Margo | 11628 comments I have just finished Snowflower and the Secret Fan. I have very mixed feelings about it. The
way women were treated in 19th century China does not make for pleasant reading.

I'm not sure what to start next as wednesday I start a buddy read. Time to dig out some shorties I think 😉

@Rusalka and Pragya: First, let me say that I had just put down a pretty intense mystery thriller to pick up the Cocaine Blues. My mind was still there in London with Frieda Klein, so when I picked up Phryne Fisher, my first thought was - "what is this, Nancy Drew, Australian style?' I thought she was older... I was not expecting her to be a rich, young girl - off to Australia on her own - to play detective. And then, it was all of the stuff about her clothes. I just had to laugh. That is why I said I was shocked. I'm done with it now. I really enjoyed the story. It was light and fun and I will read more...

I've finished Tuesday's Gone for my ZZ challenge. I have already downloaded book three (Waiting for Wednesday: A Frieda Klein Mystery. (Strange, the way they have the titles for this series listed. Right cover, wrong format in two cases.) I also finished the book of Robert Heinlein short stories.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Cherie, that sounds interesting. I will definitely give it a read. Australian style Nancy drew! I am intrigued.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished Sweep in Peace last night, and will start Bellevue Square for my real life book club meeting at the end of the month.

If you'll take my advise - watch the film, it's easier to follow! Orwell has such amazing ideas but IMO he wasn't much of a writer :-/

message 357: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I tried to listen to Anthem but gave up very quickly. It was too bleak for me.

I'm now listening to Stillhouse Lake. Not so deep (see what I did there??) but much more to my liking.

I totally understand your previous read impacting on your current one though. That happens to me a bit. I'm glad you enjoyed it though!

I liked that Phryne liked herself and was a nice person. And she was smart.

24 or 25 is about what I figured for her Rusalka. The clothes thing was funny. Joan - made a comment about her clothes in one of my status updates. She said she was not a clothes fashionista, but she coveted Phryne's clothes.

From page 8: "Still wrapped in her robe, she nibbled a little thin toast and contemplated her wardrobe, which was spread out like a picnic over all available surfaces."
"The weather reports promised clear, mild conditions, and Phryne briefly considered a Chanel knitted silk suit, in beige, and a rather daring coat and skirt in bright red wool but finally selected a fetching sailor suit in dark blue with white piping and a pique collar. The waist dropped below her hips leaving five inches of pleated skirt, which even the parochial taste of Melbourne could not find offensive."
"She dressed quickly and soon stood up in cami-knickers and silk stockings which were gartered above the knee, and dark-blue leather shoes with a Louis heel."

The writing is a little old fashioned - like old cowboy novels and Nancy Drew stories, but with an Australian slant and lingo. Just a little hard on the senses after coming off of a Frieda Klein story.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I'm going to bail on Bellevue Square. It's not doing it for me. Tonight, I'll get a start on the group read The Essex Serpent.

message 368: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I bailed on The Cruel Prince yesterday. A lot of reviews were making it sound like it was different from most of the YA novels out there but it felt exactly the same to me. I probably will pick it up again when I'm in the mood for a quick read that I don't have to think hard about but for now, it's back on the TBR pile.

message 369: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I finished Unwind for the zodiac challenge and now I'm moving on to A Wizard of Earthsea for the buddy read.

message 370: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I read 50 pages of The Leavers and I am abandoning it. My GR friends who read it liked it, but I can't get into it. It took me 4 days to read those pages. I annoyed me how one the author goals seems to be to fight preconceptions abut Chinese people and especially Chinese immigrants in the US (which is a good thing and the reason I picked the book), but at the same time the American couple that adopts the Chinese boy who lost his mother is so, so, SO stereotyped...

I just will wait until tomorrow and start His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae for March challenge. I won't have time to read today anyway.

message 371: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I have 2 hours left in Stillhouse Lake and then I will start A Wizard of Earthsea.

The thriller i am reading is a mixed bag. I can't really empathise with the MC which I think is really important for a thriller. The situation is very interesting tho. It will probably be a 3.5 stars

message 372: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I am hoping to finish The Silent Corner today, then maybe pick up The Eyes of the Dragon. I'm not sure. Our buddy read thread seems to be struggling with a start date.

I'm also finally back to reading Other People's Houses and hope to finish in a couple of days.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Welcome to the group Gabrielle!

We all love to see which books others are reading and add them to our ever growing piles of books to read, so if you're using a computer or laptop, it would be great if you could link to the book directly so that all we need to do is click on it ;-) You can do this by clicking the 'add book/author' button right above the text box. It will look like this: The Moon and More. This doesn't work in the app though.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished A Wizard of Earthsea for our buddy read and have started Anne of Green Gables for the monthly challenge. I'm already about half way through it.

message 391: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I'm still reliving my childhood withA Wizard of Earthsea.

I started The Essex Serpent on saturday but I couldn't get into it. The way the story was told didn't draw me in at all so I put it down to retry at another time.

My copy of The Good People arrived from the library so a delved into that and what a different experience! Kent is a wonderful writer and I am immersed 😊

message 392: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I started Rot & Ruin for the monthly challenge. I'm still reading A Wizard of Earthsea but just needed a break from it. I have about an hour's reading left of it which I'll do tomorrow.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I finished Anne of Green Gables for the monthly challenge. Tomorrow, I will start The Element of Fire for the zodiac challenge.

message 394: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments I finished The Eyes of the Dragon. I thought it was good. I planned to use it for the zodiac challenge, but I'm not sure which task. It fits for Virgo, Stone: Amethyst (the main character is a king, queen, prince, or princess) or Capricorn, Actor: Sissy Spacek (she was in Carrie by Stephen King). Capricorn gets me one step closer to a badge, but may also be the easier task to fill later...decisions, decisions. lol

I'm planning to start The Whispering Room later today (also for the zodiac challenge).

I am still reading Hollow City and hoping to finish up Other People's Houses soon.
