July 2014's BOM!
Discuss all of the massive, hair-raising adventures here!

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments I haven't read the series yet but I have been catching it on Cartoon Network now and then. I like that the Omnibus for the book is massive. It's like one of those comic size manga for the combined price of the books within. :)

I've seen a couple of episodes of this. I have to say, I probably won't be reading this. It's way out of what I normally read, and from what I saw, there wasn't enough of a story for me to latch onto. But I'm picking, I tend to like the corky, upbeat ones.

message 4: by E. (new)

E. (dilawrosas) | 20 comments Well, I had read some of the chapters and watching the anime. The manga style is not "pretty" and the main male protagonist gets on my nerves. I do like the anime opening song. For the most part, I will probably just use Wiki to learn more of the series.

message 5: by Amber (new)

Amber (undeadangel) | 46 comments It's definitely not a pretty manga/anime as it pretty much falls into the horror genre, so you end up seeing a lot of blood and death. Definitely not for everyone, especially if you prefer more lighthearted stories - AoT is a lot more intense. I personally really enjoyed the story-line and the characters, even the main protagonist. The kid certainly has a chip on his shoulder, but it's understandable given all that he has been through and will go through before it's over. You never know who is going to die next so if you're the type to get attached to characters, it can end up being pretty depressing when the characters you've grown a liking for suddenly dies a brutal death. But that intensity and the never knowing what will happen next makes it all the more interesting because it's so shocking and emotional. You really don't even need to know the origins of the Titans, because part of the fun is trying to figure it out. The people in the story don't know where they come from either, so you're learning slowly about them while the characters themselves learn more about their mysterious appearance.

message 6: by E. (last edited Jul 27, 2014 08:48PM) (new)

E. (dilawrosas) | 20 comments I think that the main protagonist won't die right now. Nor do I want his foster sister to die. For the most part, the three friends will be alive for some time. They are too critical to the whole series. Include that with the princess, who may or may not die right now. That's all that I think will be alive for some time. Not sure of the rest, though.

message 7: by Josiane (new)

Josiane Claremont | 15 comments I just started reading it. I think the plot is SO addicting, but the art makes me nauseous. Very. BUT SO GOOD.

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments I've been watching it and it seems as if during this struggle the titans are physically and mentally evolving but most of the titans are still as dumb as a sack of rocks but something tells me that what is in that cellar is a whole bunch of potions that will allow the humans to grow to titan size or there is going to be a machine down there or some kind of artifact that was creating the titans all along and who ever created it meant for the titans to help but it went wrong and instead of helping it well created what the titans are now gigantic man-eating monsters and along with the rest of humanity suffers the consequence of playing God

Whoa whoa whoa.... I see too many "I probably won't read it"s up there.

Guys... YOU HAVE TO READ IT!!!!!!!!!

I try not to be too picky with my mangas because more often then not I'll read the description of a series and be like "That sounds stupid" and read it and love it... or vice versa. When Attack on Titan won for our BoM read, I checked out the description (for some reason I had missed the memo this series existed and was so popular) and was like "Meh, it doesn't seem too interesting, I'm not going to read it." Then about a day later I went "Wait a minute Teresa, remember, don't be too hasty to pass it off." So I decided to check it out... and OH MY GOD IT'S AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Are you doubting my truth on how amazing it is? It's so amazing that even my MOTHER thinks it's awesome (yup, and I'm 29 years old).

First, the manga is 284729875982374354847984769834798237483628757498598 times better than the anime. If you're enjoying the anime, then I seriously suggest the manga. The art is intense and so interesting to look at. The titans look creepy and gross. And this manga is graphic. For real. Like possible stomach squirming graphic. But this is why I love it so much. The story is super awesome, the artwork fits perfect with the story, it's graphic and in your face, and the good guys aren't always winning (which I LOOOOOOOVE). I love how realistic this manga is. Not that I think titans could be real, but how humanity is dealing with this epidemic is entirely real. I really love how hard it is for people to fight and defeat the titans, and they just aren't always succeeding because "they're the good guys, they are supposed to win." Even Titan Eren, who appeared invincible at first, isn't always winning.

I find I thrive on the threat of the titans. There were a couple of back story volumes I was kind of like "Yeah yeah okay, get on with it." The volumes where they are dealing with the titans are my favorite. Volume 2 and volume 12 are AMAZING!! The intensity and never knowing what exactly is going to happen makes this series even more exciting. And for some reason, whenever I seem to bring up a question (like how did they not see the colossus titan approaching in the distance that second time he showed up when they were on top of the wall) always seemed to be answered (the answer to that was that he could appear and disappear like that). And even when I'm left with a million questions (like I was at the end of volume 12) I don't even care because the series is so fricken amazing! Haha!

