Soo, this is a Teen Harlequin novel and reading the first several chapters does feel rather like reading a harlequin -- slightly over-the-top setting, stock characters, hyper-flowery names and so on. As such, I'm adjusting my expectations a bit.

The writing feels a little choppy so some bits are a touch confusing. I'm assuming there's supposed to be a love interest here somewhere, but at the time I haven't found it. Unless it's supposed to be (view spoiler)[Enne and Levi... which would be honestly laughable. Still it's mildly interesting at the moment. Curious to know what actually happened to Lourdes, and how this search is going to go forward with someone as ridiculously unprepared as Enne for a city as overabundantly depraved as New Reynes appears to be. Enne (17%) - I haven't read any Harlequin novels that I know of, so I don't really have any expectations. (view spoiler)[ So far the only thing that is bothering (? not sure if that is the right choice of word?) me is the age of the characters. Levi is a crime lord at 17 and evidently built up to that role from age 12? Really? come on.
And I suppose Enne could be 17, but she behaves 30. I also don't like how cold and emotionless she is. I get that she is trying to project that outwardly, but even her internal dialogue is flat.

I am intrigued by how Vianca can openly flaunt her obsession with the Mizers, but anyone else so much as whispers about them and they get killed. Also, how did Levi end up working for her? I assume we are about to get the story. As for Lourdes, that situation just seems weird so far. (hide spoiler)]

To Day Five

So there are actually some very good things about this book; unfortunately, that doesn't seem to make it more enjoyable for me. It has an almost 1920's vibe -- smoky casinos, gambling, crime lords and gangs fighting for control of the underside of a city. Part of me would have liked to see it actually set then as more a historical story -- maybe even a historical fantasy, but all that on top of building a completely new world is a lot to keep up with.

I do think (view spoiler)[ that Levi and Enne are handled nicely in that they aren't insta-lovey at all. In fact, I'm not actually sure the book is going to go there with them. Bi rep does appear to be included.

Enne, however, has become a little too special. And it's actually not because she's turned out to have a very different heritage than she thought. It's more because she's grown up bred to be a lady with rather prudish sensibilities and she comes to the City of Sin and suddenly all bets are off. Not only are they off but she's frighteningly GOOD at managing herself. That might work if it was her talent, but it isn't so she's just that special. The whole deal with the blood gazer and the fight... her walking away from that was just a little over the top for me. (hide spoiler)]

So, jury's still out but I'm not in love with this book the way I wanted to be.

I am surprised that Vianca gave Levi half the money. I was starting to believe that she was actually scamming Levi out of the money this whole time and didn't care two cents about him, but she seemed genuinely upset that he was being threatened. She is too old to be in love with him, so I wonder what her real connection with him is. (hide spoiler)]
End of Day Eight - (view spoiler)[ I'm still a little confused about a few things - first, how is it that Sedric has all this power? I get that he is a crime lord and all, but if he really has the power of the Shadow Game, why is he bothering to send hit men to kill Reymond and Jac? Second, Levi's glass powers with relation to the orbs - he can just make the glass, right? Not fill it with volts? And what the heck are volts exactly? The way Levi can hear them makes it sound like they are dead people's souls or something similar. So does that mean this entire society trades in dead people? Do they just murder whoever they want to get the volts? (hide spoiler)]
Finished - It turned out better than I thought. (view spoiler)[ I liked certain aspects of the story - Enne being a lost heir, both she and Levi being cursed with the same curse yet paired up to work through things together. I even like their budding romance. The Shadow Game itself was a little lame. I also thought there was an awful lot of graphic murder and killing for a "teen" book. And, I think there are several elements of the world-building and story that I should understand at this point, but don't - like what volts are, Mizers evidently have the power to put the volts into the orbs but where do they get the volts (especially if they are souls like I am theorizing), and how did the Mizers manage to get slaughtered in the first place if they were so powerful? I would have liked a little more explanation. However, the story did manage to hook me. I am interested in finding out what happens to Levi and Enne in the future. Will she be able to hide her eyes/power? Will she and Levi ever get free of Vianca's omerta? Is Lourdes really dead (I don't think she is)? And is it Enne's destiny to regain the throne and lead? So the fake cursing is kind of getting on my nerves. Usually fake profanity doesn't actually bother me, but it's so overused, I'm getting a touch annoyed.

I still kind of think there are too many people, too many gangs and too much going on. And I'm pretty sure I'm (view spoiler)[not even a little convinced that Lourdes is dead. No proof. Not buying it. (hide spoiler)]

The whole volts thing is confusing to me too. Obviously it's (view spoiler)[ their currency but I think it's supposed to be electricity that they capture in an orb or keep in their skin. Now the black orbs from the bank and that Zula had are supposedly filled with life essence... I guess one of them contains Enne's own, which makes zero sense to me. Does that mean she can't die while it's intact? If something happens it it, then she just keels over? How is she up and walking around while her life essence is in an orb? That whole thing was just weird. Most of it is weird. I don't hate it but I'm not married to it either (hide spoiler)]

Sorry, not buying it. I agree... Vianca is (view spoiler)[ NOT in love with Levi the way we generally think of In Love. I don't care what Enne thinks she saw. The most I could buy is in some twisted (really kind of gross) way, he's like a son. Do Not believe she's in love with a what ... nineteen year old boy?

