SOLVED. Science fiction, boy and girl try to uncover truth behind ghosts and father's research, father invented robot bees. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read this book years ago and as far as I can remember it's not a series. The book starts out with a scientist finding a flash drive in the future, farther future than the future the book takes place in and decodes its story. In the past, future relative to us but past relative to the scientist with a flash drive there is a boy and his friend who have the day off from school since they were far ahead of everyone else. The main character's father invented robot bees to replace the dead bees of the future. There's also a network, like the internet, inside every human's mind that they can access mentally and nobody knows when it got there or how it got there, it simply was there. *Slight spoilers* The main character later in a bar like building meets with a woman to "hack" his own memories. *Larger spoiler* He uses a geotag to find out that his memories were manipulated to make it look like his mother simply left him one day. *Absolutely huge spoiler* Aliens are supposedly using humans like a computer or storage and the main character's father wants to use a device to mess with the signal that the aliens send, the signal is basically to upgrade humanity. in order to cause all of humanity to downgrade random amounts. His idea is that when something breaks a repairman has to come to fix it, basically he wants the aliens to come to earth. The main character stops him by using his father's robot bees to destroy the machines, the robot bees act like bullets that can reshoot themselves according to the book, and then with the girl by his side he finishes writing his journal, the story on the flash drive, and then humanity gets upgraded. *Spoilers again* The ghosts in the book are the humans left behind during the upgrading process and the main character's mother became one of them when she volunteers to be downgraded to advance the cause.
