Book with character named Amelie in middle school? (not the French comedy)

Trying to think of the name of a book I read in grade 6 (2007-2008) with a green cover. Main character was named Amelie or Emilie, had a friend who was slightly spunky and dyed her hair grey. I believe a school play and a boyfriend were central idea to the story. It is not the French comedy, "Amélie".

Don't know if it was a series or not.
I don't remember there being a specified time frame or location but likely modern day and in the US.
I read it in Canada.
