Damman Damman | 2 comments I'm looking for the name of a picture book that I had as a child. I think it's contemporary to when I was reading it, so the publish date should be around late 80's-early 90's.

Story bits that I can remember: The characters are animals. It takes place around a river bed or some similar body of water. A motherly animal (maybe an alligator?) leaves her den with a big weaved basket to collect fish and plants (all very colorful) to bring back. I'm pretty sure she sings a sweet song as she does it. The basket is always full to bursting when she returns. An outside character (can't remember the animal at all) comes across her nest and sees the haul she brings in. She tells him how she catches the fish by singing to them. He's greedy and mean, so he tries to go out with the basket and catch as many fish as the mother. Only, he sings a bad, insulting song to the fish so none of them get in his basket, leaving him empty handed.

Other: I remember the book using especially vibrant and bold colors, and the artwork spreading across whole pages. I think it was fairly popular at the time, but I can't seem to find it now.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here is a description from Kirkus:
Two elderly boars, Amabel and Nettie, reenact a well-worn folk-tale plot with a benign twist: Amabel, who thanks the bamboo tree that gives her fish and who sweetly tends the crocodile's baby, is rewarded with enough fish to share. The next day Nettle tries to reap the same benefits but is rude and ungrateful--and comes home with a basketful of scorpions and bats.
