Anna (vegfic) Best Short Work category:

2. Be 150 pages or fewer in length (approximately – works close to this page count but substantially marketed/discussed as novellas may be considered in the appropriate novel length category)

Should that say novels?

edit: Or is it allowed to nominate something that's marketed as a novella but has over 160 pages in the fantasy/scifi categories?

For example The Black Tides of Heaven and The Red Threads of Fortune are marketed as novellas, but they have over 200 pages each.

Novellas for tor.com as they're marketed that way :)

We don't allow short story collections/anthologies but we do allow a single short work. It would still need to fit the short work eligibility rules (e.g. published in 2017 for the first time, sff theme, marketed as novella/short, fisrt, second or third in a series etc.) but it's fine if it's included in a short story collection/anthology, we just need the name of the individual story you're nominating.

Alistair | 54 comments What is the feeling on The Stone Sky..... sci-fi or fantasy?
I have seen/heard it referred to as both,
Personally, I'd call anything with magic fantasy.

I also would like a determination on this question.

Alistair | 54 comments As I like to keep our dredd(ed) judges on their toes (2000AD?) I would be interested in a "ruling" on eligibility of Ghosts of Tomorrow by Michael R Fletcher :)

Just to be clear, does that mean that they are also not eligible for the Debut category?

Hi Alistair! Based on Michael R. Fletcher's website, this is being marketed as science fiction. So, generally, where there is some question, we'll go with the publisher's description. In this case since Fletcher self-published, we'll go with his choice!

For our purposes, we will be categorizing The Stone Sky as fantasy.

Kelsey | 61 comments Do manga qualify in the graphic work category if they were published in English in 2017?

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes Kelsey, Manga published in 2017 in English would count for graphic. :D

Hi Alistair! Base..."

It's definitely SCI-FI I was more expecting it to be "ruled out" because originally produced some time ago and then after "work" reissued in 2017.
Don't think many have read it but thought I'd throw it in! :)

I am planning on nominating The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. in SF, but was hoping for an adjudication that that is the right category since there are witches/magic in the story.

I think SF fits best because a) time travel b) quantum explanation of magic c) realistic setting. But will wait to hear what you say.

I believe the consensus among voters and judges is that D.O.D.O. is SF.

(I called it fantasy in my nominations video, but I am the odd one out there!)

Kelsey | 61 comments I still have to film my nomination suggestions video, and so I have a couple questions about the eligibility of books that I really liked, but aren't actually going to make it onto my ballot because the competition is tough:

The Refrigerator Monologues: Novel? novella? It's right at that 150 page mark, and I don't remember it being overtly marketed either way. I noticed the Locus Recommended Reading list categorizes this as a collection, which I personally disagree with, since I saw it as a unified whole when I read it.

An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors: Debut or no? I remember this being marketed as a debut, though the author has a couple of previous self-published works listed on Goodreads.

Hi Kelsey, We've so far had Refrigerator Monologues in short (as it's a collection of interlinked shorts) from most people.
We've also said that it has to be the author's debut book. If they've published other books themselves but this one isn't their first ever, then it can't go into debut.
