Hello all you beautiful group members! Check out the challenges section over the next few days as I'm finally getting around to getting some of the 2018 Challenges up. I have three of our yearly challenges up and some more I'm considering for the rest of the year.

If you have any fun challenge ideas, please share! Challenges is one of the things I love most about this group, so having ideas for fun, different challenges is something I'm super game for!!

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments I just thought of one after completing my first series of the year today. How about a manga series Count up (or whatever you'd call it.) Basically read a one shot book, then read a series with only 2 books in it and then a series with 3 books. You keep going until you can't get a series with the number of books you need next or you throw in the towel for other reasons. :)

Personally I would allow Omnibus books to be counted as either individual books or as a multiple based on how many volumes are in them but the book should specifically say which manga numbers are in them.

Meagan (MadSkyentist) | 4 comments Ooh, that's a great idea! Unfortunately, my book store tends to carry only the most popular series of Manga. Mostly just ones that have already been turned into anime. So I would need a bit of notice to order the right books online! Any ideas on what you want to start with first?

message 4: by Meagan (new)

Meagan (MadSkyentist) | 4 comments Also, this isn't really a challenge and it's something I already do: Manga Mondays! Every Monday you go to your local brick-and-mortar bookstore and buy a new manga, or new volume of a manga that you've never read before! It would be fun to see what everyone else gets though!

Manga Monday is the name of the Manga sale for Barnes and Noble's online sale when they choose 4 volumes and put them for sale up to 50% off(at least that is when they are not having buy 2 get 1 free sale like right now.) Since my local store is B&N I'll stick with visits on Saturday when I want 10% off. :) https://www.barnesandnoble.com/b/mang...

It would be readers choice but I would suggest Fairy Tail Zero which is a great one shot and tells how Fairy Tail was created. :)

Ian - I absolutely love that idea!!

Meagan - I love that idea too! What do you think - perhaps that would be more a discussion thread type thing?

Thanks for the input! Also, Meagan, I read all my manga through my library :) I'm not sure where you live or what your library system is like, but that is a good resource to check for getting manga to read :)

message 8: by Jingraves (new)

Jingraves | 33 comments You can go to rightstuf online as well and get some pretty good deal, that's were I get a majority of mine because I save so much doing bigger orders. Check them out.

Jingraves | 33 comments Ian so have you seen what they did with those. They made it into a quote unquote series, but there all one shots.

0 - Fairy Tail Zero
1 -Fairy Tail Twin Dragons of Saber Tooth
2 - Fairy Tail Rhodonite
3 - Fairy Tail Flash of Great Lightning

1 to 3 are considered Gaiden, but they go together.

And...
How do you feel about it coming to an end?

Are the Gaiden books a complete series at 3? I would consider them a 3 if they are because they are clearly marked on the covers even if the stories are about different Dragon Slayers. Fairy Tail Zero is still a 1 regardless of being a 0 book because you can't have a non existent one shot but then again it was only an example like Miyukichan In The Wonderland: Miyukichan En El País De Las Maravillas. :)

I'll message ya about the ending of Fairy Tail so this thread doesn't explode to much though. :)

Thank you for the tip Jingraves, I will definitely check them out!

How partial is everyone to the ABC Challenge? Do we love this challenge enough we'd like to do it yearly? I wasn't going to do it this year, but now I'm having doubts. Lol - share your thoughts :)

Would we be able to read the same series as previous years? Eventually we would all have to read The Qwaser of Stigmata if it has to be a new series every year and no one (probably) wants that. :)

Great question Ian! Now that Goodreads lets you add additional read dates, it doesn't matter :) You could certainly keep re-reading the series.

Truth be told, I was thinking about taking a break from it simply because some of the letters are tricky to find (I had to get creative a few years ago and just find a title that had a Q in it somewhere :-p ) - but if people really enjoy it, I'm happy to have it. Maybe it can be an every other year type of event?

As always, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Jingraves | 33 comments You may be able to do like a merger between this group and another group I'm in.

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

They do challenges too.

Thanks for your input Connie! Curious to know what you thought about my every other year suggestion?

Thanks for sharing Jingraves! We have a challenge very similar to that group - it's just the Manga Reading Challenge, but members are able to set their goal for the year

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Connie wrote: "I think it's a great idea! I can't wait for it!"

Can't wait for a A-Z challenge every other year or for the next one to come?

Either way we get new people every year so If you want to only do it every other year that is fine (there will probably be another group doing the challenge this year anyway) or if you decide to do it yearly after all then whoever wants to participate will anyway. Even someone that discovers the challenge in December can look through all of the manga they have read this year and try to complete it. :)

Cindy III | 24 comments What about doing a hiragana and katakana challenge? I don't think all 46 would have to be used to complete it (n and wo aren't usable at the beginning of a word). I am not even sure how some of the hiragana fit. Where would the g sound go? After k?

I'm mentioning it, but it would be hard to accomplish I think.

DJay (djdjay) | 4 comments If we're doing the ABC challenge. I got one for G. Goblin Slayer. Year one.

Oh neat. I have heard of the light novel but I didn't realize they released a manga at the end of last year. (Yen Press needs to update their page more often.)

Maybe a generic topic like when you can let others see your progress and you can keep track but for various members of the group who can offer suggestions for harder to find manga for challenges like DJay suggested (plus it can help people like me learn about new manga.) :)

Thanks all for the input!

I do like the idea of doing it every other year - that way people don't get burnt out and/or gives them more time to gather resources.

Ian, I believe (but admittedly I'd have to go look to refresh my memory) there might be an ABC Challenge discussion thread where people can leave their title suggestions. I'll take a look when I'm not at work (shhhhh *wink*) and see what it looks like. If it needs updating, I will go ahead and update it with a new post :)

Thanks all! You rock!!

Yeah GS:Y1 explains about what happened after the assault on his village and his transition to become the t-1000 of Goblin Slayers.
