I'm almost finished The Sisters Brothers. Can't say it's really been my cuppa. It's not even the occasional grue and "grittiness" that bothers me, because it's fitting for the characters and the time period. But the writing is so plodding, I'm just kinda bored, really...

Not sure what I'm onto next. Gotta find something on my e-reader to make it home tonight, since I have so little of Sisters Brothers left, it won't hold me over for the whole train ride.

I have made a tactical error.

I'm reading three books that all are taking a lot of energy for me to read. I'm trying really hard to get into Sea of Rust but it's fighting me. Wheel of Time is still on hold and it feels like if I'm going to slog through something, it should be one I can finish more quickly.

So I started listening to An Ember in the Ashes which is a book I selected for one of my challenges, but it's waaaayyyy more grimdark than I anticipated and I just don't know that I'm in that mood.

Gonna keep plodding along. If Sea of Rust doesn't produce the plot point I was promised imminently, I might just drop it so I can start the Inclusive Bingo Buddy Read Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach.

I had never heard of this book, but it is now on my TBR list. The description of the book looks like exactly the kind of thing I like. Magic and advanced technology in the same world is a big draw for me. I just have to find time to read it.

I've just started The Magpie Lord and Boy's Life and they are both great. By tomorrow I'll dive into An Ember in the Ashes as a reread with a buddy. I loved this book at first read but then I don't mind dark and grim (and this was a little bit of both).

I quite liked An Ember in the Ashes although it is a bit grim and dark. Book 2 in the series is much the same. Book 3 is a constant procession of battles and murders with little character or story development. If she makes book 4 the last then I will read it just to tie up loose ends. If it isn't then I will give up quietly.

Good to know about later books! I actually think it's an interesting set up and the writing is fine so far. I just wasn't expecting it to be so brutal from the jump. Idk, that content just feels like "mid book" to me, somehow ;-)

Now that my expectations have altered, I'll keep trucking--I just wasn't in the mood today.

Just finished "To honor you call us" by H. Paul Honsinger. 100% manstuff... and I do mean 100%. someone mentioned it was "Master and Commander" in space with superlightspeed ships. The writer can certainly turn a phrase.

just Finished "City of Jade" an excellent Urban Fantasy with Magic Jade and Gangsters. The book finishes many of it story line but you know there is books two somewhere. I found it vastly superior to the Dresden stuff I've read so far. To be fair Dresden made me laugh once and Jade City did not.

So after finishing All the Birds in the Sky the other day, I tagged Charlie Jane Anders in a tweet talking about how much I loved her book, and then got involved in a couple of other chats with folks on Twitter about what I would want to read as my palate cleanser between The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky. Because those Broken Earth Trilogy books are *intense.*

Anyway, Charlie herself joined in that conversation and said that The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet would be a great palate cleanser, so I took that as a sign, since her book had been a perfect choice for me, and that’s what I just started to read. And I’m definitely enjoying it.

I loved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, and I really liked the follow-up, A Closed and Common Orbit (not exactly a sequel, focuses on characters who were on the periphery in the first one). The third one, Record of a Spaceborn Few, comes out soon, and I'm very excited. I think there's going to be a buddy read?

Dawn, I think you're right. It did feel like Firefly sometimes. However, I thought Murderbot was closer to Marvin from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I thought that Artificial Condition was a step down from the first book. It very much felt like a middle book. I still plan to finish the series, but I am less enthusiastic than I was (I bought Artificial Condition on release day).

I can't say that I am a big fan of Hamill's acting, but it was certainly better than Carrie Fisher's at the time.

There is a documentary on Netflix, about Myths and Monsters and the first one is about Koschei the Deathless. It was very interesting. Not exactly a complete rendition of the story I am sure but still.
