Who's excited?

I want to go but have plans the entirety of the weekend. It looks like it'll be pretty, and I really want to support the director, Ava Duvernay

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I'll wait until it hits Netflix. I'm definitely interested to hear how you like it.

message 3: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'll wait until it's in the library. ;)
But it does look good.
Otoh, I've read the book more times than I've wanted to, for different classes etc. So I need it to be faithful to all the themes, but also as exciting and 'pretty' as the ads imply.

Yes and no. I'm excited because of the director + Oprah but...the trailers I've seen make me feel I need to re-read the book first. Did they change the sex of the MC?

No, it's a little girl and her littler brother. I think that part is the same :) I am really hoping it's good. The book was never a favorite of mine, but I'm really loving this trend in offering jobs to people who normally don't get this kind of budget and I really want Hollywood to know we're here for it!

message 6: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments I just read the book and wasn’t crazy about it but still going to check out the movie. I have a moviepass so I’ve been going to as many movies as possible.

message 7: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I'm not really interested in the movie at all. I never read the book (though I do own it) and it looks... whimsical. Which I'm not a huge fan of. So. I probably would not see it based on that.

BUT... I agree with this: "I'm really loving this trend in offering jobs to people who normally don't get this kind of budget and I really want Hollywood to know we're here for it!"

So maybe what I'll do is buy a ticket for AWIT and actually crash a different movie playing at the same time... but so AWIT gets the ticket sale. LOL

Bill, if you go please report back!

Love it, Becky!! There are a few organizations accepting donations so that kids who might not normally get the chance to go to the movies can see this one. Might be worth looking into as well, as I do agree the demographic for this appears to be a little younger than I think most of us :)

So, it's been a while but IICR the book was whimsical but science-whimsical. I clearly remember it was the place I learned that the shortest distance between two points was a straight line. (Hey! I started reading early in life!)

I think you could like it (says the me who hasn't re-read this in over 20 years).

Though I admit its the later books that really cemented my love of this series. I really want to re-read the book that focuses on the mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cells!).

Bill | 197 comments Allison wrote: "Bill, if you go please report back!"

Will do but it I will probably go a few weeks in to avoid any sort of crowd.

This movie should be appropriate for 4-5 year olds right? Maybe I’ll take my nieces.

Yes. I love seeing movies in theaters that do not have other people in them. :D

Yes! I remember seeing one on Nerdist. I just found it again for anyone else who is interested: https://nerdist.com/wrinkle-in-time-f...

Here's the site to donate directly: https://giveachildtheuniverse.com/ $10 = 1 ticket

I donated 2 tickets... which feels so small, but hopefully, for the two kids who get to see it on my dime, it will make their day. :)

THANK YOU FOR THE LINK!! And the donation! :D

message 14: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Sure thing :)

message 15: by Stevie (new)

Stevie Roach I think of all the words I could use to describe the book, "whimsical" would be one of the least appropriate. It is one of the deepest "children's" books I've read, and the sequels were more so. The trailer does make the movie look whimsical - which is why I don't plan to see it.

message 16: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments That's actually very good to hear, Steve. There's just something about whimsy that annoys me, so I tend to avoid it. Maybe I'll read the book and then decide. :)

message 17: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1222 comments I've just re-read the book in preparation. It reminded me of why I liked the series so much as a kid. Heroes who weren't typical, big questions, and deep thinking.

message 18: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (psramsey) | 393 comments It's odd - I remember reading AWiT as a child, probably more than once, and I remember liking it, but I have no recollection of the plot or characters. I guess that will make it all the more enjoyable when I see it this weekend.

message 19: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 365 comments Read the book recently and found it pretty 'meh' as an adult. Sorry, but going to a movie theater full of kids is definitely not my idea of fun.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments I think I'll wait for DVD for this one.

I'm kinda meh about the book, and while the visuals of the movie look cool, I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to spend the money to go out and see it.