There is one slight problem I'm having with it now, though I have a very deep suspicion that Isayama-sama will have some really awesome, bad ass reason for it... I don't really like how so many people are suddenly capable of what I call "titaning-out." It was so much cooler when it was just Eren. More and more though it seems like everyone can titan-out... and I really just don't want it to be that way.

Plus, Eren's titan form is so bad ass it hurts!! The rest... meh... not too impressed :-p

I absolutely love this series. I am constantly gasping out loud, shouting things like "Yes!" or "Guuuurl!" or "OH MY GOD!" out while I'm reading. It has been a long time since I have been so excited about a series. I am dying for the rest of the volumes to come out... but to quench my AoT thirst while I wait, I've been watching the anime on Toonami Saturday nights. The anime is alright, the manga is amazing!

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments I haven't read the manga but I like the show I watch it with my older brother every Saturday and I would like to read it but I can't find it at the book store I shop at but I don't mind because the show is interesting enough I just hope Hollywood doesn't try to make a movie of it knowing them they would mess up big time making me want to rip them limb from limb again

K.C. I hope you can get your hands on the books. Check your local library. The books are a million times better than the anime! Amazon.com is another great resource for getting manga (that's where, when I buy, I buy mine. Though I use the library to get my hands on most manga... but I'm definitely going to be buying Attack on Titan!)

Elif K. | 10 comments I love the series >.<
And Levi is such a cool guy :D

message 13: by k.c.(Kthinker) (new)

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments eh levi is to serious for no reason known and he doesn't really show any emotion not even a little which impairs the ability for the character to show at least some of his personality which makes any part of the story that is supposed to show part or all of his personality lacking

message 14: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
I have to disagree. I think Levi is a great character for that reason. I like that there is at least one person who isn't affected by the titans. Levi is a hard-ass who knows the truths of the world, and in my opinion, he accepts them and makes due with what he can. I love that he is essentially fearless. He does what he's supposed to do and does it well. There is a lot to Levi that we don't know, but a little mystery about a character is always great.

I do, however, think his English voice is stupid and doesn't fit him at all... but what can you do? :p Lol

message 15: by k.c.(Kthinker) (new)

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments true making a character with a mysterious past does make them more interesting and the character has given some good advice to Aron but he doesn't show much personality which really effects the general character badly by making him seem less human then again that could be the effect of a titan attack and maybe his family was eaten by titans right in front of his eyes when he was little and he was lucky enuf to escape or get rescued by a guard and now he is afraid to show his feelings and/ or get attached to anyone because of that

message 16: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (last edited Sep 24, 2014 12:20PM) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
There could be any number of reasons Levi stays closed up. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with a character not letting readers in. Not all characters need to wear their hearts on their sleeves. And keep in mind personalities come in different shapes and sizes. Maybe the way Levi is IS his personality. Just because he seems more cold doesn't mean he doesn't have a personality. I think Levi has plenty of personality. Usually people who can't have a single thought of their own and who just do as their told are ones with very little personality. I think Levi is the complete opposite of that.

message 17: by k.c.(Kthinker) (new)

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments true but my gut tells me there is more maybe he had the same experience Aron did when he was little OR MAYBE His FATHER is A GENERAL OF SOME SORT AND THAT WAS JUST HOW HE WAS RAISED (sorry about the all caps thing I didn't realize caps lock was still on)

message 18: by k.c.(Kthinker) (new)

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments I'm surprised that no one has been talking about attack on titan lately it is getting kinda of boring being the only one who really talks about it in this group

message 19: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
Well, maybe people don't have much more to say. That's fine too. As the 13th volume just came out, there isn't much more to talk about until new material comes out.

message 20: by k.c.(Kthinker) (new)

k.c.(Kthinker) | 83 comments hmmm I guess you're right but I usually watch the series and usually when I check back here to see what people have said I usually find that at least one person has said something new so I'm not used to the silence

Don't expect threads to go on and on. At some point, people share what they want to share and move on to the next. It's natural for that to happen. But you could always try to spark some conversations :)

message 23: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I have not read the manga but I recently started watching the anime. It is definitely entertaining so far, & eventually I hope to get around to reading the manga. My current to read manga list is so out of control right now.

message 24: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
I hear you Ash on the to-read list being out of control, but I'd definitely recommend putting Attack on Titan at the top of it. The manga is about 1000000 times better than the anime. And currently over 13 volumes are out. It is awesome, and I bet you'd read through theme pretty quickly because you aren't going to want to put them down!

message 25: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments Arghhh! You just had to tell me that! Although I love both anime & manga, I am more of a reader, & I almost always find the manga is better than the anime. Tht's exactly the kind of manga I lime to read as well, the ones I never want to put down. Alright, I'm trusting you here, & will move it to the top of my list.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, I'm already looking forward to reading the series. :)

