Hi everybody

I'm not good at the planning thing. I'm in another group where when as soon as you finish one book you receive another challenge - so planning ahead is a bit difficult.

I will however keep in mind what we still need so if its okay with everybody I'll just post as we go along.

I just want to say we're an awesome team and I'm proud to be Team Hydrus

That's no problem at all Ricka :D I think our team has been so successful so far because we have a good mix of planners and pinch hitters - and you're probably our best pinch hitter xD

I'm really excited to be going into our last month as part of Team Hydrus too!

Hiraya (artsynanay) | 63 comments Woohoo! Finally finished Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. I sincerely hope it is not too late.

I will be carrying over my two books, The Path of Daggers and She Who Remembers for next month. Sorry for not being able to read the latter. I've been DYING to read it ever since I got my hands on a copy from a thrift store, but alas, my schedule did not permit it.

If there is anything you wish me to prioritize, I will gladly do so! I will be updating all my posts in a while.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Nice! And with Virna's last book we are 100% finished with March UNO - with more than 4 days still left to go. Great job everyone!

Make sure you have all of your March books on your UNO shelves (and especially the correct edition if you had a color cover). Jenny will be coming by in the next few days to check that everything is in order :D

Here is the countdown for April books to be finished.

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Attention Hydrus!

April mini-challenge information is UP! We need to read 74 books to finish this one, but it will also start a few days early on April 12th. The countdown for the challenge start date is here.

Remember books started before April 12th will NOT count for the mini-challenge. Please plan accordingly. Also we are still looking for the Yellow 7 color card, so keep that in mind too.

I'll have more information up in just a few minutes

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments April Mini

This mini challenge is all about reading different tasks related to unusual holidays in April!

This challenge is pretty cut and dry.
⭐ We will be given 70 tasks for 70 books.
⭐ For each task completed we will receive 10 points
⭐ If we complete all 70 tasks we will receive 30 bonus points

IF we manage to read all 70 then, and only then, there will be an additional bonus we can attempt. The bonus is to read books that hit two of the tasks already read for. We can read 4 books for 8 tasks. We can mix and match those as we please, but must use 8 different tasks (no doubles). Each bonus book will count for an additional 30 points.

We must finish the first 70 before the bonus though.

This is a lot of books to read in 19 days but I really, really think we can do it guys! GO TEAM HYDRUS!

Hiraya (artsynanay) | 63 comments Interesting. The book we're going to work on for our UNO cards can also count as points for the mini-challenge, right?

Anyway, sign me up for the last yellow. :)

message 277: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments I think those trees are close enough to ask for forgiveness later on. I'm just not sure about letters since they specify a number and that can sometimes be disputed.

I also asked about a color questions - pink enough?

This Pen for Hire (A Jaine Austen Mystery, #1) by Laura Levine - it looks pink to me, but tineye isn't giving it 50% pink.

Also, I just read this so I can't use it, but I did want to throw there that Good Morning, Midnight would work for "astronaunt" and "travel to another planet" if anyone is feeling like reading it. I thought it was pretty good

Hi everybody

It looks like a quiet a challenge!!! You guys are so good at all this planning stuff. Sorry to be a wet blanket but I don't want to commit to anything that I can't do so I'll be after the fact if that's okay with everybody. I'm sure I'll be able to cover some of them.

That's totally fine Ricka :D If you know some of the books you already plan on/want to read coming up I can take a look at where to place them. I like doing it (like a puzzle) and you and I generally read different types of books, so I don't mind spoiling them for myself to find task answers :D

Megan Here's what I've come up with so far. I tried to make sure that I only went for holidays that hadn't been claimed yet, if I accidentally overlapped with someone else though just let me know and I'll adjust to cover something different.

6. Book published on April 4th (April 4, 2017) American War by Omar El Akkad
**finished 4/30**

18. Estranged siblings reconnect (sisters live together after not seeing each other for 10 years) Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
**finished 4/23**

25. Character works as a teacher (Robert Langdon, Harvard Professor) Origin (Robert Langdon, #5) by Dan Brown
**finished 4/29**

38. Title starts with H (Harry Potter) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling
**finished 4/21**

56. Author's first or last name begins with P (Philip Roth) Nemesis by Philip Roth
**finished 4/14**

I'll see what's still needed towards the end of the challenge and add more to help cover them

That's fine Megan - if you have no objections I'm going to put Brain on Fire down for 58. Read a book where DNA can be found in the text. For Unbecoming I'm going to put it down for 3. You're all good Megan - this looks great! And congrats on finding the April 4th - that's a pretty hard one :D

Also just as a heads up to everyone I moved one of my books from the "main genre page of humor" to "character who is a photographer" (I figured that one would be harder to find again) so the humor one is now up for grabs if anyone wants it :D

I'm reading for 36. with pyjamas in the text - Sunset Ridge 17.22 % - Three weeks later Dave was unsure how he came to be standing in the sitting room at nine o’clock at night in his pyjamas and dressing gown.

& for 1. with “fun” in the text or title - The Goshawk - 3,61% - Gos concentrated his attention backward, without looking round, and dipped the tip of his tail in the extraordinary medium. It was fun.

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments I'm finishing up Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet and think we should count it as one of our bonus books (if we get that far). It works for #13 (character named Charlie) and #70 (a blunt character - both Charlie and Rayes are very blunt). I started after the timer went off and I don't think it works for any of the open spots.

Okay with that?

Caroline (paper_moonshine) | 822 comments Okay - I'll update for tasks 1, 24, 36, and 43 - excellent ladies :D

Alissa - thank you for the update :D

Jenny - I think the bonus books are going to be fairly easy since we only have to do a couple and some of the tasks are pretty easy to find both in one book. I think it would be better right now to focus on the hitting each one. I'm thinking this if it sounds good to you too:

Fourth Grave - character named Charlie
Magpie Murders - MC as a writer
A Tale for the Time Being - Poem in the text

Great! Also I'm really glad we had this conversation so early in the challenge. If anyone is reading a book that won't work for open tasks, but will work for others please tell us. I'm sure we can get stuff shifted around, especially as we actually read our books and have more information, and a book marked for an easier task might actually work for a much harder one - like what happened above :D

On that note, if anyone ends up reading a book with a post 19th century, traditional western version of a court room let me know and I'll move my book to task 2.

message 299: by Jammin Jenny (new)

Jammin Jenny (jamminjenny) | 871 comments Following along that same train of thought, it might be wise to list other open tasks your book could work for when you post a book as complete. That way you'll be looking at the list of tasks when your book is fresh in your mind just in case we need to move things around later.

I just did this for the book I used for Task #62. It also worked for currently open tasks 2, 5, 17 and 21 so I listed them as possible alternates.
