How hipster are you? Test

This reads pretty complicated... I think it would be better if you asked people for a bunch of stats:
1a) Books read/recorded (including DNF):
2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings (including DNF):
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars:
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how ofter you agreed with the masses:
3a) Books read with under 1000 ratings (excluding DNF):
3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%:
Unpopular makes the book sound bad... usually these are indie or emerging authors that don't have much of a fanbase yet...

You can do all this from your shelves page, if you enable num ratings and sort in ascending/descending order... it's still more work the more you read...

That doesn't tell you how many ratings the book has. You have to actually click into each book for that. You can only sort by your rating, not see how many ratings in general are on that book.

That book is overrated. (Now everyone comes and stones me)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the first... I also just learned you can basically play roulette with the website if you want
booklinks that end in /show/######## work for any number between 1 and 33 million or so... eveything after the book number is optional...
Usually it goes /show/########.[Book_Name}
OR
/show/########.[Book_Name]__[Series_Name]__[Book_#]_

1a) Books read/recorded (including DNF): 1489
2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings (including DNF): 76 (5.1%)
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars: 61 (I rate high)
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how ofter you agreed with the masses: 80.26%
3a) Books read with under 1000 ratings (excluding DNF): 185
3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%: 12.42%
To make me feel better:
4) Adjusted Hipster Rating (2c - 3b): 67.84%

My numbers don't track DNF very well, since most are uncatalogued... and those that are are on an exclusive shelf... it's close enough for now...

Really interesting test! I'm super curious to see what my stats are. But I'm in the same boat of having too many on the shelves to click through. If someone knows an easier way lmk.
Highly rated titles I'd say I'm probably at 75% with 4 stars or higher. I tend not to pick up the hyped ones unless I've don't research and decided I'm likely going to enjoy it. To me, hype itself is a little off putting, especially when it's from people who don't read a lot. I stick to my peep's opinions.
Lower rated is likely a lot higher. Like 90% or something. I don't read self pub, so if I'm reading a little-rated title, it's probably a continuation to a series I already know I'm going to like before picking up. There's a chance first in series experiments would knock my stat down, but I imagine those always get more ratings.

You're right. I stand corrected. I didn't know that was an option. In that case this wouldn't be so hard to do.
It was interesting seeing what books barely missed the cut:
Dead Witch Walking has 99,500 ratings...
This would have been much harder if we didn't get to ignore books with 1001 to 99,999 ratings... the majority of books fall into this category... 82.5% of my considerable shelves...
@Diana: Goodreads has so many hidden options... and most of them aren't very useful...
The best one I found recently, helping Laura, was the ability view books on 2+ shelves at once... there's a button at the bottom of your shelf list that puts a plus sign next to each shelf to add it to your search...
Here is every 5-star sf-fantasy book I read in 2017: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I came up with another way to determine if you’re hipster, but you’ve probably never heard of it 😁
I have only been on Goodreads for some months so I haven't recorded that many books...
1a) Books read/recorded : 448
2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings : 131 (29.2%)
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars: 90
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how ofter you agreed with the masses: 68.7%
3a) Books read with under 1000 ratings (I have a good num in TBR): 11
3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%: 2.5%
4) Adjusted Hipster Rating (2c - 3b): 66.2%

I think I get the joke. Which is actually rare for me))"
I totally didn't get it until you posted. Then I had to reread it twice before I got it. That flew way over my head lol

2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings (including DNF): 73
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars: 35
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how ofter you agreed with the masses: 47.9%
3a) Books read with under 1000 ratings (excluding DNF): 28
3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%: 11.8%
4) Adjusted Hipster Rating (2c - 3b): 36.1%
Those stats are probably not very accurate 'cause I joined GR in 2016. I'm only adding books I read previously as I spot them and often don't rate ('cause I don't remember the book well enough).

2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings : 201 (19.5%)
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars: 154
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how ofter you agreed with the masses: 76.6%

3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%: 16.2%
4) Adjusted Hipster Rating (2c - 3b): 60.4%
I lived in Brooklyn for 9 years so I think I automatically win.
So far, I think I'm winning, because I'm so generous with my ratings... I consider Virginie the winner so far, tho, since she's the LEAST hipster among us...

