Peggy wrote: "The fruit machine picked Major Pettigrew's Last Stand for me to read for the zodiac challenge."I hadn't thought about it, but I may have to put the fruit machine to work for some of my zodiac challenge reads too. Good idea!
I hardly ever use it, usually there's one book that appeals to me the most at one specific moment, but not this time.
Just finished Old Man's War. Very impressed with John Scalzi. Intelligently written space opera with his trademark dash of metaphysics.
Glad you are enjoying it Mariab. Yeah I looked up quite a few words too.Pleased you are continuing to enjoy Scalzi Margo.
I finished Artemis and loved it. The POV and how the story was told worked better for me than The Martian (I'm not keen on diary formats). I think thus helped me to not compare the two books in story quality. I gave it a 5 star rating. First book for the zodiac challenge in the bag. Now moving on to Kin which is also for the challenge plus it's for a netgalley review. Also for review, I am reading a sample of The Tangled Lands - gutted it's only a sample.

I finished Affinity for January challenge, my first Sarah Waters. I will probably read more by her at some point.I have only 3 hours left in People of the Book, and I started Flowers for Algernon (black and white covers in the ZZ challenge).
Mikayla wrote: "Reading Six of Crows. So far I find it very interesting"I loved this book. I want to reread it at some point and read the sequel. I'm waiting for the third book (I think its a trilogy) to come out so I can read them all back-to-back.
I'm just about to pick up Artemis by Andy Weir. I didn't read The Martian although it is on my TBR but I did see the movie and really enjoyed it.
I see you gave Artemis 5*s Sarah - fingers crossed I love it as much as you did!

I think it's good this is the first Weir book for you as it will stop you comparing. I hope you enjoy it. It is a quick, fun read.
Margo wrote: "Just started Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for ZZ challenge, Johnny Depp."Enjoy the ride!
I am having a bad reading day. Two books for the zz challenges started and abandoned!!The Durrells of Corfu was a really dry biography of an author who was full of life and zeal. I couldn't take it 😕
My next attempt was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I have been coming across references to this classic for years and always thought I should try it someday. Well, today was the day! I picked it up from the library, brought it home, listened to 4 chapters of drug induced garbage and gave up 😱
I don't think I have experienced a double whammy before. Here's hoping my next zz pick will be better - The Fire Child. It's a genre I am far more comfortable with at least!
I wondered how you'd do with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Margo. I read it years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. But, I'm not sure it would appeal to me now.
I too wondered how you would get on with fear and loathing. I too gave up on the audiobook although i think i made it a bit further than you. I actually like the beginning the most but then it makes less sense as things go on. I hoped it would bring clarity to the film for me but it didn't happen.
Haha, I laughed out loud when I read your description of Fear and Loathing. Hope your next one is better!
Right now, I'm reading 3 books (yeah I know!)Every Heart a Doorway
A Wrinkle in Time Movie Tie-In Edition
Travelers

Yup, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a long shot, but at least I know what it's like now!! Its not really aimed for my demographic lol
My new book, also from the library, is a mystery set in i cornish mining village, The Fire Child. Much more my cup of tea 😄
I finished my first book for the Zodiac challenge, Wideacre by Philippa Gregory. I am not really a fan of Gregory but this was quite enjoyable in a messed up sort of way. I gave it 3 stars.
I just finished my kindle book The Two Faces of January and I wanted to note that 80% takes place in greece! I will start my next kindle tomorrow, Sealskin, set in scotland.
Lisa wrote: "I finished my first book for the Zodiac challenge, Wideacre by Philippa Gregory. I am not really a fan of Gregory but this was quite enjoyable in a messed up sort of way..."Glad you liked it Lisa. I must do a reread soon and see it I still enjoy it as much as I remember ;-)
I finished Cemetery Dance in the wee hours of the morning. I couldn't put it down until it was finished.Next up is another zodiac read - Trouble in Mudbug. I need something light and silly, and this looks like it will fit.
I finished The Iron King for the Zodiac challenge. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...I am now starting another Zodiac challenge book, The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock. This has been compared, amongst others, to The Miniaturist and Golden Hill which are both books I loved.
Can’t wait to see what you think of Trouble in Mudbug, Janice. I have it as a possibility for a zodiac task as well.
I'm on the fence about The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock, so will wait until I hear how you make out with it Lisa.I've been reading a lot of chunksters, and heavy stories lately. I had Mystery up next, but it's 750 pages. I couldn't do it. In fact, nothing on my "up next" list appealed to me, so I reverted to my zodiac challenge. Trouble in Mudbug jumped right out at me. I've been enjoying her Miss Fortune series, and this looks fun as well.
Margo wrote: "Oh, Trouble in Mudbug is free on kindle! Great :-))"That's why I picked it up. I would have opted to read the next one in the Miss Fortune series, except I don't have it, so I went with opportunity. :) Nothing like starting another series.
I was slightly over half way through The Fire Child when my library play- a-way died. My hubby assissted in resuscitation attempts but sadly there was no recovery :-(It was an atmospheric story reminiscent of Rebecca. While I was enjoying it I don't think I am curious enough to buy the book to find out who done it - if anyone has read it I would love a spoiler :-/

I will let you know how I get on, Janice.
I am starting The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. and hoping my luck will change.I managed to order another library copy of The Fire Child so all hope is not lost ;-)
Sarah wrote: "Curious about the DODO book."It's a strange one so far! The closest parallel I can make 2 hours in is to Warehouse 13. It is the same kind of blend of fantasy with sci-fi. It is making me smile :-)
I've decided to quit reading Thornwood House. It's not catching my interest and drawing me in. That was for my zodiac challenge so I'll have to find another Australian book. In the meantime, I'll start Whistling Past the Graveyard for the zodiac set in July book.
Haruki Murakami's fans, what is a good book of his to start? I am inclined between The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and 1Q84, but maybe non of these?
My first was Norwegian Wood, and it didn't convince me to try this author again. Most likely that's just me though, not the book.
Peggy wrote: "My first was Norwegian Wood, and it didn't convince me to try this author again. Most likely that's just me though, not the book."I saw yesterday that you didn't enjoy it. :(
Sandra wrote: "Haruki Murakami's fans, what is a good book of his to start? My favourite though is Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. I think it represents his writing style and what his books are generally like.

i listened to book 1 of IQ84. i wasn't impressed enough to continue the story. that man has a boobie complex - breasts all over the place ;-p
I finished Kin which for review plus my zodiac challenge. Now I'm reading Origin. Probably just because. It is a library book that I'd hoped would arrive earlier in the month for the monthly theme. Not sure it will fit my zodiac challenge either.
Mikayla wrote: "Anyone else reading anything by VC Andrews?"i loved Flowers in the Attic series when it came out. nothing recent though