I do like the ticket donation idea, though... but $10? Geez, kids. Go to a matinee! ;)

message 21: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments That is the matinee. LOL

message 22: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I thought the same thing, that it was pretty steep, and I was disappointed in AMC for not offering a deal on the tickets for charity purposes... but who knows, they might include popcorn and a drink or something, and movie theater concessions are EX-PEN-SIVE.

message 23: by AndrewP (new)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 365 comments Becky wrote: "That is the matinee. LOL"

The AMC Theatre I go to a 3D matinee ticket is only $9. Non 3D is $6.75

Damn! Matinees in the burbs here are $13 with surcharges and tax. I think there's a deal on Tuesdays...during school hours.

What Allison said! My tickets for BP were $20+ each.

The Matinee is $13.96 for adults and $12.31 for kids. WTF.

Bill | 197 comments Anyone else have moviepass? It’s $10 a month and you can see a movie a day if you want. Only limitations are you can only see standard films(no 3D or imax) and can only see each movie once.

I’ve been seeing a lot of movies that I otherwise wouldn’t want to pay for.

That's a crazy deal. How do they possibly make money on that?? Concessions I guess? Are there restrictions on when you can go see movies (ex. not opening weekend or something?)

I heard it's doing well but movie companies are pissed beyond belief. Some have declined to take part and others are actively trying to get rid of it.

I've thought about getting it for hubby. He loves movies. I do not. I'm just scared he'd try to make me go, too.

I think I'll get him a streaming service of some kind instead, lol.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments I just looked into it, and I don't like the fact that you can't prebook your tickets. I'm way too much of a planner to leave it to same day booking.

message 31: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments Yeah they aren’t associated with the movie theaters at all and like MrsJoseph said the movie companies are not happy. I don’t really understand why because Moviepass pays the full ticket cost.

I think they make money by selling the user data to the movie makers for marketing purposes. They are also trying to get the movie theaters to give them a cut of the concessions but that doesn’t seem likely.

Think Moviepass also hopes people will sign up and then not use it.

I’m not a planner at all so that doesn’t bother me much. I never have a problem getting a ticket when I go and have seen some big releases on opening day or weekend like Black Panther and The Last Jedi.

message 33: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Whoa. $13+ matinee is crazy. I went to see Annihilation the day after it came out, at 9pm, and paid $9 per ticket. And it was the NICER theater in my area. O_O

I shall never complain of ticket prices again.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments Yeah, my place is $7 for a matinee and I wasn't happy when that price went up, but now I guess I'll be glad I'm not in other places!

message 35: by Bill (new)

Bill | 197 comments Standard non-matinee film in my area is $15.50. Think the matinee is in the $11 range.

Y'all got under $10 ticket prices???!?!?!?!?!?!?

message 37: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Sooooo... I guess that the $10/ticket isn't such a rip-off after all, Colleen. We're just super lucky to live in areas where you can see a movie without having to take out a second mortgage. LOL

Ashley in Wonderland (whotellsyourstory) | 261 comments This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I'm definitely excited to see this. I didn't feel like the old movie did it much justice. But, I'm sure we'll wait till it's in the Redbox or streaming somewhere. We go to the theater maybe 2-3 times a year and this isn't a movie the whole family is excited about. I'd like to reread it before I see it too.

So, I did manage to see it! It was...cute. Fine for kids. But not the breathtaking magical adventure I wanted it to be. Super glad to see it right behind Black Panther, though! Message sent, at the very least.

Kristin B. Bodreau (krissy22247) | 726 comments Every year for their birthdays, I take out my little sisters. This year my youngest sister is turning 18. She requested that I take her to see this. She's too cute for words.

In preparation I read the book, since I never read it as a kid. Possibly unpopular opinion, but I really didn't like the book. So I'm kind of hoping the movie is a lot different. We'll see this weekend when I take my sister.

Mareike | 1457 comments I finally saw this movie today and I was utterly captivated and very, very deeply moved. (I guess I can scratch "crying on an airplane" off my bucket list now.)

I wish someone had given younger me the book(s) this movie is based on.

Somehow, I only saw this now....
I loved it. To be fair, I was already in an emotionally raw state when I watched it, and I'm generally "nah am Wasser gebaut" ("built close to the water's edge") as we would say in German, so I'm maybe not the best yardstick. Still, the movie was incredibly powerful.
