry for posting such a vague question but I hope someone can help me!

okay so all im honestly thinking is the Abhorsen books. Garth nix originally wrote them as a YA fiction trilogy. Sabriel is the first book and is about a young girl (its her father not her grandfather though that gets trapped) there are towers involved but not quite like the rapunzel kind. anyways, the world is called the Old kingdom, and if she crosses the wall, to ancelstierre, then the magic wanes and is hard to reach. they use a system called 'the charter'. good reads but possibly what you are looking for. the father is the captive. there are more than three books now, but the original trilogy goes 'Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen.'

Autumn Francia | 66 comments Oh yeah I should mention the main theme of these books is that the Abhorsen, is the title for the person who can wield the charter and also lay the dead to rest. Basically, anti-necromancy. Sabriel has to save her father and the world from an evil necromancer who tries to get the dead to rise and enslave all of life.

Chaya | 6 comments No, that’s not it... it’s interesting how it has all of those details though

Autumn Francia | 66 comments You know, also I thought of Fablehaven. There are two kids however, major stuff mostly happens to the girl. her brother is younger than her, and they go to live with the grandpa and grandmother. it would have to be a mix of the series though because the towers arent mentioned until the 4th or 5th book. basically, the reason they can see magical creatures, or that magic happens is because their grandparents run a sanctuary for magical creatures, basically a haven. and then they only can see them when they drink magic milk. (until the fairies bless the girl that is) but other books it could also be:
Rose Rose by Holly Webb

Some Kind of Happiness Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand

Bayou Magic Bayou Magic by Jewell Parker Rhodes

Chaya | 6 comments No that’s not it either. The style is very different than fablehaven (I did read that too). The book I’m looking for isn’t set in the modern day world like we know it.

Chaya | 6 comments I think the main characters name (a girl) may have started with the letter ‘U’.

Autumn Francia | 66 comments The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen is a book where the girl goes to a town and meets her grandfather there, but the town is magical and the house etc. The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen

Chaya | 6 comments Nope... thanks for trying though.
Ok update- I’m racking my brain for more details and I think the main characters name sounded something like Unna Crate. I’m sorry, I wish I remembered more!

Chaya | 6 comments I found the book! Her name was Oona Crate. Apparently I had some of the details wrong. Thanks for your help!

Glad you found your books, Chaya. Here's the link - Oona Crate Mystery series by Shawn Thomas Odyssey. The first book is The Wizard of Dark Street.
