Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 255 comments I have another request today, but I don't have as much information about this one.

What I can tell is that the book was probably written in the 80's or 90's and had a mint(?) cover, it was definitely a green cover and I think it might've been a paperback. I read it back in 2009-2010 when I lived in Mississippi, I got it from the public library.

The book was set in America and I think the cover had a drawing of the main girl on it, really retro-looking. I think she had brown hair? The book took place in the same era it was written in.

The basic plot concerned her being moved to a kind of special-ed class that was meant for people who couldn't keep up with the usual pace of classes and needed things taught at a slower pace. At first she really hates the idea because she's afraid people will make fun of her, but as time goes on she learns to love the class and makes friends there. I think she was in 10th or 11th grade.

A vivid memory I have is of the first chapter, when she's lying sick in bed with a stomach bug. Despite being sick, she eats a lunch of apple juice and gummy worms as she listens to either her teacher or principal arrive at her house and talk to her mom about moving her to the other class. The main character asks herself 'being smart in a dumb class or dumb in a smart class, what's the difference?' and then throws up. The next day she goes back to school.

I know it's not much to go off of, but I've heard of books with even less information being found so I have high hopes for this one!

Elizabeth...
You can bump your book every month or so. This keeps your book towards the top of the Unsolved Folder where more people are likely to see you query. It's better than being on page 27.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 255 comments I forgot I even posted this honestly XP

Sahara Special doesn’t exactly fit, but some parts are similar. Sorry that I can’t help more, lol.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 255 comments Don't think it's it, but it does sound familiar and I feel like I've probably read it around the same time I read this one, haha.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 255 comments Nope, I read the preview for the first chapter and even though I've read this book too, this isn't what I'm looking for. Thank you though!

Julai | 31 comments This sort of rings a bell with me... I remember a scene in the book where she goes to the class for the first time and they're looking at posters of "Mr. d and Mr. b" and she thinks it's dumb that they have to have posters to know the difference.... If this is the same book I definitely read it but don't remember the title either!

They changed the rules. You need to sign in to Librarything.com to run a tagmash search.

bookel | 4018 comments Don't know if details fit. If not, another for the elimination list. Searched disabilities juvenile fiction book English on worldcat.org while looking for a different book.

Allison (alianora) | 105 comments This sounds SO familiar.

Weird thought, but the first one I had that featured a teenager sent to special class who hates everything at first is I Never Asked You to Understand Me. The cover featured is not the cover I remember - the one I remember sounds more like what you described.

Elizabeth ♛Smart Girls Love Trashy Books♛ (pinkhairedwannabe) | 255 comments Bump, it doesn't look like any of those. But now I'm thinking it's a Barbara Declements book? I don't know but somehow I get that feeling. And if not her it's definitely an author like her; a female author who became popular in the 80's/90's for writing about teenage school drama

Just throwing this one out there: But I'm Ready To Go

Ann | 530 comments I know it's already been ruled out, but I can't help thinking of Sixth Grade Can Really Kill You by Barthe DeClements. I remember the main character Helen having brown hair and overhearing her parents arguing about enrolling her in a special class. I also remember her getting a stomach bug and throwing up.

If anything else comes to mind though, I'll be sure to post.
Hope you find your book!

Libby | 3 comments Was the girl double jointed?? This strikes some v e r y familiar chords for me. I remember the cover being either white or blue, and the girl being on it, like you said.

However, google search isn't returning anything for me!

No, I don’t really recall anything about that.

Yes, this is it! I went back and reread a detailed review/summary on a review blog and they mentioned other scenes I remembered; her spraypainting the school and going shopping with her uncle. They also mentioned the stomach bug scene. So yes, this is actually the book I’ve been looking for!