Waaahooo!! I can't wait to hear your thoughts after it!! I almost didn't even read it cuz I was like "This isn't going to be interesting" and whoa... now I love it and plan to buy the whole series! Now I am waiting not-so-patiently for the whole thing to come out so I can finally read it all (I won't read anything passed volume 10 now. I'll wait for the entire series to be out and then read it all together). It's probably going to take a couple years, so it's going to be a tortuous wait but it'll be awesome when I can read it all!!

message 27: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I am counting on you to listen & respond to my thoughts about it. If you like it asmuch as you obviously do, & it is indeed that good, it will be fun to discuss it w/each other. I felt that way after I read xxxHolic, I lived it so much I wanted to discuss it w/everyone & anyone. Pandora Hearts is another series I am completely in love with, & I am constantly checking for updates/latest chapters.

message 28: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments Sorry about my typos, sometimes they are just ridiculous.

message 29: by E. (new)

E. (dilawrosas) | 20 comments I like the manga better than the anime. But the anime does have its good points. I just prefer the manga better.

message 30: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I read the first three chapters about an hour ago. I have no doubt it will be great, but three chapters aren't nearly enough to even begin with a great story like this one. I normally prefer manga over anime in general, but I do love both. I'm just more of a reader, period.

message 31: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
Yes Ash! I'd love to discuss it with you!!

message 32: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments You better! You did manage to get me to push it to the top of a very long TBR list. For some reason I am trusting u on this one. Btw, did I see on your profile u r a Big Time Rush fan? I am way too old for that show, but when it first came out I watched it all the time. It's oddly addictive.

message 33: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
Yes!! I am a HUGE Big Time Rush fan!! And trust me, I'd be considered "way too old" for that show too but it was so hilarious!! I've been rewatching it on Amazon Prime lately. Oh man... I wish it was still on!

message 34: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I knew we had a bond somehow. That show was great. Thats so funny we both like it, lol.

message 35: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments OMG, there's a Big Time Rush fan club/group on goodreads? Did u start it? It looks like it hasn't been active in awhile, should I join?

message 36: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
There is and I think I'm part of it. I didn't start it but yeah, I don't think anyone does anything in it. Doesn't mean you can't join it and try to revive it ;)

message 37: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I just think it's awesome they actually have a group. I still watch it every once in awhile on Teen Nick. Something about that show was so entertaining.

message 38: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I just finished the 4th chapter. I really need to find out if my libtary carries this series b/c I am way too broke to purchase them any time soon. I looked at just about every site out there where you can read different manga series &I finally found it on some lesser known site. Unfortunately, the pages turn extremely slow & this is obviously a series I want to read fast.

message 39: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
It's super popular so I'd be surprised if your library didn't carry it. That's how I read the whole series, though now I plan to buy it!

message 40: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments I can't wait until I get further along in the story so we can really discuss it.

message 41: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments Alright Queen Diva, I requested the rest of Attack on Titan series from the Library yesterday. Hopefully it will not be a painfully slow wait. Thanks again for the reccomendation. The anime alone is addictive but you are right, the manga is even better. I usually find this to be true in most cases of anime/manga series. As much as I love anime, I'm more of a reader in general.

message 42: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
Woot!! Oh man, volumes 2 and 12 were my favorite!! I was practically tearing the pages out I was turning them so fast!! Hahaha!! But yes, the manga is way better. I also love the artwork... it's creepy and the titans are gross. I love it! I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying it!

message 43: by Ash (new)

Ash | 25 comments Ok, so I finished Vol. 7 a few weeks.ago, then got sick,.fell behind with everything, blah,.blah, blah. Anyway, I am finding the manga is moving a.bit slow. Does it pick up? I know you are a huge fan Queen Diva, & I already trust your taste in manga/anime, so I will continue. But you better be there for me to discuss like we discussed,.lol.

message 44: by Miss Ryoko, Supreme Overlord ;) (new)

Miss Ryoko (missryoko) | 472 comments Mod
Haha yeah there are a couple of slow volumes (it always happens) Volumes 4-6 for me were the slowest when we were kind of learning the back story of what was going on while they were training. I gave volumes 7 and 8 4-stars, so that means I must have really liked them. I gave volume 9 3-stars so that means it was moving a little slower for me.

And yes! I am awaiting your discussion... I might not remember a lot because I read this series last summer and my life has been so hectic and crazy that I can hardly remember anything, but I will definitely discuss!!

I just got a bunch of volumes for Christmas! I'm so excited!!

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

I am more or less caught up on the series. And I can say that it will pick up again after volume 9. There are some interesting reveals and progressions in the story that I did not expect.

Chris wrote: "There are some interesting reveals and progressions in the story that I did not expect."

Indeed!! And there were a lot of things I was like "Well, how could this have happened if (insert scenario here)?" thinking I caught Isayama-sama messing up but then like a volume or two later, he'd have an answer for it!

My only hope is that with the popularity of the series, it won't mean that it'll go on and on and on and suddenly we'll be in volume 36, or worse, breaking the 40s.