Sigh... and Levi's an IDIOT. Stupid gambler.

I have to say, while I'm not fond of how grisly this book turned (ew), I kind of like that Enne and Lola have become friends, even if they'd never admit it. I like Lola; she's a pretty great character I think. I should also say that even though I've had trouble suspending disbelief over Enne's astonishingly fast transition into street lord, complete apparently with all the skills necessary to be one, it is kind of fun to read about her being such a badass.

So... you're right. It turned out better than I expected. Partly probably because I forced myself to read almost half of it in a sitting. Gotta get the flow going. I actually liked the shadow game. It wasn't what I was expecting at all, but I thought it was kind of neat. To me the curse was really confusing -- where did that come from and why do they both have it? And why didn't Enne get her life force back out of that orb that is supposedly hers?

I definitely agree it got too graphic. I think it was worse than Maze Runner, and definitely worse than the Hunger Games. The last chapters kind of turned my stomach, which doesn't seem necessary to me, particularly in, as you say, a teen book. Definitely felt the worldbuilding was not ideal. She obviously has a very good idea of it, but I don't think it was communicated as well as it could have been. (hide spoiler)] Oh well... I might possibly be intrigued enough to read the next one. Maybe.

I agree about everything you said. I liked the relationship that blossomed between Enne and Lola. And it did get graphic, though I'm not sure if it was better or worse than Hunger Games. I seem to recall it was pretty awful.

The Hunger Games was brutal but I don't recall it being graphic, if you know what I mean. Young people killing each other felt so new to YA when that book came out that just the fact it was happening seemed to shock everyone. I think Mockingjay was really dark, and I'm not saying the Hunger Games wasn't violent because it was, but it's rare for a book's violence to get to me. I only recall that happening two other times; one in The Kill Order and once in Stephen Lawhead's Byzantium... which was a great book but there's an incredibly gruesome scene in it of a character getting literally ripped apart. The end-ish scenes of Ace of Shades reminded me of those; I don't recall anything in the Hunger Games that bothered me nearly so vividly. But I'm probably overdue to go back and reread those books too.

The image in my head of this world is so weird though, it's like halfway between Las Vegas and Victorian London which doesn't make much sense.

So is Enne supposed to be a badass now or not? She's been so competent for the last week, it's ridiculous that she would make such an obvious mistake by this point. Even if she really did have him fooled, she should have suspected that the drink was spiked, that's common sense, especially after she just got done lecturing Vianca about how slimy Sedric is.

The rest of ending better be good, because I've gone from really enjoying this book to rolling my eyes in the space of like 20 pages. (hide spoiler)]

I liked the writing style I guess, I found it very easy to read, and I liked that the romance isn't being rushed. Feels a bit off that romance is the one thing that still seems to be a dealbreaker for her when she's perfectly ok with shooting someone in the face but I'm not here to judge, it's like the one part of her character development that I actually do buy and think is well paced. (view spoiler)[ It's funny you say that, because I was thinking A Darker Shade of Magic mixed with Caraval even though I can't pinpoint why exactly I'm getting Caraval vibes. But Six of Crows also crossed my mind. Amanda Foody said the world is inspired by Atlantic City, but when I think of Atlantic City I just imagine those busses that shuttle the old people there for their weekend vacations lol

So far I'm not really connecting with the characters or the story. I feel like the author is spending so much time building up a hate to love romance instead of the plot and magic system. Like she keeps mentioning how much they "don't like each other" despite being attracted to one another, as if we need to hear that 17 times before she actually gets around to how volts work, etc. Daughter of the Burning City was written in the same manner and that book was a let down for me, so I think I just don't love her writing style.

I am intrigued by the omerta and Vianca in general. She seems like a very interesting villain. But I kinda don't care about her missing mom 😐😊

(view spoiler)[The romancey stuff actually didn't bother me at all in this book tbh, I've gotten so used to reading rushed/unneeded romances and instalove that my standards are pretty low at this point 😂

I guess it resembles Caraval because both are about a very sheltered girl brought up to be a proper lady who goes to this exciting but dangerous city and meets a guy who's involved with the city and they spend most of the book searching for a family member, etc. And there are even more similarities if you take Legendary into consideration. Agreed on the dodgy character development. Enne would change drastically in some aspects and in others would still act so young, pretty much when it was convenient for the plot. I got a little confused during the climax of the book... maybe it was just me but the timeline seemed kinda wonky when they got to Torren's casino.

I don't believe that Lourdes is dead. I expected an epilogue that would touch on that, since it just seems like with two more books they'd find a way to put her in there. Unless she is the woman who was with Vianca's son? Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I won't be picking those up in the future. The world building just isn't for me, and I also don't care for Enne that much. I like Levi and Jac but probably not enough to continue the series.

I thought about doing the same, but there's something about her world building that I don't connect with. Like the volts and orbs and having a main and secondary talent, etc... it's just not for me. It's funny that this book reminded me of A Darker Shade of Magic, because Victoria Schwab is my favorite author and I think she's so creative and her ideas just click with me. But this one is similar and I'm not into it.
