Erika (smick) why wish this upon yourself? be glad you don't have to live these lives if you were fortunate enough to not have to. i spy the worst kind of poseur. worse yet are those who capitalize on it financially. this is not tuff.

Amanda (randymandy) Yeah, it's pretty sickening. I've actually heard about people who have deliberately contracted HIV because they think people will dote sympathy upon them. Is that really better than the alternaive of simply being ignored?

Xio (xioj) Oooooh, I always get in trouble for commenting on these issues so other than this I'll sit on my hands....oh wait, that only inspires me more.

(thinking)

message 4: by Tesse (new)

Tesse (hooksinmyhead) Is this really a problem?

How, exactly, do people "want" to be poor, abused or addicted?

Please do not view this as an attack. I just want you to clarify your point, then I'll attack if I think it's a load of shit.

I'll step in on this one, let's play with our friend the biography. Using http://www.latimes.com/news/printedit...
as an example, it's pretty obvious that WOW there is a desire to feel that kind of tribulation on a visceral level that translates to big publishin' $$$. What's it born of? I forget who was the wag who coined 'The Slums may be the birthplace of crime & desperation, but it is the suburbs that are the breeding grounds of madness & delirium'. But it doesn't sound like he/she got it too far off the mark.

shellyindallas that's a good quote.
a couple examples that come to my mind are a woman who lied about being in one of the WTC towers on 9/11 and took money from people who felt for her, and--and this is really lame and low--a woman that told her daughter to lie about her dad dying in Iraq so she could win some Hannah Montana tickets.

Amanda (randymandy) "How, exactly, do people "want" to be poor, abused or addicted?"

The same way teenagers WANT to have babies. The same way 13 year olds WANT to lose their virginity, have sex in school bathrooms, and give blow jobs in the stairwell. The same way grown adults will stay in abusive relationships/jobs/etc. People WANT attention and we NEED love, so we desperate Americans are willing to put up with almost anything to get it, even if it's just for a fleeting moment.

Wanting to be poor, abused, and addicted is just slightly more extreme. I think it's mostly young (maybe naive is a better word) people and people with low self-esteem that are the ones doing such extreme things.

Oh yeah, and what Steve said about money. People love their money.

Amanda (randymandy) Hannah Montana? Seriously? That's fucked up.