I think I'm the least hipster. I started the test and gave up when it was obvious how very embarrassingly unhipster I was.
1a) Books read/recorded : 1322
2a) Books tried with over 100k ratings : 27 (2%)
2b) Books read with over 100k ratings that you rated 4-5 stars: 21
2c) % of a hipster you are [(2b / 2a) x 100]% = how often you agreed with the masses: 77%
I don't think my sample size is sufficient for the top half. I mean, half of those were harry potter books and LOTR.
3a) Books read with under 1000 ratings: 89 (65 of which were rated 4+ @ 73%)
3b) How often you read lesser known books [(3a / 1a) x100]%: 7%
4) Adjusted Hipster Rating (2c - 3b): .70%
Overall, with a 77% and 73% approval rating for either category, that tells me that I'm consistently judging books, regardless of how popular they are.
Also, with only 2% of my reads being in the highly rated, it's clear I'm not swayed for what to read by the masses. Booya.

Many of the books that contributed to my score were things like HP, Stephen King, and classics. I also don't have a big sample set. I think it will be fun to redo this annually or something and see how the numbers change.

My popular reads:
Harry Potter (as-a-kid)
Fault in Our Stars (movie came out and I was curious)
Mortal Instruments (tire-replacement pre-Kindle, Walmart bookshelf)
John Grisham thrillers (as-a-kid)
Roald Dahl (as-a-kid)
Sookie Stackhouse (who knew?)
Stephanie Plum (looking for an In Death replacement series)
Artemis Fowl (another curiosity... my younger brother read these as a kid)
Good Omens
Narnia (as-a-kid)
Mistborn
Black Dagger Brotherhood
Dresden Files
Odd Thomas
Jack Reacher
Stormlight Archives
Kay Scarpetta (tried after Stephanie Plum)
Wheel of Time
Magicians trilogy
Wheel of Time
Farseer Trilogy
Left Behind (as-a-kid)
Michael Connelly
On Dublin Street (romance)
Gentleman Bastard
Wallbanger (romance, first I later found out was somehow a Twilight fanfic)
Mercy Thompson
Chelsea Handler's memoirs
In Death
Fever
Wool Omnibus
Anita Blake (1 star)
Night Huntress
First Law
Dark Matter
Reckoners
Most of this list is popular kids books, Buddy Reads, or the result of me looking for a specific type of book...
Dark Matter is probably the most "hipster" book I read... everybody was reading it last summer... including my growing friends list...

I can imagine. I have books that I've rated right after reading and then had to change it after I finished the series or I let the book sit with me for a while.

Iain pointed out a way to sort so you don't have to get to in depth with it. On the desktop version go to your read shelf. There's a settings button at the top you can click to add number of ratings to each book on the list. Then you sort by that. I think it took me under 5 min from start to finish to come up with my stats.

I'm looking at some 5 star books and am thinking they're 3 stars at best. If anything I think this thread has inspired me to go through and rerate some of these.
For sure. I read a lot of meh titles but gave them 4 stars. I wish I'd had my current reviewing system all along.

Yup. I think when I get home I'll try to do this just for my 2016-2018 books. I think my more recent reviews were more true to me.

3c) Books read with <1k ratings and 4/5 stars: 64
3d) Percentage of preference for lesser-numer of ratings books= 57%
...wow the amount of >100k books was way lower than I thought it would be. Also a lot of those <1k books are obscure comics, so that may have shifted the numbers a bit.

Since she has the lowest percentage, doesn't that mean she is the MOST hipster by this calculation, since she agrees with the masses less?
Although Niki, with only 2% of her books over 100,000, and Sha, with 36% of her books less than 1000 are pretty hipster in my book.

I've never tried this before. How cool.
I love how the first books after Harry Potter are Hitchhikers Guide, and then randomly number 22 is Bill Bryson's African Diary. Like... 22~29 are all these Bill Bryson books I've never heard of before LOTR comes in at number 30.

Oh, same here. I likewise have felt the need to revise my older ratings. I'd give a book 5 stars directly after finishing it that may only be worth 3 or 4. Completion euphoria resulted in a glowing review that later on makes me squint in embarrassment.

I dunno how hipster I am. Basically, I've read a bunch of popular books, but I rate on the lower end. I have a bunch of books under 1000, but that's skewed by Japanese books and manga I think. *shrug*

Noooo, don't say that! 😭
Maybe someone with superior math skillz could help out, as these tests are not definitive enough, I think.
Popular books:
1) Count number of books with over 100K ratings that you have read AND gave 4 or 5 stars to.
2) Count number of books with over 100k ratings that you have read. DNF counts as read.
3) Divide number 1) by number 2) and multiply by 100%. Post result as percentage.
Unpopular books:
1) Count number of books with under 1000 ratings that you have read. DNF does NOT count as read.
2) Divide number 1) by total number of books read, and multiply by 100%. Post result as percentage.
**Will post my result later. because reasons.
