My favourite book so far this year!
This is "Day of the Triffids' for kids (and I loved "Triffids"). Gripping and suspenseful, but with a lovely kind hearted protaginist, Ade. Technically a Sci Fi, it is also part Horror and part Survival story, with a heart warming theme of what people will do for others when circumstances are dire. This book ticks all my boxes! Short and exciting chapters means it would make a great read aloud I think.
Highly recommended.

I haven't read this one yet but I've had several kids recommend it to me. The author's second novel was in the Standing Orders last year - Fly Me Home.

Ah ha! Thanks for that Zac. I hadn't put two and two together there and didn't realise that I had actually read this author's other book last year. Well, I must confess I didn't finish "Fly Me Home" - it just wasn't doing it for me. Loved this one though.
